« Bessette, Y A-Tu Shaké L'Systeme? » - L'Orallté Chez Gérard Bessette, G. Aileen Clark
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The purpose of this article is to study the use of oral markers in five excerpts from works by Gérard Bessette. The synchronic analysis looks at the author's use of vernacular in the narrative discourse. The diachronic analysis shows how and why the use of spoken French in the narrative discourse has changed since the publication of the novel La bagarre (1958).

The fertile territory of exile, inhabited and explored by displaced writers, has yielded myriad personal narratives. In this article, I discuss the strategy that Andrée Chedid chooses to broach in Le jardin perdu. Instead of relating a personal account of her own uprooting, she recreates the archetypal story of exile, that of Adam and Eve banished from paradise. By imagining what would have been their fears and hopes as they faced the unknown, she evokes the typical emotions of all exiles. By removing the story of displacement from the temporal and personal spheres, she brings it into the realm …

Passion Simple And Madame, C'Est A Vous Que J'Ecris: "That's My Desire", Elizabeth Richardson Viti
Passion Simple And Madame, C'Est A Vous Que J'Ecris: "That's My Desire", Elizabeth Richardson Viti

No two texts better exemplify the contemporary "he said, she said" phenomenon than Annie Ernaux's Passion simple (Simple Passion) and Alain Gerard's Madame, c'est a vous que j'eeris (Madam, It Is To You That I Am Writing). Ernaux's book, published in 1991, recounts the author's heretofore hidden affair with a foreign businessman living temporarily in France. Dissatisfied with Ernaux's account, Gerard assumes the lover's identity and chronicles events from his perspective, making Madame, e'est a vous que j' ecris, published four years later, an explicit response to Passion simple. The result is a rare …

Throughout his career, Djibril Diop Mambety infrequently associated with organizations set up by African film makers. He lived a life of dreams and invariably attempted to turn his dreams into film : the dream of a city (Dakar) at the crossroads of the history of a country (Contras'City, 1968), the dream of freedom (Badou Boy, 1970), the dream of belonging to a country free from the determinations of hegemonic discourses (Touki Bouki, 1973). In Hyenas (1992), Djibril Diop Mambety puts globalization on trial.

Une Poétique De L'Entre-Deux: Figures De L'Intermédiaire Dans L'Écriture D'Assia Djebar, Miléna Horvàth
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The goal of the present study is to observe the narrator's intercultural situation in certain novels of Assia Djebar written since 1980 : L 'amour, la fantasia (1985), Loin de Medine (1991) et Vaste est la prison (1995). In those texts, Djebar's fiction intertextuality reveals the in-between situation of the female narrator. lntertextual methods, what we call « in-between writing », help the transition between the female voice, Islamic writing, texts on colonization and image taken by a camera.

Gender issues in African literature and cinema have always raised challenging questions. It seems that the real or supposed oppression of women is often Justified in biological rather than in social terms, which, in turn obfuscates the real issues. This essay addresses the problem of film reecritures, from a comparative perspective. In so doing we pay special attention to the status of the feminine. Our aim is to reconsider current trends and ideological changes in the transfer from literary to filmic text.

Film and literature are interrelated in the works of Assia Djebar. An analysis of La Zerda et les chants de l'oubli reveals among other techniques, that the "image- son" can also be found in the literary production of this author whose concern for autobiography and languages is essential.

Cameroonian cinema is a product of a system that France and the local colonialists forged to maintain the imperial cultural hold. In order to cover its repressive nature, the local regime had to build up a cinematographic discourse that would portray its repressive nature and silence a rebellious population.

Now is an opportune time to look at the expanse of research that has emerged since 1980 in the field of African film criticism, to trace its parameters, highlight its strengths and identify its current shifts. In examining its present trends, we shall underscore themes and promising features in current African films. Our focus ·will be on French West African films and filmmakers; we will emphasize theoretical and esthetic writings in the field rather than popular media resources. It is a modest contribution to the field of African film studies, one we hope will foster further research into the full …
