Prefacing The Heroine's Text, her study of the French and English novel 1722-1782, with an explanation of its binary structure, Nancy Miller explains that in the first section, "The Euphoric Text," the inscription of female destiny is a positive one, ending with the heroine's integration into society; in the second section, "The Dysphoric Text," this inscription is negative, culminating in the heroine's premature death. An unexpected and largely unrecognized strength of the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University lies in French literary manuscripts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Authors' letters, autograph manuscripts and typescripts, and revisions in proof, as well as publishers' records, offer essential biographical, textual, and bibliographic documentation. Even though French literature has not been a primary collecting area, Syracuse University has had the good fortune to acquire individual items and collections of variety and depth. The summary that follows is offered as both an introduction to these collections and an invitation to scholarship.

This article describes "Une Amazone," a work by Alexandre Dumas that now resides in Syracuse University Special Collections. It is known alternatively by the title "Herminie." It is a Romantic tragedy that takes place surrounding the events of a masquerade ball. The author also comments on the foreward and notes that Dumas provided with the manuscript, giving valuable insights into Dumas' character development and creative process.

Many critics have discovered striking similarities between Samuel Johnson's Rasselas and Voltaire's Candide. Yet, most have failed to describe the links that exist between the works which indicate that similar forces may have spurred the authors to write so similar tales, one quickly following the other into publication.

Source studies of the two tales indicate that very little, if any, evidence is available to prove that the works were inspired by the same written sources that Johnson and Voltaire may have relied upon. While source studies of the tales do not reveal any shocking information, they do inform the …

France's most prominent philosopher of the second half of the seventeenth century is reputed to be no friend of rhetoric. Bernard Tocanne declares, "C'est chez Malebranche que se mettent en place tous les arguments mis en oeuvre par les adversaires de la rhétorique à la fin du siècle," and Peter France calls him "a philosopher who had no love for rhetoric." The basis of such judgments is the Oratorian's attacks in the Recherche de la vérité (1674) against the use of the imagination and passions in the eloquence of Tertullian, Seneca, and Montaigne. Mme. Marguerite Yourcenar, distinguished French writer and the first woman to be elected to the Academie Francaise in its 346-year history, has generously presented seventeen of her books to the Syracuse University Libraries. Some are early editions of special value, and one, Nouvelles orientales (Gallimard, 1938), is extensively corrected in her own hand. All the books contain a presentation inscription.

Near the beginning and end of his Lettres philosophiques (1734), his first major text promoting the principles of enlightenment, Voltaire gave examples of two very different kinds of eloquence. In the third letter on the Quakers, he pictured George Fox converting his jailers with his inspired preaching. In the last letter, he praised the eloquence of Pascal before he attempted a refutation of the Pensées, calling Pascal’s projected apology for Christianity “un livre plein de paralogismes éloquents et de faussetés admirablement déduites.” Each is representative of a brand of eloquence Voltaire found objectionable. A method has been used which reconciles two trends in current critical thought, namely structuralism and intuitive interpretation. The role and function of the narrators as well as the language and its equation with reality are stressed.

In the Histoire de Jenni (1775), his last major conte, Voltaire returns to a pattern similar in many ways to the one he had used in his first important tale, Micromégas. In both, as Vivienne Mylne has pointed out, two discussion scenes—the first near the beginning of the tale and a second more substantial one—are set in a narrative frame involving a voyage. Critics have generally attributed this return to a structure relying heavily on debate to convey his message to Voltaire’s increasing use of the philosophical dialogue in his later years. Carroll gives, in Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass, the principles underlying a carefully-built structure. In Lewis Carroll's nonsense world, the creatures break the determinism of meaning and significance.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the portrayal of the working-class by Emile Zola in his Rougon-Macquart and to present the working-class as Zola saw it. For this study, all twenty novels of Les Rougon-Macquart were examined, although they have not all been dealt with in detail here because many of them do not focus on the working-class.

The purpose of this thesis is to attempt to group under certain classifications the various types of violence that appear in Zola’s Rougon-Macquart series. For this study all twenty novels of Les Rougon-Macquart, publsihed between 1870-1893, were examined. Violence was not peculiar to any one segment of Second Empire society. It occurred within all classes: the workers, the bourgeoisie, the fishermen, the peasants, and the aristocracy. No study of the Second Empire would be complete without including this aspect of its society.

On appelle Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux "peintre de l'amour naissant, "observateur nuancé du coeur humain," "délicieux poète. De telles épithètes décrivent bien cet écrivain de la premiere moitié du dix-huitième siècle, auteur d'une trentaine de pièces et de plusieurs romans, récits et essais. Les critiques signalent toujours l'ambiance délicate et raffinée--même watteauesque--de ses oeuvres: mais, peu a peu, on commence a trouver aussi un coté sérieux et humanitaire chez Marivaux qui vaut l'attention du lecteur.
