Aucassin et Nicolette has stimulated much dialogue among scholars. Literary genres clearly express perceptions that are representative of an historical period and culture, and Aucassin et Nicolette's tendency to synthesize literary genres, namely poetry and prose, raises many points relative to the social sphere in which it came into existence. To best illuminate these characteristics in Aucassin et Nicolette, an eclectic approach to the text is in order.

Current trends in North African francophone literature include a movement towards the exploration of alienation and exile, most often in the form of novels written about Maghrebian immigrants in Europe. Yet this alienation exists within the North African context as well, and it is possible to feel alienated and exiled, as well as marginalized, within one's homeland. This question is explored by Moroccan francophone author Abdelhak Serhane in his novel, Le Soleil des obscurs, which is the focus of this study.

The 'Memoires de Celeste Mogador' is a Bildungsroman narrating the life a a prostitute and an actress. Censorship may have been the reason the book was not better known in its own time, and maybe even today. She eventually marries a count with whom she has an affair and follows him when he becomes French consul to Australia. The books recounts the life of an exceptional 19th century heroine, who has the strength to succeed despite a society which limits female roles and has ideas about proper marriages.

[Premier paragraphe] Pour l'excentrique "décadent" du XIX siècle, le mariage de la modernité avec la technique aboutissait à une crise de névrose et de caprice emblématique de la retraite (Des Esseintes à Fontenay-les-Roses dans Á rebours de Huysmans) ou, comme c'était le cas d'Anatole Baju, le fondateur de la revue Le Décadent, à l'avant-garde de son temps, Phileas Fogg et le capitaine Nemo sont plutôt représantatifs d'une synergie des notions d'innocence et de fantaisie de l'excentricité anglaise avec les inventions et les appropriations de territoire de la France au XIXe siècle.

In chapter nine of Seminar XVII, Lacan writes that the position of the analyst cannot be separated from Jewish history (158). More particularly, the invention of analytic discourse is part and parcel of a Hebraic tradition--represented by the Book of Hosea--in which one's god underscores the fact that even if everyone is speaking (let's say about sexual knowledge) this does not mean everyone is saying something. Son style insolent, son langage corrosif et volontairement Prosaïque confirme et signe I 'évolution dans le monde occidental des valeurs, des désirs et aspirations de 1'homme, et plus crucialement de la femme des années 90.
