Immediate Early Gene Expression In Medial Prefrontal Cortex And Hippocampus As A Function Of Aging, Megha Sehgal 2013 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Immediate Early Gene Expression In Medial Prefrontal Cortex And Hippocampus As A Function Of Aging, Megha Sehgal

Theses and Dissertations

Normal aging is accompanied by cognitive decline that differs from other aging-related pathological states like Alzheimer's disease. With an increasing proportion of the world population falling in an age group of 65 years and above, a preventive gerontological approach would improve the quality of life in the elderly. Especially important in this regard is the early detection of cognitive decline, so that appropriate measures can be taken to prevent development of cognitive deficits. Impairment in cognitive flexibility, the ability to modify a previously learnt behavior, is one such measure of impairment across species in aged animals. Previous work from our …

The U.S. Healthcare System: The Political And Personal Perspective, Sofia Gabirelle Seckler

Honors Capstone Projects - All

A large proportion of American adults lack health insurance, due to job loss and a wide variety of other issues. With the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and the Supreme Court decision affirming its constitutional legality, the availability of healthcare is set to increase in the near future. This honors thesis addresses the fit, or lack of fit, between the ACA provisions and the needs of the currently uninsured. My study involved ten interviews with patients at a free clinic for the uninsured in Syracuse, NY, and an interview with the Commissioner of Health from Onondaga County. For …

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Context: Gastrointestinal (GI) distress is common during ultrarunning.

Purpose: To determine if race diet is related to GI distress in a 161-km ultramarathon.

Methods: Fifteen (10 male, 5 female) consenting runners in the Javelina Jundred (6.5 loops on a desert trail) participated. Body mass was measured immediately pre-race and after each loop. Runners reported if they had nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and/or diarrhea after each loop. Subjects were interviewed after each loop to record food, fluid, and electrolyte consumption. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential risk factors and analyze trends that are associated with nosocomial infection using an inferential statistical methodology that would allow for the identification and future tracking of the aforementioned trends. The raw data on which statistical analyses were performed was collected and aggregated by the National Healthcare Safety Network for the year 2011 (5)

The results of the statistical analyses revealed that many factors should be taken into account when considering the causes of nosocomial infection, in paticular, that the amount of aggregated hours a certain type of ward (burn, medical, surgical, …

Vitamin D Supplementation Practices During Pregnancy And Infancy Among A Sample Of Muslim Women In Ireland And Saudi Arabia, Imann Khadrawi 2013 Technological University Dublin

Vitamin D Supplementation Practices During Pregnancy And Infancy Among A Sample Of Muslim Women In Ireland And Saudi Arabia, Imann Khadrawi

Masters

Vitamin D is a steroid hormone, a group of fat-soluble pro-hormones, which encourages the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous. The requirement for the nutrient is high at particular stages of the lifecycle especially during pregnancy and infancy. Severe vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy may increase the risk of developing preeclampsia and gestational diabetes in pregnancy and rickets in the child. While vitamin D supplementation has been a policy recommendation in Ireland since 2007, at the time of this study, it was not a policy recommendation in Saudi Arabia. The present quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted to determine the …

Drugs, Devices, And Desires: A Problem-Based Learning Course In The History Of Medicine, Sarah Levitt, Anne McKeage, P. K. Rangachari 2013 Oxford University, UK

Drugs, Devices, And Desires: A Problem-Based Learning Course In The History Of Medicine, Sarah Levitt, Anne Mckeage, P. K. Rangachari

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is well suited for courses in the history of medicine, where multiple perspectives exist and information has to be gleaned from different sources. A student, an archivist, and a teacher offer three perspectives about a senior level course where students explored the antecedents and consequences of medical technology. Two active learning strategies were used: (a) PBL to explore the historical basis of procedures used to diagnose, prevent and treat a single disease, tuberculosis, and (b) a concurrent inquiry-based component that permitted individual exploration of other medical technologies and demonstration of learning through diverse options (book reviews, conversations, …

Church-Based Health Care Initiatives In East Baltimore, Maryland, Valerie Warner-Collins

2010-2016 Archived Posters

A qualitative case study that investigated the perceptions of clergy regarding their roles, and those of the church, in health care advocacy. Questions emanating from the research literature were piloted to 4 expert jurors before distribution to 17 main participants. The results indicated that barriers to health care access was predicated on clerical perceptions of the role of the church, severed relationships between collaborators, and several faulty and systemic factors of prior partnerships.

Commentary: Critical Analysis Of Chiropractic At The Crossroads Or Are We Just Going Around In Circles., Dennis M. Richards

Dennis M Richards

This commentary presents critical analysis of a paper published by Dr John Reggars, and based, as he admitted, on his perceptions and opinions. Many of those are wrong. Others raise important questions. Sourced from a lecture presented by him at the 2010 annual conference of the Chiropractic and Osteopathic College of Australia (‘COCA’), this polemic is best understood in its historical and political contexts. COCA’s objects include political activity and Reggars is its vice president, which he failed to declare.

Those Who Get Left Behind, Maggie Pfutner 2013 St. John Fisher University

Those Who Get Left Behind, Maggie Pfutner

3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing

Overview: For most people, losing a friend or loved one is the most difficult thing that they will have to deal with in their life. When that person is an adolescent who may not have personally dealt with death before and especially a death from suicide, the process of grieving can become even more difficult and complicated. In 2009, 4,630 young adults ages 10-24 died by suicide (“Youth Suicidal Behavior”). For each of these deaths a conservative estimate is that “as many as 6 to 10 survivors (persons close to the suicide victim) remain to cope with the loss” (Mitchell …
