Transcriptional And Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Nrf2 In The Heart By The Deubiquitinase Cyld, Bryan J. Mathis 2016 University of South Carolina

Transcriptional And Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Nrf2 In The Heart By The Deubiquitinase Cyld, Bryan J. Mathis

Theses and Dissertations

The cylindromatosis (CYLD) is a K63-linked deubiquitinase (DUB) that has been linked to the regulation of multiple physiological or pathological processes, such as neural development, inflammation and fibrosis. However, a novel paradigm for CYLD has been recently postulated; namely that of CYLD as a mediator of cardiac disease. Nuclear factor, erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2), a master antioxidant transcription factor, has been shown to suppress cardiac pathological remodeling and dysfunction via downregulation of reactive oxygen species formation (ROS). It is normally regulated by Kelch-like ECH associated protein 1 (Keap1). However, the regulatory link between CYLD and Nrf2 in the diseased …

Responding To Their Voice: The Needs Of Postsecondary Students With Intellectual And/Or Developmental Disability, Lucretia A. Berg 2016 University of Washington Tacoma

Responding To Their Voice: The Needs Of Postsecondary Students With Intellectual And/Or Developmental Disability, Lucretia A. Berg

Ed.D. Dissertations in Practice

Young adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) enter postsecondary education (PSE) at increasing rates. Many continue to demonstrate persisting adaptive behavior needs that impede academic and employment outcomes. This qualitative case study explored one Northwest PSE program educating students with IDD regarding persisting adaptive behavior needs and whether the needs fell under the purview of occupational therapy (OT). It was the researcher’s assumption that gaining an understanding of student needs would provide cognizance of potential OT services. Thirty-two participants were recruited through both purposive and snowball sampling including: administrators; instructors; related services providers; parents or guardians; and students. In …

Bulking Up Or Bulging Over: Motivating Physical Activity Through Framing, Lauren Crupnick 2016 Union College - Schenectady, NY

Bulking Up Or Bulging Over: Motivating Physical Activity Through Framing, Lauren Crupnick

Honors Theses

Motivating people to perform physical activities can be a challenging task. One possible avenue is through the use of framing of exercise-related imagery and messages. Gain-frame imagery demonstrates the benefits of performing an activity, whereas loss-frame demonstrates the risks of not taking action on something (Tversky & Kahneman, 1981). With social media as a prevalent platform for exercise tips and tricks, it is possible that the way in which such imagery is framed in advertisements, blogs, and apps could be hindering or helping followers get closer to their physical activity goals. I hypothesized that gain-framed imagery motivates participants to have …

The Impact Of Alzheimer’S Disease In An Aging Rural Population, Lynne J. Goebel, Vivian M. Minkemeyer, Courtney Wellman

Lynne J. Goebel

West Virginia already has a large elderly population, and it is expected to increase along with the elderly population of the nation as a whole. Since the most important risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease is older age, it is not surprising that the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease is projected to increase significantly over the next thirty-five years. This paper discusses the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease in West Virginia, programs available to assist people and caregivers affected by the disease, and the associated economic burden of the disease.

Preventing And Treating Type 2 Diabetes Through A Physically Active Lifestyle, Raymond W. Leung, Jim Kamla, Man-Cheong Lee, Jennifer Y. Mak 2016 Marshall University

Preventing And Treating Type 2 Diabetes Through A Physically Active Lifestyle, Raymond W. Leung, Jim Kamla, Man-Cheong Lee, Jennifer Y. Mak

Jennifer Y Mak

By the late 1960s, the increasing number of type 2 diabetic cases in children and adolescents rapidly presented a signifi cant public health issue recognized by the American Diabetes Association (2000). Since then, the prevalence of pediatric type 2 diabetes appears to be on the rise not only in the United States but all around the world (Gungor et al., 2005). In the United States, an increase from fewer than four percent to more than 50 percent of new cases of type 2 diabetes in the pediatric population was reported between the years of 1982 and 1998 (American Diabetes Association, …

Educating Nurses On The Use Of The Bedside Mobility Assessment Tool (Bmat) To Create A Culture Of Safety, Kaylin C. Laine

Master's Projects and Capstones

Healthcare workers are more at risk for injury than workers in any other industry, the injury rate in hospitals is almost double that of the entire private sector put together (OSHA, 2013). This high rate of injury has led hospital administrators and policymakers to take a closer look at the job duties and conditions of nurses and other healthcare workers. Almost half of all healthcare worker injuries are the result of overexertion or bodily reaction, injuries that occur as a result of performing patient handling tasks. Many US states have passed laws requiring hospitals to implement Safe Patient Handling and …

Fair Weight Loss After Gastric Rebanding For Slippage, Ahmed Dalmar, Maharaj Singh, Sara K. Roloff, Thomas Y. Chua 2016 Aurora Research Institute, Aurora Health Care

Fair Weight Loss After Gastric Rebanding For Slippage, Ahmed Dalmar, Maharaj Singh, Sara K. Roloff, Thomas Y. Chua

Maharaj Singh

Background: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is one of the most common bariatric surgery procedures performed in the United States. LAGB results in safe and satisfactory weight loss, but it is often complicated with slippage, a complication requiring rebanding (reoperation). There is a paucity of studies and no uniform consensus regarding weight loss after rebanding.

Purpose: This study assessed the effect of rebanding for slippage after LAGB on weight loss up to five years.

Methods: This is a historical cohort study of 865 patients who underwent LAGB from 2001 to 2011. Rebanding was performed in 103 (11.9%) patients. Primary outcome …

Association Of Sleep Behavior To Physical Activity And Bmi In 9th And 10th Grade Students, Sonia Lina Davda

Senior Theses

Despite the topic’s popularity in research, the relationship between sleep duration and physical activity (PA) remains unclear. Measurement protocol differences, highly specific samples, and incomplete data contribute to varying results suggesting that additional research is needed. The purpose of the TRACK II study was to examine the relationship between PA, BMI, and self-reported sleep in adolescents. 369 9 th and 10 th grade students from 2 diverse school districts participated in the study. Participants completed a self-reported sleep questionnaire and had their height and weight measured. Demographic variables were also reported by participants. Actigraph accelerometers were used to objectively measure …

Policy Brief: Lifespan Respite Care Reauthorization Act, The 2015-2016 Cohort of New Hampshire Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (NH LEND) Program Trainees. 2016 The University of Maine

Policy Brief: Lifespan Respite Care Reauthorization Act, The 2015-2016 Cohort Of New Hampshire Leadership Education In Neurodevelopmental And Related Disabilities (Nh Lend) Program Trainees.

Policy Analysis

The Lifespan Respite Care Act (PL 109-442) provides critical support for families caring for loved ones at home. Family caregivers in the United States provide an estimated $470 billion worth of uncompensated care—a figure that exceeds the total Medicaid budget for 2013 (NAC Task Force, 2016). According to the National Respite Coalition, access to respite care helps protect caregiver health, strengthens families, keeps marriages intact, and prevents the need for expensive institutional long-term care. Reauthorization of the Lifespan Respite Care Act is essential to the well-being of individuals in need of long-term care and their families affected by long-term health …

Age-Associated B Cell And T Helper Cell Dysfunction In Rhesus Macaques, Evan Knox Stalvig 2016 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Age-Associated B Cell And T Helper Cell Dysfunction In Rhesus Macaques, Evan Knox Stalvig

Theses and Dissertations

The immune system undergoes drastic changes as we age, known as immunosenescence. An example of this is the dysfunction and subpopulation distribution changes of immune cells. Due to immunosenescence, the elderly have a higher risk of complications and rapid progression of new challenges to the immune system, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In an effort to determine the mechanism of dysfunction of humoral immunity due to age, I compared B cell and T cell responses to non-specific, mitogenic stimuli between aged and young adult rhesus macaque peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Analysis by flow cytometry revealed several differences in B …
