Evolution And Otitis Media: A Review, And A Model To Explain High Prevalence In Indigenous Populations, Mahmood F. Bhutta
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
Inflammation of the middle ear (otitis media) comprises a group of disorders that are highly prevalent in childhood, and indeed are amongst the most common disorders of childhood. Otitis media is also heritable, and has effects on fecundity. This means that otitis media is subject to evolution, yet the evolutionary selection forces that may determine susceptibility to otitis media have never been adequately explored.
Here I undertake a critical analysis of evolutionary forces that may determine susceptibility to middle ear inflammation. These forces include those determining function of the middle ear, those affecting host immunity, and those affecting colonization by, …

American Red Cross Sac Advisory On Obstructed Airway-Adults, Richard N. Bradley, Stamatios Lerakis
Richard N Bradley
INTRODUCTION: There were 4,700 deaths due to choking in the United States in 2012. This study was a structured literature review with the objective of determining whether in adults, either conscious or unconscious, with acute foreign body airway obstructions, if any specific resuscitation technique, compared to other techniques, leads to different outcomes.
METHODS: We developed an a priori search definition, and searched PubMed, Google, and OneSearch@IU. We sought additional articles by reviewing the reference lists of articles that we included. We included articles if they addressed original research of treatment of foreign body airway obstruction in adults. We excluded articles …

Olfactory Dysfunction Predicts 5-Year Mortality In Older Adults, 2014 University of Chicago
Olfactory Dysfunction Predicts 5-Year Mortality In Older Adults, Jayant M. Pinto, Kristen E. Wroblewski, David W. Kern, L Phillip Schumm, Martha K. Mcclintock
Psychology & Gerontology Faculty Publications
Prediction of mortality has focused on disease and frailty, although antecedent biomarkers may herald broad physiological decline. Olfaction, an ancestral chemical system, is a strong candidate biomarker because it is linked to diverse physiological processes. We sought to determine if olfactory dysfunction is a harbinger of 5-year mortality in the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project [NSHAP], a nationally representative sample of older U.S. adults. 3,005 community-dwelling adults aged 57–85 were studied in 2005–6 (Wave 1) and their mortality determined in 2010–11 (Wave 2). Olfactory dysfunction, determined objectively at Wave 1, was used to estimate the odds of 5-year, …
A Pilot Study To Investigate Concerns In Patients Undergoing Neck Dissection Surgery, 2013 The University of Western Ontario
A Pilot Study To Investigate Concerns In Patients Undergoing Neck Dissection Surgery, Daniel Sundar Raj Arulananda Doss
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Abstract:
This study investigates concerns in patients undergoing neck dissection surgery. Forty patients were recruited at Pre-surgery, Discharge and 1-month Post-surgery. The Patient Concerns Inventory - Level of Importance questionnaire (PCI-LOI), Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), Neck Dissection Impairment Index (NDII) and the University of Washington - Quality of Life questionnaire (UWQOL) were used.
The study identified "Anxiety" at Pre-surgery and "Appearance" at Discharge and 1-month Post-surgery as the important patient concerns. Patients’ concerns were found to change over time. Support for cross-sectional convergent validity of the PCI-LOI was evidenced by significant correlations between the PCI-LOI and the UWQOL …

Review Of Ear Health And Hearing Among Indigenous Australians, 2013 Edith Cowan University
Review Of Ear Health And Hearing Among Indigenous Australians, Jane F. Burns, Neil J. Thomson
Research outputs 2013
Indigenous Australians experience some of the highest levels of ear disease and hearing loss in the world, with rates up to ten times more than those for non-Indigenous Australians [4]. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to ear infections. The most common ear disease among Indigenous children is otitis media (OM), which is inflammation/infection of the middle ear typically caused by bacterial and viral pathogens. Indigenous children living in urban, rural and, particularly, remote areas, are more likely than their non-Indigenous counterparts to have OM at younger ages, more often, at a greater level of severity, and with more likelihood …
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Used For Tinnitus Suppression: A Voxel-Based Morphometry Study, 2011 Union College - Schenectady, NY
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Used For Tinnitus Suppression: A Voxel-Based Morphometry Study, Lauren E. Laitman
Honors Theses
Tinnitus is a debilitating disorder with unknown underlying mechanisms, often induced by loud noises. Tinnitus symptoms include the conscious perception of constant sound absent an external source. This study sought to determine effectiveness of treatment with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and to use voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to identify treatment related neuronal reorganization. One hertz rTMS was delivered for 20 minutes on each of 5 consecutive days. Tinnitus suppression was measured with the Tinnitus Handicap Questionnaire (THQ), and VBM was carried out on structural Magnetic Resonance images collected before and after sham-treatment and rTMS. Findings indicate the effectiveness of rTMS …
