Sum Normal Optimization Of Fuzzy Membership Functions, Daniel J. Simon Aug 2002

Sum Normal Optimization Of Fuzzy Membership Functions, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Given a fuzzy logic system, how can we determine the membership functions that will result in the best performance? If we constrain the membership functions to a certain shape (e.g., triangles or trapezoids) then each membership function can be parameterized by a small number of variables and the membership optimization problem can be reduced to a parameter optimization problem. This is the approach that is typically taken, but it results in membership functions that are not (in general) sum normal. That is, the resulting membership function values do not add up to one at each point in the domain. This …

Commercial Regional Space/Airborne Imaging, Ugur Akyazi, Ali Durmus, Birce Boga Bakirli, Arif Arin

Theses and Dissertations

In this work goal programming is used to solve a minimum cost multicommodity network flow problem with multiple goals. A single telecommunication network with multiple commodities (e.g., voice, video, data, etc.) flowing over it is analyzed. This network consists of: linear objective function, linear cost arcs, fixed capacities, specific origin-destination pairs for each commodity. A multicommodity network flow problem with goals can be successfully modeled using linear goal programming techniques. When properly modeled, network flow techniques may be employed to exploit the pure network structure of a multicommodity network flow problem with goals. Lagrangian relaxation captures the essence of the …

Advances In Space Radiation Shielding Codes, John W. Wilson, Ram K. Tripathi, Garry D. Qualls, Francis A. Cucinotta, Richard E. Prael, John W. Norbury, John H. Heinbockel, John Tweed, Giovanni De Angelis Jan 2002

Advances In Space Radiation Shielding Codes, John W. Wilson, Ram K. Tripathi, Garry D. Qualls, Francis A. Cucinotta, Richard E. Prael, John W. Norbury, John H. Heinbockel, John Tweed, Giovanni De Angelis

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Early space radiation shield code development relied on Monte Carlo methods and made important contributions to the space program. Monte Carlo methods have resorted to restricted one-dimensional problems leading to imperfect representation of appropriate boundary conditions. Even so, intensive computational requirements resulted and shield evaluation was made near the end of the design process. Resolving shielding issues usually had a negative impact on the design. Improved spacecraft shield design requires early entry of radiation constraints into the design process to maximize performance and minimize costs. As a result, we have been investigating high-speed computational procedures to allow shield analysis from …

Distributed Fault Tolerance In Optimal Interpolative Nets, Daniel J. Simon Nov 2001

Distributed Fault Tolerance In Optimal Interpolative Nets, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The recursive training algorithm for the optimal interpolative (OI) classification network is extended to include distributed fault tolerance. The conventional OI Net learning algorithm leads to network weights that are nonoptimally distributed (in the sense of fault tolerance). Fault tolerance is becoming an increasingly important factor in hardware implementations of neural networks. But fault tolerance is often taken for granted in neural networks rather than being explicitly accounted for in the architecture or learning algorithm. In addition, when fault tolerance is considered, it is often accounted for using an unrealistic fault model (e.g., neurons that are stuck on or off …

Optimal Aeroelastic Vehicle Sensor Placement For Root Migration Flight Control Applications, Abdul Ghafoor Al-Shenhabi Jul 2001

Optimal Aeroelastic Vehicle Sensor Placement For Root Migration Flight Control Applications, Abdul Ghafoor Al-Shenhabi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An important step in control design for elastic systems is the determination of the number and location of control system components, namely sensors. The number and placement of sensors can be critical to the robust functioning of active control systems, especially when the system of interest is a large high-speed aeroelastic vehicle. The position of the sensors affects not only system stability, but also the performance of the closed-loop system. In this dissertation, a new approach for sensor placement in the integrated rigid and vibrational control of flexible aircraft structures is developed. Traditional rigid-body augmentation objectives are addressed indirectly through …

Air Vehicle Optimal Trajectories For Radar Exposure Minimization, Michael C. Novy Mar 2001

Air Vehicle Optimal Trajectories For Radar Exposure Minimization, Michael C. Novy

Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses the problem of analyzing the single vehicle path planning problem for radar exposure minimization. The calculus of Variations and optimal control are applied to formulate the cost function and numerical algorithms are used to solve for the optimal paths. Cost sensitivity to path length is analyzed for flight against one radar; a second radar is then included in the formulation and the optimal path for flight between the radars is found for cases of equal and unequal radar power. The costs of the optimal path, direct path, and Voronoi diagram-generated paths are compared. Results indicate low sensitivity …

The Use Of Systems Engineering Processes And Tools To Develop A System Dynamic Simulation Model Of Engineering Support During The Development Phase Of An Acquisition Program, Jason E. Bartolomei

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the increase of system complexity and the existing draw down of manpower allocations, today's acquisitions environment desperately needs a systems approach to decision making. Many studies have been performed to model the entire government acquisition environment. Due to the high degree of aggregation, front line decision-makers have had no use for the information these models provide. This research focuses on the Air Force's largest functional support element in aircraft systems development, engineering. I will only consider one phase of the government acquisition cycle the Engineering, Manufacturing, and Development (EMD). This is the development cycle, which begins with initial …

An Integrated Risk Analysis Methodology In A Multidisciplinary Design Environment, Katrina R. Hampton Jan 2001

An Integrated Risk Analysis Methodology In A Multidisciplinary Design Environment, Katrina R. Hampton

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Design of complex, one-of-a-kind systems, such as space transportation systems, is characterized by high uncertainty and, consequently, high risk. It is necessary to account for these uncertainties in the design process to produce systems that are more reliable. Systems designed by including uncertainties and managing them, as well, are more robust and less prone to poor operations as a result of parameter variability.

The quantification, analysis and mitigation of uncertainties are challenging tasks as many systems lack historical data. In such an environment, risk or uncertainty quantification becomes subjective because input data is based on professional judgment. Additionally, there are …

Design And Rule Base Reduction Of A Fuzzy Filter For The Estimation Of Motor Currents, Daniel J. Simon Oct 2000

Design And Rule Base Reduction Of A Fuzzy Filter For The Estimation Of Motor Currents, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Fuzzy systems have been used extensively and successfully in control systems over the past few decades, but have been applied much less often to filtering problems. This is somewhat surprising in view of the dual relationship between control and estimation. This paper discusses and demonstrates the application of fuzzy filtering to motor winding current estimation in permanent magnet synchronous motors. Motor winding current estimation is an important problem because in order to implement effective closed-loop control, a good estimation of the current is needed. Motor winding currents are notoriously noisy because of electrical noise in the motor drive. We use …

Integrating Automated Multi-Disciplinary Optimization In Preliminary Design Of Non-Traditional Aircraft, Mehmet Fidanci, Jeffrey R. Miller, Douglas J. Strauss

Theses and Dissertations

Current methods of aircraft conceptual design lack the ability to quickly generate detailed analysis, particularly of nontraditional designs such as blended wing body craft. This study developed a method to resolve this problem by creating a flexible, parametrically driven conceptual model in an object-oriented, adaptive modeling environment from which analysis and optimization may rapidly be performed. These object-oriented techniques are incorporated into a traditional conceptual design process. All objects inherit dependency-tracking and demand-driven calculations. Design Analysis was performed within the modeling language and utilized interfaces to other software packages. A detailed mesh, suitable for input into finite element analysis programs, …

Approximation Model Building For Reliability & Maintainability Characteristics Of Reusable Launch Vehicles, Resit Unal, W. Douglas Morris, Nancy H. White, Roger A. Lepsch, Richard W. Brown

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper describes the development of parametric models for estimating operational reliability and maintainability characteristics for reusable launch vehicle concepts, based on vehicle size and technology support level. A reliability and maintainability analysis tool (RMAT) and response surface methods are utilized to build parametric approximation models for rapidly estimating operational reliability and maintainability characteristics such as mission completion reliability. These models that approximate RMAT, can then be utilized for fast analysis of operational requirements, for lifecycle cost estimating and for multidisciplinary design optimization.

An Intermittent-Combustion General Aviation Aircraft Engine Exhaust Noise Prediction Algorithm, Hiroko Tada

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

From an environmental point of view, the reduction of aircraft noise has become an important factor recently. There are two factors that make airplane noise: propeller noise and engine noise. This report puts emphasis on only the engine noise in order to begin understanding what airplane engine exhaust noise is. At first, the engine exhaust noise is comprehended using the Dobrzynski's engine noise theory. Next, a discussion about an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) engine system, engine exhaust system configurations, and microphone setting standards that show the ERAU engine system exhaust noise data. Finally, an Intermittent-Combustion (IC) General Aviation (GA) aircraft …

Fundamentals Of Linear State Space Systems, John Bay Jan 1999

Fundamentals Of Linear State Space Systems, John Bay

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Scholarship

This book addresses two primary deficiencies in the linear systems textbook market: a lack of development of state space methods from the basic principles and a lack of pedagogical focus. The book uses the geometric intuition provided by vector space analysis to develop in a very sequential manner all the essential topics in linear state system theory that a senior or beginning graduate student should know. It does this in an ordered, readable manner, with examples drawn from several areas of engineering. Because it derives state space methods from linear algebra and vector spaces and ties all the topics together …

The Design And Testing Of An Inlet-Airfoil For A High Altitude Remotely Piloted Aircraft, Preston Bradley Martin Apr 1998

The Design And Testing Of An Inlet-Airfoil For A High Altitude Remotely Piloted Aircraft, Preston Bradley Martin

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The following work describes and validates a methodology for the aerodynamic design of a low drag, efficient inlet-airfoil to be used on the cooling installations of a high altitude remotely piloted aircraft. Owing to the primary aircraft design requirement of subsonic endurance at high altitude (85,000 ft), the flight conditions present an aerodynamically unfavorable combination of low chord Reynolds number (500,000) and high subsonic Mach number (0.5). At this flight condition, the inlet-airfoil must meet the heat exchanger cooling flow requirements while maintaining the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil. As a result, the design method is closely coupled with not …

This research attempts to make an initial analysis of a two stage compressor to determine values of blade angles and spacing to chord ratios for both stages that produce the highest possible efficiency for …

Input Design For Systems Under Identification Using Indirect And Direct Methods, Marco P. Schoen Mar 1997

Input Design For Systems Under Identification Using Indirect And Direct Methods, Marco P. Schoen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The motivation for system identification can be manifold. In this work, the provocation to identify unknown system characteristics is derived from the control engineering point of view. That is, one intends to design a control strategy based on the identified system properties. The used system identification methods are the Open-Loop Kalman filter System Identification method (OKID) and the Closed-Loop System Identification method (CLID). It is shown that the quantitative largest error of the system identification is given by its model representation, that is the attempt to describe a system with model parameters which poses a linear relationship with the input/output …

The Preliminary Design Of A Standardized Spacecraft Bus For Small Tactical Satellites, Gerald Ashby, Darren Buck, Robert Carneal Iv, Tansel Cokuysal, Ahmet Donmez, James From, Todd Krueger, Brian Robinson Nov 1996

The Preliminary Design Of A Standardized Spacecraft Bus For Small Tactical Satellites, Gerald Ashby, Darren Buck, Robert Carneal Iv, Tansel Cokuysal, Ahmet Donmez, James From, Todd Krueger, Brian Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

Current satellite design philosophies concentrate on optimizing and tailoring a particular satellite bus to a specific payload or mission. Today's satellites take a long time to build, checkout, and launch. An alternate approach shifts the design paradigm to one that focuses on access to space, enabling tactical deployment on demand and the capability to put current payload technology into orbit, versus several years by today's standards, by which time the technology is already obsolete. This design study applied systems engineering methods to create a satellite bus architecture that can accommodate a range of remote sensing mission modules. System-level and subsystem-level …
