Gmo Products And The Food Industry: A Literature Review Of Opinions And Behaviors By U.S. Restaurants, Jake Harrison, Kenneth Bartkus
Curiosity
The health implications of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been the subject of considerable debate in the literature. One aspect of the debate is the apparent disconnect between what is reported in the scientific communities and what is reported in the general public. Specifically, it has been reported that while “Nearly 9 out of 10 scientists from the American Association for the Advancement of Science say GMOs are ‘generally safe’ to eat, more than half of the general public believe it is not a good idea.” This presents somewhat of a dilemma for companies, such as restaurants, who are involved …

How Does Your Garden Grow? The Interface Of Employee And Sales Growth Post Ipo, Varkey K. Titus Jr., Jenna R. Pieper, Matthew Josefy, Theresa M. Welbourne

Research Summary: Firms often succumb to a growth imperative, yet little is known about how congruence between various forms of growth affects firm value. We argue that the (in)congruence between net hiring rates (e.g., growth in the number of employees) and sales growth has significant implications for firm value, assessed via Tobin's Q. We further contend that R&D expenditures and industry dynamism—factors that influence a firm's ability to realize value creation—moderate the relationship between growth pattern and firm value. We use a sample of 1,181 firms that conducted their initial public offerings from 1996 to 2006 to test our conceptual …

Made In The Usa: Technological Corporatism, Infrastructure Regulation, And Dupont 1902-1917, Roman Y. Shemakov
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
The turn of the twentieth century radically renewed industrial organization across the United States. Early American corporations -- centralized manufacturing hubs with journeymen and apprentices laboring under one roof -- were seldom prepared for the transformations that scientific management and structural reorganization would bring to social relations. At the helm of World War 1, DuPont became the epitome of broader national restructuring. Through a close relationship with American military industries and legislatures, the DuPont brothers came to represent Business as an inseparable component of the State. While labor historiography has primarily focused on organizers’ relationship with regulators, important segments of …

The Requirements Of Agile Pricing Policies To Build A Competitive Maritime Sector: Reflections On The Egyptian Ports, Zeinab Shawky Younis, Zeinab Nawar
Business Administration
The strong growth of world merchandise trade recorded the highest in 2017. This was the strongest indicator within a period of six years carrying a ratio of 1.5% which is far above 1.0 the ratio following 2018 financial crisis. The period up to 2023 carries positive prospects for short and medium term and will yield to a growth of global GDP by more than 3.0. The question arising and addressed in the review across the research study sheds the light on the inability of the Egyptian Economy to hunt the opportunities of this GDP growth and the increase of global …

Strategic, Tactical And Operational Decisions In Family Businesses: A Qualitative Case Study, Ravindra Hewa Kuruppuge, Ales Gregar
Strategic, Tactical And Operational Decisions In Family Businesses: A Qualitative Case Study, Ravindra Hewa Kuruppuge, Ales Gregar
The Qualitative Report
Previous studies of family businesses have no common agreement on what should be the most effective and efficient approach for making decisions at different managerial levels to solve business issues. Accordingly, the main objective of this study was to understand the nature of decision-making by family members who are involved in a business in different capacities such as owners, owner managers, and managers. Locating the research in the interpretivist paradigm, and utilizing qualitative case study methods (Yin, 1994), we interviewed 24 respondents from 12 well-known family firms from different districts in Sri Lanka. Thematic analysis indicated that the consultative approach …

Gender Differences In Acquiring Business Support From Online Social Networks, Tammi C. Redd, Sibin Wu
Management Faculty Publications
Social Networks have always been an invaluable resource for entrepreneurs attempting to engage in venture creation and growth. While differences in gender and its effect on traditional social networks have been explored, it is worth examining the gender effect when using the internet to create online network connections that supply useful resources. This study investigates the difference between male and female entrepreneurs’ social networks, the resources obtained from those networks, and the evolution of the ever-valuable weak tie. Hypotheses are tested using analysis of variance and analyses reveal women that female entrepreneurs and male entrepreneurs use the online network connections …
Creating Silence: How Managerial Narcissism Decreases Employee Voice, Jake Harrison, Alexander C. Romney
Creating Silence: How Managerial Narcissism Decreases Employee Voice, Jake Harrison, Alexander C. Romney
Curiosity
Narcissism in organizations is becoming increasingly prevalent, as evidenced by the growing number of CEOs that seek acclaim and dominance, often at the expense of others (Chatterjee, 2017). Narcissism is defined as “individuals for whom enhancing the positivity of the self (specifically, to achieve status and esteem) is overwhelmingly important” (Campbell, 2004), and most often wields a detrimental influence on organizations. In the management literature, efficacy is defined as “a person’s estimate that a given behavior will lead to certain outcomes” (Bandura, 1977), and employees who hold a stronger sense of personal self-efficacy will display more active efforts to improve …

Top Management Incentives And Financial Flexibility: The Case Of Make-Whole Call Provisions, Melvin Jameson, Tao-Hsien Dolly King, Andrew Prevost
Top Management Incentives And Financial Flexibility: The Case Of Make-Whole Call Provisions, Melvin Jameson, Tao-Hsien Dolly King, Andrew Prevost
Department of Finance Faculty Research
Consistent with the premise that make‐whole call provisions enhance value‐creating financial flexibility, we find that higher sensitivity of managerial wealth to stock price (delta) increases the likelihood that corporate bonds contain make‐whole provisions. Building on the results of related research, post‐issue financial performance of make‐whole callable bond issuers increases in delta. In line with prior findings that demonstrate financial flexibility can be costly to bondholders, we find that managerial equity incentives impact the incremental effect of make‐whole provisions on the pricing of corporate debt securities. Consistent with the flexibility explanation, we also find that the market response as measured by …
Identifying Human Trafficking Networks In Louisiana By Using Authorship Attribution And Network Modeling, Hassan Marzoughi Ardakani
Identifying Human Trafficking Networks In Louisiana By Using Authorship Attribution And Network Modeling, Hassan Marzoughi Ardakani
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Human trafficking or modern slavery is a problem that has plagued every U.S. state, in both urban and rural areas. During the past decades, online advertisements for sex trafficking have rapidly increased in numbers. The advancement of the Internet and smart phones have made it easier for sex traffickers to contact and recruit their victims and advertise and sell them online. Also, they have made it more difficult for law enforcement to trace the victims and identify the traffickers. Sadly, more than fifty percent of the victims of sex trafficking are children, many of which are exploited through the Internet. …

Shopping Activity At Warehouse Club Stores And Its Competitive And Network-Density Implications, Stanley Frederick W.T. Lim, Elliot Rabinovich, Sungho Park, Minha Hwang
School of Business: Faculty Scholarship
Warehouse club (WC) retailers have typically expanded to new markets using stand‐alone stores, rather than pursuing dense store networks as other (non‐WC) retailers have in the past. While this strategy generates operating efficiencies, it also imposes high travel costs on households to shop, which calls into question WC stores’ resilience to spatial competition from stores operating other formats. We examine this phenomenon by using data on households’ shopping activity across markets served by Costco Wholesale stores. Specifically, we evaluate these stores’ resilience to spatial competition by estimating the share of households’ expenditures relative to travel costs to shop at the …

Predictor Of Turnover Intention Of Register Nurses: Job Satisfaction Or Work Engagement?, Yolanda Edwards-Dandridge, Brandon D. Simmons, Douglas G. Campbell
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
Both employee job satisfaction (JS) and employee work engagement (WE) have been examined as possible predictors of employees’ intention to voluntarily leave a specific job or company, known as turnover intention (TI). While the body of knowledge has grown concerning the nature of TI, there remains the unsettled question of which of the two concepts most accurately predicates TI. The high turnover rate of registered nurses (RNs) in hospitals in the U.S. presented an opportunity to examine if JS and WE predict, and to what degree, among RNs. For this quantitative correlational research probability sampling was used to identify 155 …

Exploring The Role Of Transformational Leaders In The Mentorship Of Top-Level Administrators: A Case Study Of The Veterans Health Administration (Vha) Visn Lead Program, Frederick Giovanni White Jr.
Dissertations and Theses
Despite the proliferation of studies focused on transformational leadership, there is a lack of clarity related to how transformational leaders are developed in public organizations and the impact of mentors in this process. This is particularly troubling given a 2017 Bureau of Labor Statistics estimate that over 44% of the current U.S. workforce is 45 years or older.
In public and private settings, organizations are challenged to develop the competencies critical at higher levels of management in their future leaders, specifically advanced human and conceptual skills. These skills are most useful for emerging leaders that will have the responsibilities to …

Strategies To Address Substance-Abusing And Substance-Impaired Healthcare Professionals, Anna Marie Smith, Douglas G. Campbell
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
This research explored strategies used by some healthcare leaders to address substance abusing and impaired healthcare professionals. The conceptual framework for this qualitative case study was the concept of due diligence. Data were collected from 40 managers and supervisors, 3 executives, and company documents, and analyzed to reveal elements of a comprehensive strategy. A effective comprehensive strategy consists of policies that address the causes, the short term and long term aspects, and both the ethical and legal aspects. Policies and procedures are equally applied, are easily accessible, are well communicated, are supported by training, provides positive encouragement. provides a path …
