The Complexity In The Discrepancy: A Holistic View Of The Electricity Supply And Demand Discrepancy In Nigeria, Olufunso O. Olulafe

Student Scholarship

The gap between electricity supply and demand, in Nigeria, is not decreasing. To gain more insight into the phenomenon, we sought to take a holistic approach at analysis and learn about the relationship between dimensions of investment, policy, entrepreneurial orientation innovation, and the electricity situation in Nigeria. In this qualitative study, we interviewed 30 individuals, who have experience in Nigeria. The interviewees also have sound perspectives on key stakeholders in the electricity ecosystem. Building on this foundation, we make the case that the dimension of national character, and its second order constructs has a relationship with the previous dimensions, in …

Emergence And Growth Of The Medical Device Entrepreneurial Ecosystem In Minnesota, Brian Abraham Jan 2018

Emergence And Growth Of The Medical Device Entrepreneurial Ecosystem In Minnesota, Brian Abraham

Student Scholarship

Different geographic regions in the United States have experienced varying degrees of entrepreneurial activity that give rise, maturity and in many cases declines in regional industry vertical strengths. We investigated the medical device industry in Minnesota to explain how entrepreneurial or new venture communities emerge, operate and perform. Absorptive capacity, social network theory, agent-network theory and technology diffusion are clearly evident phenomena observed. We used a qualitative, grounded theory methodology to interview 20 experts with knowledge of the ecosystem studied. We found significant development impediments created with the emergence of policy that has slowed technology commercialization as the regional medical …

Beyond The Grade: Bonding Faculty Behaviors Predicting Community College Student Commitment To Learning, Lucia D. Heddleson

Student Scholarship

This study investigated factors influencing community college student academic retention\, specifically a student’s commitment to learn. Data was obtained from two local community colleges\, and the study’s proposed model was evaluated using structural equation modelling. Student Identity Capital and Relational Climate functioned as mediating factors influencing academic retention as they relate to supportive faculty behaviors. Direct effects of supportive bonding faculty behaviors on academic retention were also considered. Results supported mediation from student identity capital to academic retention\, and relational climate was found to be insignificant. Finally\, supportive faculty behaviors proved to be a significant factor overall in the evaluation …

Factors Influencing The Case Selection Of Irs Special Agents, Robert A. Warren

Student Scholarship

This study examines how Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation (CI) Special Agents select cases to investigate during a period of stagnant budgets and significant personnel attrition. Semi-structured interviews (N=30) of current and retired agents and supervisors, along with information gleaned from published reports and through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, suggests that special agents did not believe that the 13% reduction of IRS-CI's appropriated funding from 2010 to 2016 impeded their ability to select and investigate the best tax and money laundering cases, even though the funding gap resulted in a 19% reduction in special agents. However, the data also …

Food Deserts: What Are The Decisions To Achieving A Healthy Life And Well-Being In Low Income €“ Low Access Neighborhoods?, Roxanne Jimenez

Student Scholarship

There has been a great deal of academic material and public policy published on food deserts, however, there still are significant gaps of understanding in regard to the lived experience of those individuals residing within those geographical locations. This study employed a qualitative methodology to elicit the lived experiences of 20 people who are living within a food desert. The findings from this research suggest those residing in food deserts, do not plan their purchases and travel to markets outside of their immediate neighborhoods in search of food products that have quality, variety and lower price points. It was also …

Building Globally Accepted Local Brands And Locally Authentic Global Brands, Ellen Schmidt-Devlin Dec 2017

Building Globally Accepted Local Brands And Locally Authentic Global Brands, Ellen Schmidt-Devlin

Student Scholarship

In academic literature, brands have been categorized as either global or local, driven primarily by the distance their businesses reach beyond their national borders. This difference is evaporating with the advent of digital marketing and ecommerce. Academics clearly recognize this changing landscape and have researched the impacts to consumer perceptions and identities, but literature has provided less strategic direction for global and local brand leaders as they compete head-to-head in the fast-paced global marketplace. This qualitative study of fifty executives in the global/local sports product industry reveals distinctly different paths taken by global brands toward local authenticity and local brands …

Success Towards Sustainable Development In Lagging Us Cities? A Grounded Study, Larry Clay Jr. Dec 2017

Success Towards Sustainable Development In Lagging Us Cities? A Grounded Study, Larry Clay Jr.

Student Scholarship

By 2030, it is projected that 7 out of 10 people will be urban dwellers. However, as more people migrate to cities in search of a better life and urban populations grow, housing, food, water, air, transportation, energy, and human well-being issues intensify. Issues of climate change, energy use, agricultural land and watershed protection, and transportation, among others, already stretch beyond the budget frames, municipal geography, and election cycles of most local government managers. Pressures from non-governmental organizations and society as whole are forcing the local business community as well as government officials to work together in solving some the …

Delivering Service-Based New Product Development: Stewardship Cabability Differentiates Success From Failure In Back-End Innovation, Nancy Y. Nee

Student Scholarship

Previous research and literature highlight the factors that influence the success and failure of delivering new product development (NPD) to achieve back-end innovation. In particular, previous research identifies the key importance of executive sponsorship/championship on the success of back-end innovation by delivering NPD. Despite this key finding, NPD delivery continues to fail even with executive sponsorship/championship engagement. Stewardship is a construct that executive sponsors/champions use to ensure that the NPD delivery is aligned with the best interests of the organization and its stakeholders. The aim of this study is to provide an understanding of how stewardship affects the sponsorship/championship role …

Sports Leaders, Sensemaking, And Self-Preservation: Uncovering The Real Crisis In Sport, Daryl L. Jones

Student Scholarship

The sports industry often experiences critical, high-risk situations related to crisis management decisions. Devastating consequences often occur because of the methods used by sports leaders in processing information associated with crisis. As chaotic as these crisis-based events may be; often times the true antecedents of crisis result from practices and processes that exist within, not outside of, sports organizations. Despite the global economic impact and increasing significance of sports, there is a shortage of empirical research to help us understand key influences on industry leaders, specifically related to times of crisis. The factors that impact the formation of perspectives and …

Cultivating Relationships From A Common Cor*: What Teachers Do To Relate To Othered Students, Lucia Desantis-Heddleson

Student Scholarship

This research is focused on the teacher's perspective of the dyadic relationship between teachers and othered students--students who are traditionally disregarded and/or are considered outside of the norm (Borrero et al., 2012). The study at hand is limited to this dyad, but is crucial for the understanding of what behaviors, social and emotional intelligence competencies, and practices make a teacher good at reaching othered students beyond the mere academics of doing school. The role of a teacher within the confines of schooling is changing because schools have become institutions involved in socialization, motivation, and adapting to change (i.e., preparing students …

How U.S. Executive Expatriates Work In Environments Of Pervasive Corruption, Carl H. Greppin

Student Scholarship

How do U.S. expatriate executives who live and work in countries with pervasive corruption make choices about the degree to which they participate in corruption? To answer this question, I interviewed 30 U.S. executives who worked in such countries. Some refused to participate in corrupt practices, others chose to reluctantly succumb to extortion, while others willingly participated in corruption. I illustrate costs the executives incur from making the decisions and reasons for why they make the decisions. I found that social norms played a significant role in their decisions. There are four social norms - personal norms (individuals' standards for …

How can SMEs compete and grow in the face of today's complex, turbulent, and fiercely competitive business environment? The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of how leaders of successful SMEs enable their businesses to survive and …

Does A Physician's Decision Making Process Effect Patient Participation In The Treatment Choices Of Primary Immunodeficiency?, Chris Lamb

Student Scholarship

Increased patient participation in the treatment of chronic diseases is thought to result in improved patient health. Increased participation should lead to earlier diagnosis and better treatment. However, the role of the physician in facilitating patient participation has not been extensively studied. Dual process theory and shared decision making theory were used to create a predictive model. Then a quantitative study was then performed on 330 physicians in the US treating a chronic disorder: Primary Immunodeficiency. The results suggest that a physician's decision making style (rational vs. heuristic) and orientation (patient-centric) has an effect on the level of patient participation. …
