Ownership Patterns And Corporate Performance, Jinesh Panchali
Ownership Patterns And Corporate Performance, Jinesh Panchali
IIMB Management Review
Corporates have emerged as vital economic institutions for growth, commanding a large proportion of social resources. Hence, they are, like the State, answerable to society for the efficient use of resources. Corporate governance is the social, legal, and economic process through which companies function and are held accountable1 . The structure of corporate ownership has a major impact on the way companies are managed and controlled. An attempt has been made here to explore ownership structure in India and abroad and to empirically analyse corporate performance in the Indian context, at various levels of ownership across ownership categories.

IIMB Management Review
The purpose of this book as stated on the back cover is to ‘illustrate and explain the connection between everyday business problems and the tools and modes of thought of the scientist’. While enough has been written about how business principles can (and must) be applied for successful commercial R&D, there is very little written about how an understanding of common scientific principles can help business-persons.

IIMB Management Review
Customer dissatisfaction with products and services, long queues at hospitals and railway stations, stock out/excess stock situations, overflowing solid waste bins at street corners, delayed deliveries and time lag in new product development, steeply increasing project costs, high rates of wastage in the manufacturing process these are among the numerous instances indicating the lack of systems approach and inadequate appreciation of Operations Research (OR) methods in the Indian management and administrative network scenario.

Crafting The Strategy: Concepts And Cases In Sategic Management By Ranjan Das, New Delhi: Tata Mcgraw Hill, 2000., S D Kshirsagar
IIMB Management Review
This quotation summarises aptly the dichotomy of approaches to strategy as an encompassing concept and to its implementation in a business. If strategy is a science in all its facets, its descriptive or normative theories could be applied to a business situation. Seminal contributions in this respect made by H Igor Ansoff, Kenneth R Andrews and others, established that ‘sustained performance’ is determined by a firm’s ability to find a fit among its intrinsic capabilities, the environmental factors, and the strategy it adopts. In this sense, strategy is not only contextual but also resource specific. It is, therefore, dynamic and …

Applications Of Or In The Indian Context, R Sankar, Muthulingam Suresh
IIMB Management Review
Operations Research (OR) originated in England during World War II. The first applications aimed at improving the operational efficiency of the radar defence systems deployed by the Royal Air Force. Very soon thereafter, OR methods and techniques were applied successfully to the resolution of complex industrial and commercial problems in areas such as scheduling, inventory management, strategic planning, resource allocation and transportation.

The Leader’S Shadow: Exploration And Development Of Executive Character By William Q Judge, New Delhi: Sage Publications, 1999., V Uberoy
IIMB Management Review
The subject of the book and its introduction by the author touch upon a very crucial and much ignored aspect of leadership development. It deals with the inner core of the individual-what the author calls, quoting Jung, ‘complementary internal aspects of leadership’ and ‘shadows’ or the hidden parts of the inner self. This is in sharp contrast to much of the literature, where stress is laid solely on the development of outward behaviour and styles of a leader, in isolation from the character qualities. The book therefore arouses much interest and anticipation in the reader who hopes to discover ways …

Hybridization Of Dna By Sequential Immobilization Of Oligonucleotides At The Air-Water Interface, Murali Sastry, Vidya Ramakrishnan, Mrunalini Pattarkine, Anand Gole, K. N. Ganesh
Faculty Works
The hybridization of DNA by sequential electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding immobilization of single-stranded complementary oligonucleotides at the air-water interface with cationic Langmuir monolayers is demonstrated. The complexation of the single-stranded DNA molecules with octadecylamine (ODA) Langmuir monolayers was followed in time by monitoring the pressure-area isotherms. A large (and slow) expansion of the ODA monolayer was observed during each stage of complexation in the following sequence: primary single-stranded DNA followed by complementary single-stranded DNA followed by the intercalator, ethidium bromide. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of the ODA-DNA complex were formed on different substrates and characterized using quartz-crystal microgravimetry (QCM), Fourier transform infrared …

Toward A Theory Of Technological Change, John Rodney Franklin
Toward A Theory Of Technological Change, John Rodney Franklin
Student Scholarship
Theories of technological change are generally constructed based on assumptions that the technological artifact is a member of a historical line of technological advance (trajectory and evolutionary theories) or that novel technological developments simply "happen" (happenstance theories). Where a more constructivist view is taken technological change is assumed to be a social construct driven by the societal elements of human relationships and initiative. This paper takes a different approach to technological change positing that a combination of social structure and human agency act in a recursive manner to push a technological artifact forward. Using Anthony Giddens' structuration theory as the …

Competitive Priorities And Managerial Performance: A Taxonomy Of Small Manufacturers, Ravi Kathuria
Competitive Priorities And Managerial Performance: A Taxonomy Of Small Manufacturers, Ravi Kathuria
Business Faculty Articles and Research
Much of the research in manufacturing strategy has focused on specific relationships between a few constructs, with relatively little emphasis on typologies and taxonomies (Bozarth and McDermott, 1998). Using data from 196 respondents in 98 manufacturing units, this study develops a taxonomy of small manufacturers based on their emphasis on several competitive priorities. The annual sales for sixty-four percent of the participating units in this study are below US $50 million, which is on the lower side as compared to other studies in this area (cf., Miller & Roth, 1994). The study findings indicate that different groups of manufacturers – …

The Internet revolution is here to stay. The medium is dynamic, interactive, and global. Though it originated for use by defence and academic institutions to share information, it is now integrating the people of the world into a true global village. Success stories of Indians in the Silicon Valley are legion, and they seem to be infecting people here in India. Young men with great visions, fantastic business plans and solid teamwork are setting up. businesses using the Net as the gateway to a global presence.

IIMB Management Review
Charismatic Leadership in Organisations is a continuation of the earlier research work published by the authors in their book Charismatic Leadership, 1988. The book under review takes off by building a behavioural model of charismatic leadership. The model goes through three stages. In Stage 1, sensitivity to environments urg es the lead e r to change the status quo. Stage 2
pertains to the development and projection of vision , which he effectively articulates in a n idealised form. Vi s ioning has been considered as a core e element in charis m at ic leadership. In Stage 3, a …
Managing Corporate Culture: Leveraging Diversity To Give India A Global Competitive Edge By Karl Ulrich, R S Chaudhry And Kishan S Rana, Macmillan India, 2000, Pp 199, Price: Rs 260., Vijay Padaki
IIMB Management Review
The 90s witnessed a transformation of Indian business and industry that was at the same time exciting and frightening. The economic reforms, although implemented in graded installments, had a ready response, matched with good business sense. They made an impact on several fronts, not the least important one being the increasing interest and confidence in other countries to partner Indian businesses for mutual benefit. On the other hand, there were the obvious difficulties of growing too suddenly, too
fast and, as some observers felt, too late. The rapidity of growth carried the distinct possibility of growing recklessly rather than responsibly. …

Part of being a good manager is being aware of the moral dimensions of one's role in the network and in the organisation. Managers can unwittingly engage in a wide range of role-related acts that are ethically questionable.

Supply-Chain Synchronization: Lessons From Hyundai Motor Company, Chan K. Hahn, Edward A. Duplaga, Janet L. Hartley
Management Faculty Publications
One of the challenges of supply-chain management is developing ways to effectively integrate activities across organizations on the supply chain. Hyundai Motor Company developed mechanisms to coordinate production planning and scheduling activities among supply-chain members. Hyundai Motor's production-and-sales-control (P/SC) department uses regularly scheduled cross-functional meetings and scheduling policies to coordinate supply-chain activities. When implementing this process, the P/SC department overcame structural, environ mental, and behavioral problems. Although Hyundai manage ment concedes that the process is not perfect, communication among supply-chain members has improved, and the P/SC group has successfully promoted mutual understanding and respect among functional areas. The primary benefit, …
