Leadership is hard to define but easy to recognize and is found in every facet of life. Leaders themselves range from good to bad, the extremities of which are determined by their character, actions, perception of self, how they are perceived by others and their worldviews. An individual’s values provide the basis for ethical decisions, which makes self-awareness a critical element in the development of one’s leader identity. This article provides an overview of leader identity development and offers ways for leaders to apply ethics in their everyday lives.

The Effects Of Social Spending On Entrepreneurship In Developed Nations, Shelby Solomon, Joshua S. Bendickson, Eric W. Liguori Feb 2021

The Effects Of Social Spending On Entrepreneurship In Developed Nations, Shelby Solomon, Joshua S. Bendickson, Eric W. Liguori

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

Understanding how national policy can spur entrepreneurial activity is central to entrepreneurship research. Over the past decade, there has been a limited set of research findings to suggest that social spending may increase entrepreneurship in addition to serving more direct social purposes. We examine the topic through the lens of market failure theory and Austrian economics. In accordance with the Austrian perspective, we theorize that social spending increases the opportunity cost of entrepreneurship, thereby decreasing the attractiveness of entrepreneurship in comparison to salaried employment. Drawing from a sample of 31 developed countries spanning 2004–2011, we investigate the effects of social …

Too Unsafe To Monitor? How Board-Ceo Cognitive Conflict And Chair Leadership Shape Outside Director Monitoring, Dennis B. Veltrop, Pieter-Jan Bezemer, Gavin Nicholson, Amedeo Pugliese Feb 2021

Too Unsafe To Monitor? How Board-Ceo Cognitive Conflict And Chair Leadership Shape Outside Director Monitoring, Dennis B. Veltrop, Pieter-Jan Bezemer, Gavin Nicholson, Amedeo Pugliese

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Research into boards of directors has provided mixed support for the view that outside directors' independence or leadership by an independent chair improves monitoring. In this study, we use a micro-level approach to provide a better understanding of why outside directors have difficulty in monitoring the CEO. We highlight that an important reason for this lies in the boardroom dynamics associated with (a) outside directors' cognitive conflict with the CEO and (b) the chair's leadership of the board. Our inductive analyses of video observations of board meetings in five Australian corporations revealed the importance of chair participative leadership during disagreement …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

An interdisciplinary approach to the study of nepotism is taken into consideration in this article. Nepotism is one of the least researched and most poorly defined human resource approaches, and it has an enormous effect on companies that hire staff. Different terms, such as Nepotism, Cronyism, and favoritism, have an adverse influence on the company's efficiency and lead to poor performance. From an interdisciplinary viewpoint, organizations often look at nepotism to better represent such policies and practices on companies. The research work identifies significant contributors, recent trends, contexts, and supports in the study field for any further direction. A sample …

Managing Quality In Aviation Projects, James W. Marion, Tracey M. Richardson, Vittal Anantatmula

Publications

From aircraft manufacturing, product customization, aircraft maintenance, and aircraft launch and recovery, project management is threaded through all aspects of aviation. The aim of this mixed-methods research seeks to understand how quality is managed and assured in aviation projects, whether or not the current quality management framework is applicable to the aviation industry, and how quality should ultimately be managed in aviation projects. The results of …

Ownership Structure, Corporate Governance And Earnings Management In China, Li Honglin Feb 2021

Ownership Structure, Corporate Governance And Earnings Management In China, Li Honglin

Student Works (2020-2029)

To address the inherent inefficiencies of state-owned enterprises (SOEs), China has adopted partial and gradual privatization reforms and a series of corporate governance reforms, such as introducing independent directors and audit committees, and reestablishing audit firms. These reforms have resulted in the emergence and rise of private-owned enterprises (POEs) and improved the management efficiency of SOEs in China. Driven by the stronger earnings management motivations of POEs and the potentially greater effect of corporate governance in POEs, this study is conducted to examine whether Chinese SOEs perform a lower level of earnings management than Chinese POEs and whether corporate governance …

Learning Through Dialogue During Intelligence Assessments: A Translation Of Theory Into Practice, Adrian Wolfberg, Nancy M. Dixon Feb 2021

Learning Through Dialogue During Intelligence Assessments: A Translation Of Theory Into Practice, Adrian Wolfberg, Nancy M. Dixon

Engaged Management ReView

We translate a theory into the practice of intelligence assessments. Following Karl Weick’s (1993) retrospective approach, the translation relies on previously published evaluations of intelligence assessment practices. Intelligence assessments are used in organizations to inform leaders of threats and opportunities. The theory we apply describes how an intelligence analyst learns through dialogue during the practice of conducting an intelligence assessment, and it consists of four learning archetypes: cooperative, focused, survival, and reflective. The theory is based on the differential effects on learning caused by the interaction between information overload and equivocality. We use the role of dialogue in the theory …

Recycle System Design For End-Of-Life Electronics In Developing Countries, Pedro M. Reyes, Jianghong Man, Patrick Jaska, John K. Visich, Michael Gravier Feb 2021

Recycle System Design For End-Of-Life Electronics In Developing Countries, Pedro M. Reyes, Jianghong Man, Patrick Jaska, John K. Visich, Michael Gravier

Management Department Faculty Journal Articles

This paper examines recycling of end-of-life products in developing countries to determine the most reasonable collection policy in order to increase profits. The process of self-recycling by original manufacturers is examined using simulations. The simulations were based on three different investment percentage collection/remanufacture policies for end-of-life products. Results offered here can help decision makers understand tradeoffs they face as they decide how to best process turned products (refurbish, remanufacture, or recycle). Results from simulations presented in this paper can help firms in developing countries understand and improve their recycling processes. Simulation of the various collection policies for end-of-life products shows …
