Clinical Utility Of Neutrophil To Lymphocyte Ratio In Sickle Cell Disease With Vaso-Occlusive Crisis, Satish Maharaj, Simone Chang

Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Therapy

Background and objectives: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio represents a universally accessible value that correlates with inflammation and prognosis in several disease states; however, the role of this biomarker in sickle cell disease remains poorly explored. Hence, the objective of the present study was to determine its potential clinical utility in patients with sickle cell disease.

Patients: Herein, we retrospectively reviewed 143 patients with sickle cell disease who presented to the emergency department with fever and painful vaso-occlusive crisis.

Results: The examined cohort had a prevalence of 11% confirmed bacterial infection, with approximately two-thirds reporting the use of hydroxyurea. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio …

The thyroid gland is the crucial organ in the human body, secreting two hormones that help to regulate the human body's metabolism. Thyroid disease is a severe medical complaint that could be developed by high Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels or an infection in the thyroid tissues. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are two critical conditions caused by insufficient thyroid hormone production and excessive thyroid hormone production, respectively. Machine learning models can be used to precisely process the data generated from different medical sectors and to build a model to predict several diseases. In this paper, we use different machine-learning algorithms to …

Potential Alzheimer's Disease Plasma Biomarkers, Taylor Estepp 2023 University of Kentucky

Potential Alzheimer's Disease Plasma Biomarkers, Taylor Estepp

Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics

In this series of studies, we examined the potential of a variety of blood-based plasma biomarkers for the identification of Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression and cognitive decline. With the end goal of studying these biomarkers via mixture modeling, we began with a literature review of the methodology. An examination of the biomarkers with demographics and other health factors found evidence of minimal risk of confounding along the causal pathway from biomarkers to cognitive performance. Further study examined the usefulness of linear combinations of biomarkers, achieved via partial least squares (PLS) analysis, as predictors of various cognitive assessment scores and clinical …

Characterization Of The Function And Regulation Of The Hmpv Phosphoprotein, Rachel Thompson 2023 University of Kentucky

Characterization Of The Function And Regulation Of The Hmpv Phosphoprotein, Rachel Thompson

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a non-segmented, negative strand RNA virus (NNSV) that frequently causes respiratory tract infections in infants, the elderly, and the immunocompromised. Despite the initial identification of HMPV in 2001, there are currently no FDA approved antivirals or vaccines available. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of HMPV replication is critical for the identification of novel therapeutic targets. A key feature in the replication cycle of HMPV and other NNSVs is the formation of membrane-less, liquid-like replication and transcription centers in the cytosol termed inclusion bodies (IBs). Recent work on NNSV IBs suggests they display characteristics of biomolecular condensates formed …

The Development And Characterization Of Nanobodies Specific To Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 4a3 (Ptp4a3/Prl-3) To Dissect And Target Its Role In Cancer., Caroline Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 4A3 (PTP4A3 or PRL-3) is an oncogenic dual-specificity phosphatase that drives tumor metastasis, promotes cancer cell survival, and is correlated with poor patient prognosis in a variety of solid tumors and leukemias. The mechanisms that drive PRL-3’s oncogenic functions are not well understood, in part due to a lack of research tools available to study this protein. The development of such tools has proven difficult, as the PRL family is ~80% homologous and the PRL catalytic binding pocket is shallow and hydrophobic. Currently available small molecules do not exhibit binding specificity for PRL-3 over PRL family members, …

Examining The Effects Of Hyperglycemia On Retinal Regeneration, Emmanuella EC Kyllians 2023 University of Kentucky

Examining The Effects Of Hyperglycemia On Retinal Regeneration, Emmanuella Ec Kyllians

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Diabetes is a disease that affects how the body processes glucose, leading to a cascade of other complications, one of which is diabetic retinopathy (DR). DR is a neurovascular disease that affects the retina and research has revealed the role of retinal neurodegeneration in its development. Animal models like zebrafish have emerged as important tools for studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying DR. On the other hand, retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a degenerative disease that involves the progressive degeneration of rods and cones, and hyperglycemia has been found to impair regeneration. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effects …

Combatting Bacterial Infections: The Efficacy Of Poly-Gamma-Glutamic Acid On The Prevention Of Nasopharyngeal Infections Among Individuals With Cleft Lip And Palate, Florence Pun 2023 Scripps College

Combatting Bacterial Infections: The Efficacy Of Poly-Gamma-Glutamic Acid On The Prevention Of Nasopharyngeal Infections Among Individuals With Cleft Lip And Palate, Florence Pun

Scripps Senior Theses

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a medical condition where children are born with an unfused lip and palate. While surgery is required to fuse the lip and palate, there are other conditions that children with CLP face after surgeries, such as otitis media (OM), speech impediments, and difficulty breathing. Particularly, OM occurs frequently in individuals with CLP because the tensor veli palatini muscles cannot open the Eustachian tube frequently and ventilate the middle ear properly, even after surgery. This thesis is a research proposal to evaluate whether γ-PGA can be used in nasal washes to safely prevent nasopharyngeal infections …

Using Data And Evidence To Improve Quality Of Life For Patients With Alzheimer’S Disease, Ying Wang 2023 Bentley University

Using Data And Evidence To Improve Quality Of Life For Patients With Alzheimer’S Disease, Ying Wang

2023

As an irreversible, progressive brain disorder, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) imposes a severe burden upon patients and their caregivers, as well as the healthcare system. Of the ten leading causes of death in the United States, Alzheimer’s disease is the only one without a pharmacological intervention that has been proven to cure or delay the onset of the disease. Aging is the primary risk factor contributing to Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly. With an aging population that continues to grow, the challenges for the healthcare system surrounding AD become more and more serious. My dissertation aims to contribute to a better …

A Short Introduction To Marine Parasitology: Marine Parasites Of Economic And Medical Importance, Klaus Rohde, Robin M. Overstreet 2023 University of New England

A Short Introduction To Marine Parasitology: Marine Parasites Of Economic And Medical Importance, Klaus Rohde, Robin M. Overstreet

Concepts in Animal Parasitology Textbook

Introduction

Parasitism, in this chapter, is defined as “a close association of two organisms, in which one—the parasite—depends on the other—the host—deriving some benefit from it. The benefit is often food” (Rohde, 2005b). Many bacteria, viruses, and fungi are parasitic but usually not studied by parasitologists sensu stricto; they are the domain of microbiologists. Parasites as defined here do not always harm their host; the border between so-called genuine parasites and other symbionts such as commensals is often blurred, and investigators who work on disease aspects tend to emphasis the pathogenic aspects and may not consider non-pathogenic species as truly …

Please see supplemental content for full abstract.

Short QT syndrome (SQTS) is a rare inherited arrhythmogenic disorder characterized by abnormally short QT interval on electrocardiogram (ECG) secondary to a cardiac channelopathy in the absence of structural heart disease.3 Defective function of the potassium-calcium ion channels in SQTS patients facilitates an increased risk of ventricular and atrial arrhythmias, which can lead to symptoms such as syncope or cardiac arrest.2 In this report, we present a 24-year-old male with a past medical history SQTS with prior cardiac arrest and ventricular fibrillation, status post ICD placement and cardiac sympathectomy, who presented with increased …

Persistent Challenges: Pulmonary Hypertension In Aortic Coarctation Despite Surgical Valve Replacement, Adam Devine, Jacklyn Garcia 2023 HCA Healthcare

Persistent Challenges: Pulmonary Hypertension In Aortic Coarctation Despite Surgical Valve Replacement, Adam Devine, Jacklyn Garcia

East Florida Research Day 2023

Introduction: Aortic coarctation has an incidence of 0.04% and is typically amendable either through a surgical or interventional approach. Unfortunately, patients that have undergone repair of the coarctation are at risk of systemic hypertension which suggests a more diffuse vasculopathy. The arteriopathy can also affect the pulmonary vasculature leading to pulmonary hypertension (PH). The development of PH is a poor prognostic factor. Patients with a history of coarctation repairs have more significant afterload measurements which stiffen their left ventricle and decrease compliance and diastolic function. Adults with Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) are at increased risk of premature cardiovascular death …

A Case Of Transient Left Bundle Branch Block, Taylor Craig, Vincent Grekoski, Kashan Mahmood, Laura Tortora

East Florida Research Day 2023

Please see supplemental content for full abstract with references.

Episodic bundle branch blocks are a phenomenon associated with many clinical conditions seen in the emergency department. Intermittent BBBs by definition show both normal conduction and BBB within a single electrocardiographic tracing, where a transient BBB is described as a conduction defect that which then returns to normal. The most common cause of both transient and episodic BBB is rate related however there are many causes.1 Acute LBBB should lead to suspicion of acute coronary syndrome until proven otherwise, however other many other precipitating causes can factor into the overall clinical …

Sudden Onset Ams, Focal Weakness, Fever And Aphasia Due To Intracranial Subdural Empyema In Left Temporo-Parietal Lobe, Lily Hyunjung Lim, Menachem M. Nagar, Pallavi Aneja

East Florida Research Day 2023

Intracranial subdural empyema (ISE) is a rare infection of brain, which occurs when pus is collectively located in the space between dura and arachnoid matter. In the past, its mortality was nearly 100%, if it was not treated appropriately within 24-48 hours. Thanks to improvement of diagnostic modalities and treatment, its mortality has dramatically decreased. Though, it can still cause a devastating consequence if it is not managed in a timely manner. The common etiology of ISE is different depending on the age group. In younger patients, it occurs frequently as a complication of infection in neighboring structures like sinusitis …
