Laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) expressing two proteins of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (‘Bollgard II’ expressing Cry1Ac + Cry2Ab, Monsanto Company, St. Louis, MO) against economically important lepidopteran pests in Mississippi. Results from leaf assays conducted in the laboratory indicate that Bollgard II cotton caused significantly higher mortality and growth inhibition of Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), Heliothis virescens (F.), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), S. exigua (Hubner), Pseudoplusia includes (Walker), and Estigmene acrea (Drury) than Cry1Ac onlyand non-Bt cotton. In greenhouse studies, Bollgard II cotton provided significantly enhanced protection against common defoliating …

Agromyzidae (Diptera) is a family with many species of economic importance on agricultural plants. However, many species are attacked by hymenopteran parasitoids which are known to be habitat rather than species specific. In the Afrotropical region, information about agromyzid and parasitoid diversity in different habitats is scattered in literature. Our aim was to assemble this dispersed information and discuss future needs of biological control efforts against invasive agromyzids in the Afrotropics. From published information, 581 agromyzid records comprising 302 species from 20 genera were recorded from 48 plant families. Parasitoids (90 records) were associated only with 20 agromyzid species belonging …

The effect of fungal infection by Metarhizium anisopliae on feeding and oviposition of adult Liriomyza huidobrensis was examined on three host plants, faba bean (Vicia faba), French bean (Phaseolus vuklgaris) and snow pea (Pisum sativum) in the laboratory. Flies were contaminated with dry conidia and allowed to feed and oviposit on the different host plants. Mortality in L. huidobrensis varied between 14% and 20% in the controls and between 77% and 100% in fungal treatments 120h post-infection for the three host plants. L. huidobrensis made more punctures (47.3-52.6cm-2) in the control than in the fungal treatments (23.1-26.9cm-2) for the three …

Napier stunt phytoplasma (16SrXI and 16SrIII) in eastern Africa is a serious threat to the expansion of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) farming in the region, where it is widely cultivated as fodder in zero grazing livestock systems. The grass has high potential for bio-fuel production, and has been adopted by farmers as a countermeasure to cereal stem borer Lepidoptera, since it attracts and traps the insect. Diagnosis of stunt phytoplasma have been largely by nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) targeting the 16S rRNA gene. However, the method is laborious, costly and technically demanding. This investigation has developed a simpler but …

Entomology Faculty Patents
A method is provided for producing an artificial infection in a Culicidae (mosquito) species. The mosquitoes include species within the subfamilies Culicinae and Anophelinae, and the species include Aedes albopictus, Aedes aegypti and Aedes polynesiensis infected with a Wolbachia infection. The infection may be a strain of Wolbachia which does not normally or naturally infect the selected mosquito species. The artificially infected Aedes mosquito can be introduced into a mosquito population to control the reproduction capability of the population by introducing an incompatible Wolbachia infection. The present method can be used as a novel means to limit mosquito-borne pathogens and …

Biosecurity published reports
Biosecurity is the protection of the economy, environment and human health from the negative impacts of pests, weeds and diseases, including the management of invasive species if they become established (definition adopted by AusBIOSEC).
This requires steps to prevent the entry of harmful organisms, as well as the timely and efficient management of them if they do enter.
Biosecurity threats range from catastrophic diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease, which causes rapid and widespread animal deaths, to more subtle and slower spreading problems such as invasive weeds, mussels that foul vessel hulls and fungus-induced dieback disease of trees. These …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Bacillus Thuringiensis Resistance In The Sugarcane Borer, Yunlong Yang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis, is a major target pest of transgenic corn expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins in many areas of the U.S. mid-southern region. A Cry1Ab-resistant (Cry1Ab-RR) strain of D. saccharalis has been developed from a single two-parent family-line. To examine the molecular mechanisms of the Cry1Ab resistance in this insect strain, cDNAs of five types of potential candidate genes related to Bt resistance were sequenced using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and 5’ rapid amplification of cDNA end (5’ RACE). The Bt resistance candidate genes examined included three trypsins (DsTRYs), three chymotrypsins (DsCHYs), three aminopeptidases N …

A Taxonomic Revision Of The New World Hypoponera Santschi, 1938 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), Shawn Thomas Dash
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The New World taxa of the pantropic ant genus Hypoponera (Ponerinae: Ponerini) is revised for the first time. The 55 previously recognized taxa have been evaluated using morphological and, when possible, ecological and biogeographical data to resolve taxon validity and species limits. Currently I recognize 42 species of Hypoponera , a number of which are new. I propose the following taxonomic outline: Hypoponera agilis (Borgmeier), Hypoponera aliena (F. Smith), Hypoponera antoniensis (Forel) stat. nov., Hypoponera apateae sp. nov., Hypoponera capilosa sp. nov., Hypoponera clinei sp. nov., Hypoponera clavatula (Emery) [= fiebrigi (Forel) syn. nov., = neglecta (Santschi) syn. nov.], Hypoponera …

Characterization Of Wolbachia And Its Interaction In Host Mosquitoes, Eunho Suh
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Wolbachia are maternally inherited, obligate, intracellular bacteria inducing a form of sterility known as cytoplasmic incompatibility. Wolbachia based strategies have been proposed for the control of disease vectors. One example is to use a population replacement strategy to drive into natural population a novel Wolbachia that modifies the age structure of a vector population, reducing disease transmission.
In this research, the effects of a life-shortening stain of Wolbachia (popcorn Wolbachia) are transferred into the mosquitoes Aedes albopictus (Chapter Two and Three) and A. aegypti (Chapter Four and Five). In Chapter Two, the Wolbachia symbiosis significantly reduced fecundity and …
