The paper presents an approach to investigate and monitor the air pollution caused by the palm oil mill. A concept of dealing with the problem from its causes is used where the sources of pollution from the stack gases were examined. The main causes were from the combustion of shell fibre and of the palm oil. However, in the boiler itself, several parameters like steam load and pressure, fuel capacity and temperature also contribute to the pollution. The electrochemical properties of electrode copper in carbon monoxide-saturated phosphate buffered solution were investigated. The electrochemistry of copper surface was sufficiently changed after the supporting electrolyte solution was saturated with CO. The hydrogen evolution region was depressed and shifted cathodically due to the adsorption process of CO on the copper surface in a linear or terminally bonded manner, Cu-CO . The oxidation and the reduction peaks of copper were significantly changed with two couple of redox peaks. Nata de coco, the cellulose produced by Acetobacter aceti with coconut water as substrate, was used as starting material in the synthesis of carboxymethylcellulose after treatment with NaOH and monochloroacetic acid. The product, referred to as carboxymethyl-“nata” (CMN), had a degree of substitution of 0.76, a higher value than those previously reported. This was used in the immobilization of invertase via ionic interaction and adsorptive forces, which produced a viscous colloidal suspension. Agar was incorporated to facilitate pellet formation. Interactions between the agar and the CMN-invertase may have resulted from ionic interactions as well as H-bonding. The immobilized enzyme retained …

Hydroxyl-terminated liquid natural rubber (HTNR) was prepared by the photo-Fenton reaction, which was carried out in solution in the presence of H2O2/Fe(II) combined with UV irradiation. The HTNR obtained was characterized by GPC, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT-NMR spectroscopy as well as by chemical methods. A probable mechanism leading to the formation of HTNR was discussed based on the analytical data.

Research has been widely made on the potential use of herbal plants as effective agents for mosquito vector control. However, only a few studies have been carried out to investigate the potential insecticidal activity of mangrove plants against these dengue vectors. This study was carried out to examine the comparative toxicity of two mangrove plants, Tinospora tuberculata and Lumnitzera racemosa against the Aedes aegypti larvae. NR as a natural polymer has biodegradable characteristics and their existence was examined using CO2 evolution methods. The CO2 molecule produced by micro-organism metabolisms in the degradation system was quantified using a conventional acidimetric method. An aerobic system was determined as most suitable condition to be examined under this method. The presence of O2 in the system would help micro-organisms to destabilize the natural polymer. The material of LATZ, HA film and NR gloves showed significant weight loss and were able to produce CO2 evolution curves after 45 days in the biodegradation system compared to synthetic polyisoprene films. The present study sought to determine the effectiveness of newly developed low calorie chocolate using modified fat through enzymatic interesterification process as cocoa butter substitute of male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 35) compared to cocoa butter as control. Body weight gains did not differ significantly (p>0.05) in all the test groups fed with chocolates which were using different types of fats. Triacylglycerol and cholesterol test showed no significant difference (p>0.05) for all treatment samples. in this study, a pancreatic lipase hydrolysis was performed to determine the fatty acid composition of the sn-2 position of the structure lipids.

Hydroxyl-terminated liquid natural rubbers (HTNRs), prepared by the Photo-Fenton reaction, were used to modify bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether-based epoxy (DGEBA). A chemical link between HTNRs and the epoxy resin was promoted employing toluene diisocyanate. The reactions between elastomers and epoxy resin were followed by FTIR. The mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated and the microstructure was investigated using scanning electronic microscopy. The results showed that the impact resistance of HTNR-modified DGEBA was superior to that of the pure epoxy resin. This study investigated health-related components of physical fitness consisting of morphological fitness (body fat % or BF %; Body Mass Index or BMI; and waist circumference or WC), metabolic fitness (blood glucose, lipid profiles and haemoglobin) and aerobic capacity (VO2max). This crosssectional study involved 324 undergraduates recruited voluntarily by systematic random sampling from a public university in the city Shah Alam, Selangor Malaysia. The respondents’ aerobic capacity was measured by field fitness tests and anthropometric measurements using standard protocols. Chitosan membranes crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) were prepared through a solution method, where the dry homogeneous chitosan membranes were immersed into the reaction solutions containing 1.25 x 10-3 wt. % of glutaraldehyde (GA). The extent of the crosslinking was controlled by varying the crosslinking time from 1 to 5 minutes. The prepared crosslinked membranes were used for pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol-water mixtures. The influence of feed composition on the separation characteristics has been investigated. The 2-minute-crosslinked-membrane yields the highest water concentrations in the permeate with moderate flux at 50 wt. % of isopropanol in the feed solution. The overall pervaporation …

Catalytic activity measurement were carried out on catalysts formulated from ZSM-5 zeolite separately loaded with transition metals (Cu, Co, Ni, Fe) for the removal of NOx in simulated diesel exhaust conditions. Various factors were investigated to compare the performance of these catalysts including catalyst preparation method, Si/Al ratio of the parent zeolite support, and durability in the exhaust stream containing water vapor or SO2. In many experimental conditions except in the presence of water vapor or SO2, Cu-ZSM5 remained the most active catalyst with 100% NOX conversion at around 350°C. A near wall improvement of the k-ε model of turbulence is proposed and evaluated. The present model takes into account the asymptotic behavior of turbulent scales near wall region and for free turbulence region. The Kolmogorov turbulent time scale is introduced as a lower limit. The model is used for prediction of turbulent boundary layer flows. Predictions compared with experimental data of several flow cases, with encouraging results.

This paper proposes a new design procedure of robust power system stabilizers (PSS) using H∞ control via normalized coprime factorization (NCF) approach. The design procedure of the proposed PSS is systematically described. Moreover, the selection method of the weighting function in H∞ control design is explained in a simple manner. The performance and robustness of the proposed PSS are investigated in comparison with the conventional PSS by examining the case of a single machine connected to an infinite bus (SMIB) system. The simulation results are illustrated to ensure the effectiveness of the proposed PSS.

The infection on Crocidolomia binotalis Zeller by the entomopathogenic fungi Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Wise) Brown and Smith, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill, and Metarhizium anisopliae var. majus (Metsch.) Sorokin was studied histopathologically using electron microscopy. Conidia which landed on the cuticle germinated within four to six hours. In the case of B. basiana, shortly after landing, an appresorium was formed that attached itself fast onto the cuticle at the point of fungal entry. The infected larva then entered the moribund state 12 to 24 hours after inoculation. Death of the larva followed 24 to 48 hours later. By then the body cavity …

In this study, heating was used to lower the viscosity of CPO to an acceptable level. 60°C was found to be the optimum heating temperature for CPO to ensure smooth flow in the fuel system, but heating further up to 100°C did not improve the engine performance. A comparison between CPO and diesel in terms of engine performance, combustion characteristics and emission showed that the brake specific fuel consumprion (bsfc) for CPO was 13% higher at 400 kPa brake mean effective pressure (bmep), and the highest bmep achieved was 13.5% lower.
