The theme “parler la terre” presents an opportunity to reconsider Québec’s romans de la terre—farm novels from the turn of the Nineteenth Century into the Twentieth that are often considered to be the inaugural works of the province’s literary canon. Variously known as the “roman du territoire” or the “roman paysan”, this genre, with its idealized depictions of colonization and rural life, helped articulate what literary historian Dorothee Scholl would call the mythe du terroir—or in her own words, “the mythologizing of the soil as the site of French-Canadian national identity (103).” At the height of their popularity, these …

Whether humanities humanize or not has always been a question that gathered both its proponents and opponents. Between those who confirm the statement and those who adamantly repudiate it, history has provided instances that simultaneously bear out both positions. Rather than attempting to prove or to deny the humanizing aspect of language and literature, this article looks at the matter from a different angle. Instead of the either-or argument, I propose the how as a bedrock of understanding the way humanities can humanize. In the wake of Lev Tolstoi’s appraisals of his work, Guy de Maupassant was embraced by Russian twentieth-century authors who admired his mastery of the short story. The Soviet writer Isaak Babel’ and the émigré writer Ivan Bunin reference stories and other texts by Maupassant in their stories ‘Guy de Maupassant’ and ‘Bernard’. To these authors, Maupassant constitutes a means of expressing their own outlook on the craft of literature. Mediated by the act of translation from French into Russian, Maupassant’s writing enables the Russian authors to articulate distinct identities regarding their national literature: as Soviet and émigré.

In Cannibales, the Maghrebi Francophone author Mahi Binebine revisits the encounter between the so-called “cannibals” and the European colonizer in the context of illegal immigration where bodies become commodities exchangeable for social improvements creating a different form of cannibalism. It is no longer the usual dichotomy between the civilized and the savage that is at work but rather a “civilized” European imperialist who feeds himself on a migrant’s flesh. This article argues that this representation works as a “colonial fragment” from the past but contextualized in today’s globalization. Out of Home: Social Class in Women’s Writing 1950 – 2016 employs an intersectional feminist and critical race theory methodology to examine social class in relation to gendered and racial subjugations in the work of selected French and francophone women authors across diverse regions. This dissertation features Annie Ernaux’s texts in the introduction, and then the colonial societies of French Indonesia and Algeria as depicted by narrators in the position of colonizers in the first two chapters. In the last two chapters, post-colonial or settler societies of Guadeloupian and Québécois texts are shown as depicted by colonized or marginalized narrators. …

Although Hervé Guibert’s poignant account of his life as an AIDS patient in his 1990 novel with autobiographical elements To the Friend Who Did Not Save My Life (original French title: À l’ami qui n’a pas sauvé ma vie ) earned him staggering critical and commercial success in his native France, the novel’s highly personal depiction of the AIDS crisis did not please French AIDS crisis activists, who criticized that it favored the author’s individual experiences with AIDS rather than documenting the sociopolitical processes that led to its development as a public health crisis disproportionately affecting sex and gender minorities …

This honors thesis focuses on moments in Réjean Ducharme’s L’Avalée des avalés, L’Hiver de force et Va savoir that are indicative of historical and social questions in Quebec. These novels span a 30 year period of critical developments for Quebec. This analysis, consequently, examines the relationship between Ducharme’s universe and the world in which he lived. It argues that Ducharme’s texts indirectly respond to social questions and discourses, and moreover, that they elaborate a new vision for Quebec and its people.

One of the most interesting and controversial episodes in the history of the Négritude literary and philosophical movement came when two white, French authors prefaced the texts of two of the movement’s most significant authors. Jean-Paul Sartre’s “Orphée noir” is one of these texts in question, and it served as the preface for Léopold Sédar Senghor’s Anthologie de le nouvelle poésie nègre et malgache de langue française. In one sense, one might characterize Sartre as a friend to the Négritude movement, exposing it to the francophone mainstream and thereby helping it gain traction in Western academia. The project examines how the theories of simultaneity and intersectionality are useful in analyzing the lived experiences of the authors and their subjects. Specifically, this dissertation analyzes how French comic artist Catel and American comics artist Sabrina Jones use the medium of comics to recount their autobiographical stories within and alongside their biographical stories of Benoîte Groult and Margaret Sanger, respectively.

Slavery is commonly characterized by its exceptional violence. La Terreur insidieuse reveals how the physically brutal domination associated with slavery was transformed and reconfigured into a form of benevolence in the novel, Ourika, by Claire de Duras. It has generally been accepted by critics, such as Joan DeJean, Françoise Massardier-Kenney, and Adeline Koh that le Chevalier de B “saved Ourika from the terrible fate of slavery” (Massardier-Kenney 191). However, I argue that Ourika was not rescued from captivity, rather she experiences a benign form of domination, cruelty shrouded as love, which works to render her docile.

After studying the narrative figures at work in Maryse Condé's novels Traversée de la Mangrove (1989) and La vie sans fards (2012), our article questions the obvious valorization of stories and of storytelling shown as ambiguous in the textual space, because they are shown as indefinite, polysemic and uncertain. In the textual universe, the ambiguous narrative is especially sought after because it is updatable, by the enunciator as much as by the instance addressed. We suggest that this characteristic of the ambiguous and renewable story and of storytelling is also performed in Maryse Condé' works. In our view, this corresponds …

Maryse Condé's plays reveal both a scriptural and thematic dynamism. This movement manifests a commitment that renews itself through the dramatization of varied sociopolitical current events. The first plays of the Guadeloupean showcase slavery, colonization and Independence. The problematic of the future of Black peoples flowing from them resounds differently in her recent works. Maryse Condé complexifies it indeed and updates it constantly. This makes her an unconventional author, for her writing takes roots in negritude, partakes in post-negritude and proceeds equally from a dramaturgy of uprootedness.

The birth of the Negro Renaissance movement in Harlem (USA), at the beginning of the 1920s, had a remarkable impact on the destiny of the black peoples of Africa, especially in their fight for independence. Having experienced slavery and segregation, the AfroAmerican intellectuals fought continuously in the quest for dignity and freedom. In so doing, their actions and ideas inspired their African counterparts to devise ways and means in their anticolonial fight. This article focuses on Maryse Condé's depiction of medicine and science in her 1986 novel Mai, Tituba, sorcière. It argues that Tituba's critique of modern western medicine, as well as her definition of witchcraft as a healing art, resonate with some topical feminist issues around the time of its publication. Condé's rewriting of the Salem witchtrials emphasizes indeed the epistemological, as well as metaphysical, conflict between the female Caribbean healer and the male doctor whose diagnoses contribute to Tituba's condemnation. As Tituba's confidence in her power and knowledge grows, she also impersonates the danger of an arrogant science, forgoing Man …
