The article is part of the work on media changes induced by digital technologies. He postulates that the offbeat editorial approaches of African pure players are part of an objective of legitimization and that the methods of digital writing integrate economic logics. The analysis of generic journalistic genres (flash, surveys, interviews), offbeat genres (satire, rapped newspaper) and digital genres (fact-checking , data journalism) shows that the fact of alternating formats results from an objective of legitimation, of a competitive game but also of capturing the audience. This article examines the theoretical and practical interconnectedness that crosses fear, media and governing practices. It uses examples from African countries, especially Cameroon, to investigate the ways in which the media are instrumentalized to draw on fear of the Other in general and of opposition leaders in particular in order to support authoritarian regimes. Not only does it focus on the structural changes that lead to a more subtle media control in spite of an apparent liberalization, but it also further describes the discursive devices used to generate and perpetuate fear.

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article uses semi-directive interviews of a dozen media actors in Burkina Faso to examine the transformations of print journalism in the digital age. It reveals that digital technology does not fundamentally change the structure of the field. It rather keeps it in a sort of “in-between” journalism where traditional media routines combine with an appropriation of innovative practices both in the production of information and in its dissemination. That takes place in spite of relative contained economic crisis that makes this hybrid model possible.

Several radio stations on the African continent have been using or experimenting in recent years with the WhatsApp mobile application to gather and disseminate information. Knowing that voice exchange functionalities without the costs associated with conventional telephony are among those preferred by WhatsApp users in Africa, this study analyzes these uses of WhatsApp in relation to changes in the production and dissemination of radio content. The study is an illustration of the hybridization of the media system and shows that “traditional” mobile telephony is still popular with listeners in their on-air interventions.

Fact-checking has become an increasingly important practice, especially with the birth of the internet and social media. In Tunisia, the context of the 2019 presidential and legislative elections saw the birth of the Tunisia Check News platform managed by the Independent High Authority for Audiovisual Communication, with the collaboration of the public media. In this article, we present the context of the emergence of this platform within the community of Tunisian journalists. Operatic Mysticisms: Mountains, Deserts, Waterscapes examines the ways we encounter environments as readers/viewers of operas, literature, film, and sound recordings, and how each medium requires different detail-gathering techniques. A VR staging of Anonin Artaud’s 1925 surrealist play, Jet of Blood. The project experiments with virtual reality as a means to reimagine performance and frame the player, the audience, as actor. Ideas from Artaud’s philosophy such as the Theatre of Cruelty are incorporated along with spatial storytelling and game design. The project also seeks to expand accessibility to deaf and hard of hearing audiences through use of particle and text effects to visually express audio and sound.

The “gypsy” figure has been popular in popular culture for hundreds of years – certainly since the 1600s. The figure can embody wanderlust, difference, bold sexuality, freedom, danger, and criminality. In 19th-century France, the figure’s trendiness was apparent in literature. Writers such as Victor Hugo, George Sand, Charles Nodier, and Prosper Mérimée profited from using these figures in writing. This essay identifies an early modern aesthetic that mobilizes the mundane to make a point about the world or the grandiose. Through a close reading of the poetry in the travelogues of the 17th-century Ottoman Damascene scholar ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Nābulusī (d. 1143/1731), this essay identifies, theorizes, and historicizes early modern Arabic circumstantial verse—what the 19th-century French poet Stéphane Mallarmé calls vers de circonstance. By drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of the “chronotope,” this essay shows how the poetry in Nābulusī’s travelogues fits within, and sometimes advances, their linear narrative. The emphasis placed on the questioning of identity in Québécois society since the Quiet Revolution of the mid-twentieth century continues to this day. Whereas this search for a specifically Québécois identity was originally cast in terms of an Anglophone/Francophone divide, the influx of migrants from around the world to the province since the 1970s has rendered such a simplistic, binary discourse impossible. Using both literary and historical analysis, I will examine contrasting depictions of adultery and fidelity within the lais written by 12th-century poet Marie de France. A lai is a type of narrative poem, ranging in length from 118 to 1184 lines. Many of Marie de France’s lais follow the literary trope known as courtly love; however, the reader is encouraged to sympathize with different characters depending on the lai.
