I had begun to re-read Giraudoux for pleasure, remembering that when I was first introduced to his works in class, I had been impressed by the quality of the heroines he presented. Upon second reading of his theatre, I was struck by the fact that his heroines did not serve in a complementary role to the hero, as so often is the case, but were presented as entities of their own. El jardín de Falerina, the producto of a joint effort by Frarncisco de Rojas Zorrilla, Antonio Coello, and Pedro Calderón de la Barca, represents a type of play that a high degree of popularity during the seventeenth century, the comedia de espectáculo y fantasia, derived, in part, from the romances of chivalry, and partly from the Italian epic poems, Orlando Furioso, by Lodovico Ariosto, and Orlando Innamorato, by Mateo Maria Boiardo.

Dated c. 1629, the comedia was privately performed on January 13, 1636 by the company of Tomás Fernández before Phillip IV and his court. There is no indication that …

This essay is based on the premise that there exists a general orderly pattern of innermost values constantly present throughout time and events.

The atomic world had the same architectural structure as the Universe, but the molecular interactions form the different substances which have properties characteristic of their own. For this study, all twenty novels of Les Rougon-Macquart were examined, although they have not all been dealt with in detail here because many of them do not focus on the working-class.

Eduardo Barrios experimented at various stages in his career with the diary form as a basis of his fictions. This narrative frame, utilizing the language of speech, provided him with a form within which he could explore the aspects of human experience and personality that most interested him. The theme of jealousy, which had occurred in earlier works, comes to be the central theme of the novel Los hombres del hombre and, through the inherent intimacy of the diary form, generates the self-scrutiny of the protagonist. The death of Honoré de Balzac in 1850 left a void in the production of masterpieces of the French novel. During the next decade, the lack of a dominant literary school, with precise rules, afforded to a great variety of authors a period of experimentation toward the establishment of a new direction for the novel.

The cooperative creation of Jules and Edmond de Goncourt emerged from this indecisive period. This study, which grew out of an interest in the recurrent theme of multiple personality in the prose of Miguel de Unamuno, first attempts to define multiple personality in the scientific fields of psychology and psychiatry, subsequently examines depictions of multiple personality in world literature, and finally studies in depth the manifestations of the phenomenon in selected works of Unamuno. Multiple personality in psychology and psychiatry is defined beginning with an examination of the behavioristic, mechanistic-adjustive, and holistic-dynamic approaches to personality theory. Attention is then given to the contributions of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Alfred Adler to personality theory. …

The purpose of this thesis is to attempt to group under certain classifications the various types of violence that appear in Zola’s Rougon-Macquart series. For this study all twenty novels of Les Rougon-Macquart, publsihed between 1870-1893, were examined. Violence was not peculiar to any one segment of Second Empire society. It occurred within all classes: the workers, the bourgeoisie, the fishermen, the peasants, and the aristocracy. No study of the Second Empire would be complete without including this aspect of its society.
