Il existe deux versions de ce texte dans le manuscrit original. Seule la première a été reprise pour la transcription. Marguerite Durand y fait une analyse détaillée et commentée de cette pièce féministe dont les personnages -avocate, écrivaine, femme médecin, journaliste – représentent les différentes figures de l’émancipation féminine. La pièce obtint un grand succès en 1913.

Le premier texte, qui date de 1907, année de la fondation par Marguerite Durand de son Office du travail féminin, est consacré au travail des ouvrières de la Compagnie générale d’électricité d’Ivry-sur-Seine, et illustre bien les problématiques chères à la journaliste : remise en cause des lois prétendument protectrices, égalité des salaires, etc.

Suite au manque de visibilité des émancipatrices françaises lors du Congrès international de Londres, Jane Misme publie un article dans Le Figaro pour mettre en valeur les féministes françaises présentes au Congrès qu’elle décrit comme « une poussée de forces éparses, efforts personnels ou œuvres collectives », ce qui explique qu’elles n’aient pas participé en un groupe homogène et remarqué par la presse. Jane Misme offre ainsi les portraits de quelques féministes engagées aux convictions très différentes : Jeanne Schmahl, Mme Vincent, Mlle Maugeret, Mme Maria Pognon, Mlle Sarah Monod, Mme Marguerite Durand.
