De telles épithètes décrivent bien cet écrivain de la premiere moitié du dix-huitième siècle, auteur d'une trentaine de pièces et de plusieurs romans, récits et essais. The purpose of this thesis is to attempt to group under certain classifications some of the most interested and typical of the many female characters that appear in Zola’s Rougon-Macquart series.

For this study thirteen novels published between 1871-1893 and including all the major works of Les Rougon-Macquart series have been chosen. In background and choice of character they include the great city, the village and the farm, the aristocracy, the bourgeoisie and the peasant. In this way it is hoped to present some of the most striking and unusual women who illustrate this great panorama of the Second Empire.

The Hippolyte of Mathieu Bidar has nos been reprinted since the original edition of 1675, nor has there been a modern critical edition. The desire to do a critical edition of this tragedy was prompted by the prevalence of the theme of Phaedra and Hippolytus, which has been presented repeatedly on the French stage, and because of the editor’s interest in the role that the Greek tradition played in the French classicalism of the seventeenth century. Copies of Bidar’s Hippolyte are rare, since only three are known to be extant. The manuscript used is a copy of the original edition, …

This study undertakes an examination of the doctors and illnesses in Marcel Proust’s life and of the doctors and illnesses in A La Recherche du Temps perdu. The first chapter reviews Prout’s relationship with doctors, especially with his father, who was a practicing physician. Illness, in addition to being an inconvenience, was for Proust a source of many important privileges, upon which he never ceased to draw. In this respect, the question is raised to what degree Proust’s illnesses were genuine. The doctors that appear in A La Recherche du Temps perdu comprise the next topic of discussion. An effort …
