On March 15, 2007, 44 different Francophone authors signed the manifesto Towards a World Literature in French (Simon trs., 2010), following the publication of their anthology of essays published under the same title (Pour une littérature-monde en français, LeBris et Rouaud dir., 2007). The manifesto claims the end of the division between French literature and Francophone literature—being the division between French literature by authors born in France and by authors not born in France, but uses the French language due to various reasons (primarily colonialism and education). The French pronoun « on » presents a unique political case study. According to the French Academy, the pronoun, though limited to the subject position of a sentence, has potential usage to refer to any person or group of people. In everyday usage, the pronoun simply replace the French 'we' equivalent (nous). However, on does not limit itself to just the aforementioned use—instead, it can (and has been) used to replace any personal pronouns (I-je, you-tu, you-vous, il-he/it, elle-she/it, ils/elles–they [gendered accordingly]), and even certain undefined/indefinite ones (like someone, anyone, one, etc.). Abstract

There exist four different English translations for Jules Verne's Sans dessus dessous (1889). The first, by an anonymous translator, was published with the title Barbicane and Company in the British periodical The Boy’s Own Paper from October 1889 to September 1890. It was then published as a book by Sampson Low in December 1890 with the revised title The Purchase of the North Pole. The first American edition of this novel was also published in 1890 in New York by J.S. Ogilvie. It featured a different but also anonymous translation and a title that attempted to be more …

This article offers a detailed comparison of Michel Verne’s 1889 short story “In the Year 2889” and Jules Verne’s 1891 recycled version of the same story, now called « La Journée d’un journaliste américain en 2890 » [The Day of an American Journalist in 2890]. The sixty-seventh novella in Marguerite de Navarre’s Heptaméron, the story of an unnamed woman cast off, with her traitorous husband, from Jean-François de La Rocque de Roberval’s colonizing expedition in 1542, has been called the oldest surviving literary text situated in what is now Canada. This article argues that Marguerite de Navarre seized upon this early modern Atlantic fait divers as an opportunity to propose expanded roles for women (in service to the King, in marriage, and in the Church), roles that could be worked out in the New World and brought back to the Old.

Abstract

Three different English translations exist for Jules Verne's Le Château des Carpathes (1892). The first, by an anonymous translator, was published in London by Sampson Low in 1893 and carried the title The Castle of the Carpathians. An abridged and altered version of this same translation later reappeared in 1963 in the “Fitzroy Edition” published in London by Arco; it was retitled Carpathian Castle and was edited by I.O. Evans. In 2010 a new English translation of this novel was published in Brooklyn, New York by Melville House; it featured a significantly revised title, The Castle in Transylvania …

This article discusses how Verne mythologizes and poeticizes his fictional machines. More than just a means for solving problems and/or for providing access to exotic geographical locales, Verne’s technology is portrayed as being intrinsically poetic. Bridging the worlds of the industrial and the artistic, Verne’s machines constitute a new kind of objet d’art. Anthropomorphized to make them seem less coldly mechanical, these devices take on a life of their own and exist in a richly symbiotic relationship with their creators. Such machines transport the readers of Verne’s Voyages extraordinaires beyond the mimetic, serving both as a means to build verisimilitude …
