This work explores the contradictions contained in the French ideals of democracy and their application to blacks in Africa and the French Caribbean. From the philosophical eruptions of French democratic ideals during the 18th century through the flux and reflux between Republican aspirations and monarchy during the 19th century that followed the proclamation of the Rights of Man of 1789 and the subsequent enshrinement of the Republic, France’s concomitant dehumanization of Blacks through the practice of slavery and colonialism has been a matter of hypocrisy. An aspect of colonialism that is often overlooked is linguistic colonialism - the systematic suppression of the indigenous language in favor of the colonial language. Through laws and official policies, colonial powers impose their language, culture and way of life, often resulting in the suppression of indigenous culture. In the case of South America and North Africa, the colonial powers may have left decades and even centuries ago - the 1820s and the 1950s and 60s, respectively - but the effects of their presence persist still in the languages spoken today. French treatment of slaves in Saint-Domingue at the end of the eighteenth century constituted one of the worst human rights abuses in history. French farmers brought hundreds of thousands of slaves from Africa to the wealthy Caribbean island. They courageously endured the misery of slavery until they found the path to liberty in 1804, the culmination of major slave revolts that had begun in 1791. Francophone feminism is a long process, interspersed with obstacles, which began with the French Revolution of 1789, but it is mostly during the 20th and 21st century that it has become universal. Its development has always collided with religion. Indeed, all monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) relegate women to a secondary position by explicitly recognizing the man as head of the household. This thesis concentrates on the use of Joan of Arc by various political groups during the period of 1870-1914, which marks the period of La Belle Époque. Nineteenthcentury France witnessed an acute anti-clerical campaign led by the Third Republic, which saw the French Church as a threat to the progress of its modernist ideas. Behind this apparent glorification of the knight, however, the author criticizes the individualistic excesses and deviations of chivalry and courtly love.

In addition to presenting the recipes found on the table of nobles and the bourgeoisie, these manuscripts illuminate medieval traditions and practices that transcend the frameworks of religious, political and social status. This work focuses on The Song of Roland, a twelfth-century French poem that recounts the exploits of Charlemagne’s armies during the battle of Roncesvalles in 778. Within the discussion we analyze how, by depicting a precocious national sentiment and forging the tale of a dominant royal power, Roland foretells a movement toward the vernacular historiography of thirteenth-century France.

Written in French, this thesis examines literary censorship in France from the sixteenth through the nineteenth century. Specifically, the thesis centers on the tangible manifestations of censorship imposed on authors and literary works during this time period. Across four case studies, the tangibility—that is, an effect of censorship that can be observed, quantified, or otherwise measured—is determined through exploration of specific examples of censorship.

This work focuses on two periods of French history marked by the great musical creativity — the Middle Ages (more specifically, from the eleventh to thirteenth centuries) and the Belle Époque (i.e. the end of the nineteenth and the early twentieth century). The choice of these two periods is motivated by the fact that the French were profoundly interested by the Middle Ages in the nineteenth century. In preparation of his 2007 presidential campaign, Nicolas Sarkozy made two important speeches, one in Bamako (Mali) and the other in Cotonou (Benin), in which he made controversial comments that called into question the historical relations between France and its former colonies (Glaser and Smith, Sarko 30-31). Well-known for his outspokenness, lack of modesty and tact, Sarkozy did not miss the opportunity to irritate African public opinion and media. Consequently, seduction —as stimulation of love and pleasure- has been discussed often; however, its psychological motivations (other than pleasure), and its consequences have not been sufficiently studied, particularly with regard to the works of the French author Guy de Maupassant. This work examines the link between environmental degradation and cash crops in sub-Saharan Africa by comparing colonial and post-colonial agricultural practice in Kenya, and the Central African Republic (CAR). It argues that there is a historical link between the agricultural policies instituted by the colonial powers and the subsequent environmental damage. Due to the fact that their agricultural choices centered on the production of tea and coffee, the British tended to engage in land management policies that eventually led to substantial environmental degradation in Kenya. This master’s thesis examines and analyzes how gender and race, as represented in literature during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, impact the development of the female character. Race specifically affects the woman’s perception of her own self as a foreigner, and this self-perception relates to the development of her character. This essay examines Elizabeth Inchbald’s treatment of French Revolutionary women and relationship to European drama in order to appreciate the implications of tragic writing for British women playwrights. Focusing on Inchbald’s connections to French culture and English theater in late 1792 and early 1793 elucidates the self‐censoring and generic conventions of her only tragedy, The Massacre. Events in France like the September Massacres unsettled Burkean notions of femininity and raised the possibility of female violence. This mixing of traditional gender characteristics resembles discourse about Inchbald’s dramas as neither tragic, comic, nor tragicomic. The genre of tragic farce describes Inchbald’s revisions …
