My project goal was to translate from French to English significant chapters of a study on gender-based violence (GBV) in Senegal documented by Dr. Fatou Diop Sall. Dr Sall is the head coordinator of GESTES, a Senegalese research group focused on gender equality. A previous group of BYU students and ORCA recipients translated sections of the document that focused on domestic violence, and published the translation with the WomanStats Project, which is the largest statistical database regarding the status of women in the world (Hudson, 2015). The chapters I translated deal with GBV in different spheres, specifically educational spaces (schools, …

A Voice For Women: Translation Of Domestic Violence Research In Senegal, Taylor Madsen, Daryl Lee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In the fall of 2010, I spent three months working with Senegalese children both in schools and in daaras. While I taught English and administered basic first aid, I met some of the most incredible people who became my friends. Through their friendships, I gained an inside perspective into the homes, schools, and work places of those friends. In many ways, I felt very enriched by those experiences. However, I sensed occasionally undertones of sexual discrimination that saddened and frustrated me. Upon my return to BYU, Daryl Lee informed me that Fatou Diop, a professor at L’Université de Gaston Berger(St. …

The Birth Of The Abolitionist Movement In 19th-Century Romania, Under The Influence Of French Revolutionary Discourse, Mihai Scobotovici, Dr. Anca Sprenger
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Fragmented into multiple vassal principalities, Romanians had no country of their own until the 20th century. In the 19th century, French revolutionary ideas catalyzed Romanians’ aspirations for political unity and independence, producing the Revolution of 1848 in the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. Unfortunately, the revolution’s nationalist characteristic has long overshadowed another significant revolutionary goal, namely the abolition of slavery. My study aimed to shed light on Romanian abolitionism by understanding to what extent it was a direct echo of French revolutionary discourse. Thanks to its diaspora of young intellectuals educated and living in France, 19th-century …
Sharing Domestic Violence Research From Senegal With A Global Audience, Charlotte Coleman, Daryl Lee
Sharing Domestic Violence Research From Senegal With A Global Audience, Charlotte Coleman, Daryl Lee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The United States Department of Justice defines domestic violence as, “a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner,” and goes on to say that it affects “people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.” Those affected include but are not limited to, “family members, friends, co-workers, other witnesses and the community at large1.” The purpose of our project was to translate a 2013 study entitled Gender-based violence in Senegal: Prevention as an alternative to the perils of justice and security. It was originally …

The goal of this project was to make an academic study on violence against women in Senegal accessible to a non-French speaking audience. The study was conducted by a university research group on gender issues (GESTES) at the Université Gaston Berger, Saint Louis, Senegal. I worked as part of a team of three translators, rendering it from French into English. GESTES (in English: “Gender and Society Research and Study Group”) is coordinated by Dr. Fatou Diop Sall, a professor at the Université Gaston Berger. Dr Sall’s group study on violence done to women, published in a limited number of copies …

Gestes French-English Translation: Senegalese Women’S Property Rights Research, Charlotte Coleman, Dr. Daryl Lee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The recently released a book called Sex and World Peace addresses the way treatment of women and women’s political security vitally affects all levels of security and social health in society. The book states, “It is time to put the situation of women in the nations of the world as one of the foremost issues facing the international community today.” This translation of the research done on Senegalese women’s property rights for the non-French speaking audience contributes to accomplishing that aspiration in order to inspire further worldwide rectifying action.

With the belief that we could make the world better by improving the quality of life for women, our team of three student translators and one expert mentor undertook the challenge to translate and publish the results of two years of gender studies research conducted in Senegal. Although the research was incredibly localized to a generally overlooked country, the patterns existing within Senegal reflect well those seen in many other underdeveloped countries. Thus, we hoped to provide increased knowledge for important decision-makers in the political, academic, and economic sector.

Discovering And Documenting The Treasures Of Siena Siena Walks, Matthew Hatch, Cinzia Donatelli Noble
Journal of Undergraduate Research
We researched and prepared a travel itinerary (booklet) mainly for students who study abroad and fulfill academic internships to Siena, Italy, and it will serve tourists traveling through BYU travel services. This booklet is still being finalized, but it is in the process of being published. Siena is a diverse and unique city because it is divided into competing districts. The competition, which started more than 400 years ago, fostered an environment where the competing districts always tried to outdo their municipal others. Consequentially, the architecture, arts, music, festivals, etc. in each district are superb. My task was to research …

A Topographical Analysis Of Sixteenth Century Lyon As A Platform For Female Authors, Kristen Brown, Dr. Robert J. Hudson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I would like to begin by thanking the Office of Research & Creative Activities for the incredible opportunity I had to pursue in-‐depth research on a topic that I found exciting and pertinent to my studies at BYU. This grant gave me the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor, and to expand my academic experience during my last year as an undergraduate. Thanks to the funding, I was able to complete my honors thesis, which now is available for the public to view in the Harold B. Lee Library (call number XX(5369221.1).

Summary Of Research On The Narcissus Myth And Its Variant In Turn- Of-The-Century French Literature, Stephen B. Vaisey, Dr. Scott M. Sprenger
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The goal of my research was to identify the origin of a deviation from the classic Ovidian myth of Narcissus that Professor Sprenger noticed in the Traité du Narcisse of Andre Gide. Gide’s Narcissus dies by drowning while trying to embrace his own image in the river, while Ovid’s traditional account has Narcissus die by the side of water and turn into a flower. In addition to searching out the origins of this variant, I also made it my goal to discover the reasons for its appearance or reappearance in Gide’s work.
Employment And Education Surveys With The African Members Of The Lds Church In Paris, Rachel Newton, Dr. Michael Bush
Employment And Education Surveys With The African Members Of The Lds Church In Paris, Rachel Newton, Dr. Michael Bush
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As the world becomes more and more international, residents of third-world countries are immigrating en masse to more developed countries, where they see a promise of a better life — a higher standard of living and acceptance into the world community, from which they feel excluded in their own countries. In France, a large majority of these immigrants are African; the French colonized twenty-one present countries on the African continent and taught the natives their language and many of their customs, so France seems the natural place for these former colonies to look to as their “land of opportunity.” This …

French Utopian Socialists Coming To America: The Transformation Of Etienne Cabet’S Icarian Colony In Nauvoo, John Mccorquindale, Dr. Daryl Lee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
While many of the definitively American utopian groups have received a good deal of curious attention in the past century, the Icarian colonies are relatively unknown. Maybe it is because of their less accessible French background, or because their iconoclastic leader Etienne Cabet (who once garnered 95, 000 votes in the French presidential elections), died in total obscurity, that this mysterious community has disappeared almost entirely from the American consciousness and social tapestry. Whatever the reason, a unique cultural collision that provides insight into the effects of location on beliefs and practices is often overlooked, by both historians and sociologists …

Learning Through Service: Research On Employment And Education With The Lds Institute In Paris, Brendon K. Barton, Dr. Michael Bush
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Recent interactions between BYU faculty and leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Paris, including the stake presidencies and the Institute, have uncovered several areas of concern for French members of the Church. Among these concerns is that of employment and education for young adult members. In line with President Bateman’s vision of Brigham Young University, in its mission “to take the full spectrum of light across the world,” I researched these concerns through administering surveys, personal research, and interviewing members in Paris (1). With the help of Rachel Newton, I was able to …

Analysis Of Transitional Effects Of World War Ii On French Military And Civilians, Mark Ellis, Dr. Marc Olivier
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Second World War has captured the attention of every generation. As historians try to recount exactly what happened during this major turning point in western civilization, the value of primary narratives has become apparent. The voices that experienced World War II have much to say that can not be found in text books, and their generation is quickly disappearing.

Does Unification Of A Language Mean Unification Of A Nation? A Look At Education Under An Official Language, Meredith Kearsley, Dr. Michael Bush
Journal of Undergraduate Research
It has long been asserted that language is an integral and inseparable part of culture, and therefore identity. As such, language plays a powerful role in the political, educational, business, and leisure affairs of a nation. Language can aid in unification and it can also cause fragmentation. An example of a nation that faces the challenges that stem from a diverse linguistic background is the West African country of Senegal. As a nation, Senegal made the decision to declare French the official language of government, business, and education, while maintaining the six primary native languages as national languages. My research …

Sites Of Memory: The Destruction Of Public Buildings During The Paris Commune Of 1871, Julie C. Nay, Dr. Daryle Lee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In March 1871, in response to the brutal Prussian siege of the city, a humiliating peace treaty with the Germans, and an attempt by the national government to deprive Paris of her cannons, the Central Committee of the National Guard declared Paris independent of the national government and installed itself in the Hôtel de Ville. The Commune de Paris was born. For seventy-two days the Commune held sway over Paris, occupying important public buildings. During the final week of the Commune, called the “Bloody Week” of 21-28 May, many of these buildings were destroyed in the struggle between the Communards …

Dincolo De Cenzura: Romanian Poetry Under Communism, Naomi Frandsen, Dr. Anca Mitroi Sprenger
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In 1971, Nicolae Ceausescu, Romania’s secretary-general of the Communist party, ended almost a decade of relative freedom of expression by issuing the July Theses. Similar to the cultural revolutions initiated in China and North Korea, the July Theses changed the landscape of the literary world for nearly 20 years. Books were removed from libraries and stores, young writers were only allowed to publish in anthologies compiled from the winners of governmentadministered “contests,” organizations such as the Writers’ Union and other literary circles were threatened or dismantled, Romanian intellectuals were isolated from the rest of academic Europe, and propagandistic literature filled …
The Voice Of Giovanni Verga In English Translation, Joel Washburn, Cinzia Noble
The Voice Of Giovanni Verga In English Translation, Joel Washburn, Cinzia Noble
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The main theme and plot in Cavalleria Rusticana, Jeli, La Lupa, and Rosso Malpelo can both be identified in the English translations that were analyzed; however, the cultural and religious aspects, together with the nuances in meaning seem to have all been affected in at least some way depending on the accuracy of the translation. Due to the lack of space in presenting my findings, I am writing about one of Verga’s stories—Cavalleria Rusticana.

Resignation In Giovanni Verga’S I Malavoglia, Lacie Parker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of my research is to present a clear understanding of the view of life presented in Giovanni Verga’s novel, I Malavoglia. I chose to study this author because I had been exposed to his short stories in my Italian courses and had been intrigued by Verga’s strong desire to present the world as realistically as he saw it. My mentor recommended the novel to me because it is the first in a series Verga proposed to write that would explore the lives of those that struggle against their own fate and fail tragically. The main question that arose …

Shaping Public Space: Examining The Musée D’Orsay And Modern Louvre, Heather Jacques Wood, Dr. Daryl Lee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
For this project, I wrote an honors thesis examining how museum space—understood as a form of public space—has been shaped by the forces of politics, culture, and public space theories. Two museums in particular, the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée du Louvre, served as case studies and as sources for comparison and contrast. My examination focused on the time from 1980 to present, as these years reflect a significant era of birth and change for both museums. As an additional contrast, I examined the impact of the same shaping forces listed above—politics, culture, and public space theories—on a museum yet …
The Flesh And The Word: The Political And Theological Implications Of The Bibles Moralisées, Anna C. Siebach, Dr. Jesse Hurlbut
The Flesh And The Word: The Political And Theological Implications Of The Bibles Moralisées, Anna C. Siebach, Dr. Jesse Hurlbut
Journal of Undergraduate Research
At the beginning of the thirteenth century, around 1220-30, Blanche of Castille commissioned a Bible the likes of which had never before been produced. This bible, now known as Vienna 2554, consisted of four verses per page, each one linked with an exegetical gloss of the biblical text. Down the center of the page ran two columns of medallions, each one representing the text—whether biblical verse or gloss—placed next to it. With this manuscript began the royal tradition of the Bibles moralisées, a group of seven existing manuscripts, all based on the same theological and practical design.

Figuring The Text Of Salvation: Text And Image In Guillaume De Digulleville’S Pèlerinage De L’Âme, Anna S. Larsen, Dr. Jesse Hurlbut
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Between the years of 1355 and 1358, Guillaume de Digulleville, a Cistercian monk from Châlis, wrote Le pèlerinage de l’âme, the second poem in a trilogy of allegorical pilgrimages. This poem, along with its predecessor Le pèlerinage de la vie humaine and its successor Le pèlerinage de Jhesu Christ proved to be one of the most popular literary works of the 14th and 15th centuries. Seventy-five known manuscripts exist which contain one or more poems from the trilogy, demonstrating that they circulated through England, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and France. The trilogy was translated into English, Castilian, German, Italian, Dutch and …

Gifts In The Burgundian Court Analyzing Financial Records From The Fifteenth Century, Liel Boyce, Dr. Jesse Hurlbut
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Duke of Burgundy was a major broker of art, culture, civilization and power in Western Europe in the fifteenth century. The administration of his wealth and all his expenditures was centralized in a single office called the “Chambre des Comptes.” These annual records span nearly the entire century, and, in most cases, at least one of the copies from each year survives today. In an earlier project under a former MEG grant, Professor Hurlbut and a small team of students photographed these historical documents from the departmental archives in Lille, France. However, because of the archaic, stylized lettering in …

Caragiale: An Experience In 20th Century Romanian Cinema, Michael Wilson, Dr. Anca Sprenger
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The “new wave of Romanian Cinema,” as the recent success of films by a handful of Romanian directors has been named, has made quite a splash in the pool of International Cinema. At the Cannes International Film Festival, the most prestigious film festival in the world, Romanian films have been taking the competition by surprise. In the last 4 years, Romanian directors have taken home seven prestigious awards, including two Palme d’Or, the equivalent of the grand prize given at Cannes. A.O. Scott, a film critic for the New York Times, puts it this way:

This grant has enabled me to embark upon an exciting project that will improve the tools available in the field of French Language acquisition, a video disc textbook. This project contains three main objectives: 1) set up a bilingual database of the images necessary to compile a “little c” culture textbook [i.e. the small, day to day activities that set apart daily life in France from other cultures], 2) obtain the actual images, 3) work with a publishing company and submit it for publication.
Balzac And A Christian Narrative Model: A Message For Modern France, Morgan Dennis, Dr. Scott Sprenger
Balzac And A Christian Narrative Model: A Message For Modern France, Morgan Dennis, Dr. Scott Sprenger
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Honoré de Balzac was one of the most prolific French authors in the 19th century, and scholars around the world publish numerous articles and books about his enormous collection of novels (known as La Comédie Humaine) every year. Despite the fact that religious symbols, references, and images abound through Balzac’s fiction and non-fiction writings, the religious dimension of his novels has largely been ignored because of the secular state of much of modern academics today. When I learned this in Dr. Scott Sprenger’s class during the winter semester of 2008 as we read several of Balzac’s novels, I decided to …

Jeanine Meerapfel And Her Films – An Interview, Jonathan Smith, Dr. Daryl Lee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Jeanine Meerapfel has been a professional filmmaker for 30 years and is an important, though often overlooked, voice in German and Argentine cinema. Meerapfel, born in Argentina to German-Jewish parents who fled Germany during World War II, has worked in Germany, Argentina, and Greece, and has directed both fiction and documentary films. Since her first feature film, Malou [1981], she has tackled issues of immigration, identity and how one reconciles the past, with each subsequent film adding to the discussion of those issues. Jeanine Meerapfel’s work is fascinatingly complex and often defies rudimentary forms of categorization, proving far more complicated …

The purpose of this project was to obtain materials for a photo database to be used in French language instruction. This was accomplished by traveling to France and taking a myriad of pictures. I was in France from April 12 to May 8, 1996. My sister traveled with me and was my aide. We bought Eurorail Passes for the trains, and made it a backpacking excursion. I feel that we made significant contributions to the project in terms of volume of photographs, however, I was surprised at some of the difficulties that I encountered. I hadn’t foreseen some of the …

Teaching French Literacy In West Africa As Part Of A Byu Study Abroad Program, Charles Thomas Sones, Dr. Chantel P. Thompson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Before arriving in Africa, our contact had arranged for us to work in a village outside of Saint-Louis, Senegal, within walking distance of where we would be studying. We were told that a group of twenty adults and twenty children were already selected who needed literacy skills. Although we were not sure of their specific levels, we were told that most had no literacy skills and many would have no French language skills.
