The Earthly Paradise was a vibrant symbol at the heart of medieval Christian geographies of the cosmos. As humanity’s primal home now lost through the sins of Adam of Eve, the Earthly Paradise figured prominently in Old French tales of lands beyond the mundane world. This study proposes a fresh look at the complex roles played by the Earthly Paradise in three medieval French poems: Marie de France’s The Purgatory of St. Patrick, Benedeit’s Voyage of Saint Brendan the Abbot, and Guillaume de Lorris’s The Romance of the Rose. An exploration of Francophone African literary imaginations and expressions through the lens of Afrofuturism

Generally attributed to the Western imagination, science fiction is a literary genre that has expressed projected technological progress since the Industrial Revolution. However, certain fantastical elements in African literary expressions lend themselves to science fiction interpretations, both utopian and dystopian. When the concept of science is divorced from its Western, rationalist, materialist, positivist underpinnings, science fiction represents a broad imaginative space that supersedes the limits of this world. This resource is a proficiency-framed, communicative, and task-based e-textbook for Intermediate French II.

Because learners at this level primarily communicate in sentence-level responses about routine, everyday situations, the four units of this e-textbook focus on strengthening skills across the three modes of communication—interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational—while deepening intercultural competencies. Unit themes include:

• presenting oneself and exploring bilingual, intersectional identity;
• engaging in written, oral, and mediated exchanges on topics of personal interest
• examining perspectives, products, and practices of francophone cultures and comparing them with one’s own; and
• mapping linguistic and cultural competencies onto students’ future personal and professional goals.

This essay discusses the contrasting attitudes toward ecstatic experience as described in Martin Buber's book Ekstatische Konfessionen (1909). Ingmar Bergman's film Persona (1966), and Jean-Luc Godard's film Weekend (1967). The attitude toward ecstasy depends heavily on the use of language and confidence in language to represent ecstatic experience. Buber, Bergman. and Godard share little, if any, perception on the relation between language, speech, and ecstasy.
