"Un bon vin blanc" (A fine white wine), is a French sentence in which every French nasal vowel that will be discussed in this article: [œ̃ ], [ɔ̃], [ɛ̃], [ɑ̃] is represented. Nasal vowels are « produced by lowering the velum and allowing the air to pass outward through the nose » (Halle, Morris, et Clements 1983). This phenomenon is called nasalization. If students of French as a foreign language are not able to produce such nasal sounds, they will not be able to properly pronounce these French vowels. Reading the said letters informs us much about the pamphleteer’s character and personality as we will discover them much more clearly in Mongo Beti à Yaoundé (2005), a collection of media interventions published during some ten years stay in Cameroon after he returns from his long exile in France.

At the beginning of his writer life, Mongo Beti was confronted conditions of publication in French postcolonial era. Because of the political ideology of decolonization that presided over his creation, Présence Africaine (both Revue and publishing Company) seems to have not taking in account the real meaning of writing in French colonial country, the ambitions of young black African writer in the new era and the representation of African literature for him. The purpose of this text is to address questions surrounding institutionalization of African knowledge. By wondering what remained of him when his mother died and by explicitly asking historians to look towards Akometam, Mongo Beti forces his reader to reconsider the diagnosis of intellectual sterility applied to African societies “without literacy”. He also suggests avenues for epistemological consideration by identifying a vulnerable spot in the transmission of African knowledge which is the inability of the young generation of African intellectuals to embrace the philosophical legacy of their predecessors. Yet his work, inspired by everyday life and anchored in the immediate history of the African continent, is strewn with precise reflections on the future of the Black world. This article examines the ideological aspect of the representation of the rural environment in Mongo Beti’s works. It analyses the presuppositions or implicit ideas that underlie the fictionalization of the countryside in order to elucidate the author’s representation of the peasants. It comes to the conclusion that the idea of a new rurality put forward in Mongo Beti’s writing results from the author’s ambivalent attitude towards the peasants : even though he takes their side against the (post)colonial political and economic powers, he decries their cultural and technical backwardness.

In this article, I show how Juan Gabriel Vásquez’s novel El ruido de las cosas al caer (The Sound of Things Falling, 2011) proposes an articulation of the works of memory and affects that can be ethically relevant within the context of the war on drugs in Colombia. I link this analysis with an interpretation of the novel that discusses the role of literature in debates about systemic violence in the global war on drugs. Re-Presenting The Un-Presentable: Annie Ernaux’S "L’Évènement" And Cristian Mungiu’S "4 Months, 3 Weeks, And Two Days", Victoria Tomasulo

Publications and Research

Situating Annie Ernaux’s L’évènement and Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days in a reproductive justice framework, I argue that both the memoir and the film contribute to working-class historiographies by documenting backstreet abortion in times and places where it was heavily criminalized: 1960s France and Communist Romania. Committed to a working-class aesthetic with roots in neorealism, Ernaux and Mungiu focus singularly on an event once deemed unrepresentable in literature and cinema. This dissertation studies the illustrated satirical periodical Le Rire in its historical context between its debut during the Dreyfus Affair and the conclusion of World War I. Adopting a multivalent approach to the historical study of graphic humor, it argues that Le Rire constitutes a significant corpus of evidence for understanding the political, commercial, social, and cultural novelties of its time, and maintained an ambivalent relationship with the young institutions and functionaries of the French Third Republic. This thesis offers a critical reading of three French narratives: Dalila Kerchouche’s Mon père, ce harki (2003), Colombe Schneck’s Les guerres de mon père (2018), and Martine Storti’s L’arrivée de mon père en France (2008). Both young adult literature and novels of migration frequently deal with the construction of identity, from coming-of-age stories to narratives of intercultural exploration and hybridization. Young adult narratives of migration, then, represent a fascinating intersection of two literary traditions for the exploration of questions of identity. However, young adult literature and its varied subgenres are often overlooked among the broader critical scholarship of migration narratives. Indeed, the genre is often critiqued as too simplistic or pedagogical to truly merit consideration among adult readers and academics. In the medieval era of religious and political tumult that culminated with the Crusades, (mostly) Roman Catholic Western European citizens from all walks of life committed themselves to conquer Jerusalem and wrest control of historically Christian lands from the Muslim polities that claimed the region. The historical Kingdom of France was a major contributor to the Crusades, and as such, the feudal realms established in the Levant in the wake of the First Crusade were dominated by former French crusaders and citizenry. This dissertation is the first to focus on gender roles within the fourteenth-century French epic Lion de Bourges and the first work to feature extensive translations into English of this medieval text.
