“Models of Emulation: Representations of Foreign, Indigenous, and Accented Speech in Early American Literature” explores how American writers used depictions of “nonstandard” English and accented English language speech, traditionally described as “literary dialect,” as a way to negotiate identity, power, and political belonging in the formative years of nation building after the American Revolution. Fixed expression and idioms are part of the translated discourse. They are ready-made constructions that summarize an idea or a concept by using outstanding formulas. Translate these expressions is a big challenge for the translator. Thus, a well done translation does not mean mastering the linguistic skills of both languages, since the text does not contain just linguistic facts. It is also about culture, emotions, connotations, style and the author’s genius. Formulaic language often presents significant issue in translation just as well as finding a fixed expression as equivalent.

This thesis is a literary translation of French author Marion Guillot’s 2018 novel C’est moi. The work tells the story of a journey of self-discovery gone wrong. The unnamed narrator feels as if she and Tristan, her unemployed boyfriend, are slowly drifting apart as they put up with the daily domestic drudgery of their Parisian lives. They don’t really get out anymore and they never see anyone except Tristan’s only friend, Charlin, someone who the narrator doesn’t particularly care for. Is it possible to translate nonsense? If yes, then how?

Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” is a nonsense poem in which many of the words are invented out of the author’s imagination. As a result, readers depend on Carroll to explain the meanings of such words. The first stanza of “Jabberwocky,” chosen since it contains the largest number of nonsense words in the poem, was analyzed and compared to the first stanza of two French translations (“Le Jaseroque” by Frank L. Warrin and “Bredoulocheux” by Henri Parisot). A word-by-word, and to an extent, syllable-by-syllable close reading of the three texts was performed …
