Many critics have discovered striking similarities between Samuel Johnson's Rasselas and Voltaire's Candide. Yet, most have failed to describe the links that exist between the works which indicate that similar forces may have spurred the authors to write so similar tales, one quickly following the other into publication.

Source studies of the two tales indicate that very little, if any, evidence is available to prove that the works were inspired by the same written sources that Johnson and Voltaire may have relied upon. While source studies of the tales do not reveal any shocking information, they do inform the …

France's most prominent philosopher of the second half of the seventeenth century is reputed to be no friend of rhetoric. Bernard Tocanne declares, "C'est chez Malebranche que se mettent en place tous les arguments mis en oeuvre par les adversaires de la rhétorique à la fin du siècle," and Peter France calls him "a philosopher who had no love for rhetoric." The basis of such judgments is the Oratorian's attacks in the Recherche de la vérité (1674) against the use of the imagination and passions in the eloquence of Tertullian, Seneca, and Montaigne. Mme. Marguerite Yourcenar, distinguished French writer and the first woman to be elected to the Academie Francaise in its 346-year history, has generously presented seventeen of her books to the Syracuse University Libraries. Some are early editions of special value, and one, Nouvelles orientales (Gallimard, 1938), is extensively corrected in her own hand. All the books contain a presentation inscription.

Nicolas Malebranche (1638–1715) is perhaps the most important French philosopher between Descartes and the Revolution of 1789. His synthesis of Cartesian elements and Augustinianism in the last quarter of the seventeenth century had great influence on several generations of thinkers before the rationalism he represented was replaced by the new Lockian sensualism. There has been a European revival of interest in Malebranche in the last twenty years, centering around the first critical edition of his complete works, a task headed by the Belgian historian of philosophy André Robinet, and there are signs that American interest is growing as well with …

Near the beginning and end of his Lettres philosophiques (1734), his first major text promoting the principles of enlightenment, Voltaire gave examples of two very different kinds of eloquence. In the third letter on the Quakers, he pictured George Fox converting his jailers with his inspired preaching. In the last letter, he praised the eloquence of Pascal before he attempted a refutation of the Pensées, calling Pascal’s projected apology for Christianity “un livre plein de paralogismes éloquents et de faussetés admirablement déduites.” Each is representative of a brand of eloquence Voltaire found objectionable. In Mexican Literature 1947 is a key date for the novel because of the publication of Al filo del agua, by Agustín Yáñez. With it, the cycle of novels known as “Novelas de la Revolución” ends and a new cycle, “Novelas contemporáneas”, begins. In the In the present study, however, the author considers La vida inútil de Pito Pérez, by José Rubén Romero, published in 1938 as a contemporary novel. Romero’s book and that of Yáñez are examined in this work along with Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo, 1955, and La muerte de Artemio Cruz, 1962, by Carlos Fuentes.

Silvina Bullrich's literary career spans over four decades and covers every genre except theatre. She is considered a national institution in Argentina where her fame rivals that of her former mentor, Jorge Luis Borges. Despite her national renown, Bullrich often has been condemned by critics who base their judgments on non-literary criteria. In the United States, recent doctoral dissertations have considered Bullrich as part of a group of either political or women writers. Emilia Pardo Bazán, a Spanish novelist of the nineteenth century, used her talents to portray women realistically. This dissertation describes her grasp of their psychology and the ways in which she discerns those differences between men and women which are sex-linked and those which are socially determined. Her novels and short stories are analyzed to define her views. The introduction sketches doña Emilia‘s own complex personality; then two antithetical currents of thought concerning women are traced through Spanish literature. This paper is intended to associate several characters who exhibit various degrees of self-knowledge in the following tragedies: La Thébaide Ou Les Frères Ennemis , Alexandre Le Grand, Andromaque, Britannicus, and Bérénice. These plays were written at various stages of Racine 's literary career, and there is in them a reflection of his life and the mood of his creative endeavors.

Also included is an analysis intended to assimilate certain factors which can be used to gauge the presence or lack of self­ knowledge gained only through awareness and a great deal of struggle.

This dissertation examines survival in Goytisolo's two early novels, Juegos de manos (1954) and Duelo en el Paraíso (1955), and two late novels, Señas de identidad (1966) and Reivindicación del Conde don Julián (1970). The approach views survival as the novelist's central theme and also as a signficant factor in the technique of his artistic medium. The novel's struggle for survival as a contemporary art form--through change and growth in technique--is integrated with contemporary man's fight for personal survival. In the Histoire de Jenni (1775), his last major conte, Voltaire returns to a pattern similar in many ways to the one he had used in his first important tale, Micromégas. In both, as Vivienne Mylne has pointed out, two discussion scenes—the first near the beginning of the tale and a second more substantial one—are set in a narrative frame involving a voyage. Critics have generally attributed this return to a structure relying heavily on debate to convey his message to Voltaire’s increasing use of the philosophical dialogue in his later years. This dissertation analyzes trends in philosophy and the novel on the question of evil during the period 1661-1715. The problem was treated on three levels: cosmic, personal and social evil. Three questions dominate: Why does evil exist? From whence does it come? How can it be alleviated or eliminated? By the study of similarities and differences between the works of a philosopher and a novel, the dissertation shows how abstract ideas were rendered into concrete situations and how serious concepts were made palatable to a wide-spread audience through the sugar-coating of fiction. The genera I approach incorporates the theories of Claude Levi-Strauss, Ro land Barth es, Jean Piaget, Jean Rousset, and Leo Spitzer. The primary aim of this study was to investigate three types of parent communication--encouragement, praise, and discouragement--with regard to feelings elicited and perceived helpfulness, as reported by fifth- and sixth-grade subjects grouped according to high, medium, or low locus of control. Subjects for the study were 37 male and 47 female volunteers. Bialer•s Children•s Locus of Control Scale was used to classify males and females into a high (internal), medium (middle range), or low (external) group. It was assumed that the employment of controversial topics would reverse the conditions described as obtaining with the employment of cultural truisms. McGuire's first study on the inoculation theory was used as a paradigm, and three hypotheses were investigated: Hypothesis One: A supportive treatment will be superior to a refutational treatment in conferring resistance to persuasion. Critics of the rabbi Santob de Carrion's Proverbios morales have often remarked on the work's frequent juxtaposition of contradictory maxims. It has been further said that reversibility of ideas characterizes both its structure and the thinking of its author. Interpretations of the literary traditions from which such structure and thought may have sprung have differed sharply. This study examines Santob's major work in Hebrew, his Debate between the Pen and the Scissors, and demonstrates the close relation that exists between the Semitic literary tradition from which it comes and the Proverbios morales.
