Education And Linguistic Security In The Charter, Denise Réaume, Leslie Green

The authors provide an interpretive framework for minority language education rights as guaranteed in Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. They argue that the purpose of such rights is to protect linguistic security. Attending to that value and to the text of the Charter, they seek to explain he nature and ground of the limitation which confines application of the right to circumstances in which numbers warrant. In doing so, they critically discuss a number of judgments bearing on the content of the right, the relevance of cost in securing the right, and the appropriate judicial …

The Jean Cocteau Collection: How 'Astonishing'?, Paul J. Archambault

The Courier

Between 1963 and 1971, the Syracuse University Library acquired more than two hundred fifty holograph manuscripts by Jean Cocteau. These are now to be found in the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections, where they enhance an already rich assortment of French manuscripts that have been thoroughly listed in a previous article in the Courier. An abridged history of their acquisition might be told here. The story is interesting, for it includes several of those ironical twists that made so much of Cocteau's life seem like a chassé-croisé with Death, choreographed by the artist himself.

This study was designed to determine whether children who, on the basis of their Rorschach Erlebnistypus score, were identified as being introversive or extratensive differed with respect to their approaches to certain novel problem-solving tasks. It was thought that the extratensives would characteristically manipulate the task materials more and make more mistakes than would the introversives, owing to the notion that the introversives internalize more of their manipulations and attempted solutions. Sixty-nine sixth and seventh graders at a university-run laboratory school were administered the Rorschach. From that number fifteen introversive and fifteen extratensive children were identified who were also given …

Prefacing The Heroine's Text, her study of the French and English novel 1722-1782, with an explanation of its binary structure, Nancy Miller explains that in the first section, "The Euphoric Text," the inscription of female destiny is a positive one, ending with the heroine's integration into society; in the second section, "The Dysphoric Text," this inscription is negative, culminating in the heroine's premature death. An unexpected and largely unrecognized strength of the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University lies in French literary manuscripts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Authors' letters, autograph manuscripts and typescripts, and revisions in proof, as well as publishers' records, offer essential biographical, textual, and bibliographic documentation. Even though French literature has not been a primary collecting area, Syracuse University has had the good fortune to acquire individual items and collections of variety and depth. The summary that follows is offered as both an introduction to these collections and an invitation to scholarship.

This article describes "Une Amazone," a work by Alexandre Dumas that now resides in Syracuse University Special Collections. It is known alternatively by the title "Herminie." It is a Romantic tragedy that takes place surrounding the events of a masquerade ball. The author also comments on the foreward and notes that Dumas provided with the manuscript, giving valuable insights into Dumas' character development and creative process.

Language Attrition In French-Speaking Missionaries, Peggy S. Mauerman

Theses and Dissertations

Patterns of language loss were analyzed in twenty-five returned French-speaking missionaries who had spent from one-and-a-half to two years in a French-speaking environment and who had returned to the United States from four months to five years ago. The subjects were given a written vocabulary test and an oral interview to determine their proficiency in the language. The results of this study showed that the patterns or change in particular language forms varied according to each language form. Some categories showed an obvious pattern of loss while some varied from year to year, with no pattern of any kind in …

At a crucial point in the third act of Le Jeu de l'amour et du hasard, Silvia declares that she requires a battle in Dorante between love and reason: "je veux un combat entre I'amour et la raison," a struggle her brother Mario suggests will be to the death.
