The 2008 Chaitén Volcano eruption began on 2 May 2008 with an explosive phase that injected large amounts of tephra into the atmosphere. During the first week of the eruption, volcanic ash clouds were transported for hundreds of kilometres over Argentina by the prevailing westerly winds. Tephra deposition extended to the Atlantic Ocean and severely affected the Argentinean Patagonia. Impacts included air and water quality degradation, disruption of ground transportation systems and cancellation of flights at airports more than 1,500 km apart. Given the worldwide demand for rare earth elements (REEs) in modern electronics, all potential sources of the REEs should be investigated. Coal-combustion fly ash represents a potential source of REEs. Fly ashes, derived from the combustion of coals from Kentucky in the United States and Jungar in China, were examined by wavelength-dispersive spectrometry electron microprobe analysis of epoxy-bound polished pellets. From previous studies, it was known that the REEs did not show any enrichment relative to flue gas temperature at the point of collection or to the particle size, that is, external surface area, of the particles. Weinvestigated the mobility of inorganic elements in the ash dump due to chemical interaction of weathered dry disposed ash conditioned with high-saline effluents and ingressed CO2 from atmosphere and percolating rainwater. Drilled ash core samples collected from dry disposed ash dump at a South African coal-burning power station were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses. A modified sequential extraction procedure was selected to determine the mineralogical association of the investigated elements in the 1-year-old drilled ash cores. Research is being conducted on reducing the explosiveness of AN by encapsulating it with the use of coal by-products. The objective of this greenhouse pot study was to determine the effects of class C and F fly ash and flue gas desulfurization-gypsum-encapsulated AN on biomass, grain, and straw yield and nitrogen and metals uptake by wheat. Fly ash is a major by-product of thermal power plants that adversely affects land, water, and air. Its gainful utilization in many areas is being continuously explored. Use of fly ash in opencast coal mine haul road construction is one such option. This article reports detailed laboratory investigations carried out on clinker-stabilized fly ash–mine overburden mixes to evaluate their suitability for subbase of mine haul roads. Composite materials were prepared from fly ash, mine overburden, and clinker at different proportions. This has led to a desire to broaden production from both previously productive locations and to expand production to new sources, possibly including coal-derived fly ash. The burning of low-grade coal produces vast amounts of ash and other solid by-products. In South Africa, coal combustion by-products undergo disposal on land as dry heaps or slurried to dams. In this study, the geochemical partitioning, transport, and mobility of elements in dry disposed ash dumps were investigated using a modified sequential extraction scheme. The chemical and mineralogical compositions of 50 drilled core samples were investigated by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. "The presence of coarse grained sediment can potentially reduce the effectiveness of conventional sampling methods in recovering fluvial sediments. A modification to freeze-core technology was used to collect fine grained sediments for the purpose of characterizing the extent of heavy metal contamination in fluvial deposits that contain significant amounts of coarse-grained material such as cobbles and boulders. This material greatly reduces the effectiveness of conventional sampling methods. This method uses 2.5-cm and 2.9-cm diameter by 30-cm long finned samplers that were mechanically- and hand-driven into the ground. "Wolf Creek Dam was completed in 1952 as a 5,736-foot long and 258-foot high combination embankment-concrete gravity dam. Its storage capacity of 6 million acre feet makes it the ninth largest reservoir in the nation. The dam was built on a heavily karstified limestone foundation and began exhibiting signs of excess foundation seepage in late 1967. This led to extensive corrective work in the 1970s beneath the earthen core of the embankment to reduce underseepage. In 2006 an independent assessment by the Dam Safety Action Classification (DSAC) Peer Review Panel recommended that Wolf Creek Dam exhibited "Urgent and Compelling" foundation …

This research considers discontinuities mapped by Waste Control Specialists LLC to support the site conditions and performance analysis of the Compact Waste Disposal Facility and the Federal Waste Disposal Facility excavations constructed near Andrews, Texas. Discontinuities observed in excavation walls contain a limited number of discontinuities shoevidence of previous fluid movement. While no networks of such discontinuities were observed in the field, the potential for such networks may exist. "A spatial landslide inventory is a fundamental step preparatory to developing an understanding of regional landslide hazards. The techniques honed for this regional landslide mapping study began with compiling a stitched shaded topographic map of the Upper Indus River watershed; using remotely-sensed topographic maps from Russia combined with ASTER DEM 30m resolution data. Efforts to discriminate buried unexploded ordnance from harmless surrounding clutter are often hampered by the uncertainty in the number of buried targets that produce a given detected signal. We present a technique that helps determine that number with no need for data inversion. The procedure is based on the joint diagonalization of a set of multistatic response (MSR) matrices measured at different time gates by a time-domain electromagnetic induction sensor. The effects of future land use and land cover change on the chemical composition of the atmosphere and air quality are largely unknown. To investigate the potential effects associated with future changes in vegetation driven by atmospheric CO 2 concentrations, climate, and anthropogenic land use over the 21st century, we performed a series of model experiments combining a general circulation model with a dynamic global vegetation model and an atmospheric chemical-transport model. Increasing amounts of coal are combusted annually to meet the ever-increasing energy demands. The inevitable by-products include fly ash and saline effluents, which require acceptable disposal. The aim of this article is to compare the effect of hydraulic disposal with dry ash dumping. The results indicate that the former carries more environmental benefits based on the physical, chemical, and mineralogical aspects that were investigated.
