Coral bleaching is the detrimental expulsion of algal symbionts from their cnidarian hosts, and predominantly occurs when corals are exposed to thermal stress. The incidence and severity of bleaching is often spatially heterogeneous within reef-scales (km), and is therefore not predictable using conventional remote sensing products. Here, we systematically assess the relationship between in situ measurements of 20 environmental variables, along with seven remotely sensed SST thermal stress metrics, and 81 observed bleaching events at coral reef locations spanning five major reef regions globally. We find that high-frequency temperature variability (i.e., daily temperature range) was the most influential factor in …

Incidental capture of air‑breathing species in fishing gear is a major source of mortality for many threatened populations. Even when individuals are discarded alive, they may not survive due to direct injury, or due to more cryptic internal physiological injury such as decompression sickness. Post‑release mortality, however, can be difficult to determine. In this pilot study, we deployed survivorship pop‑up archival tags (sPAT) (n = 3) for an air‑breathing species, the olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), one of the first studies to do so. We found that at least two of the three turtles survived after being …

Species distribution models (SDMs) have become key tools for describing and predicting species habitats. In the marine domain, environmental data used in modeling species distributions are often remotely sensed, and as such have limited capacity for interpreting the vertical structure of the water column, or are sampled in situ, offering minimal spatial and temporal coverage. Advances in ocean models have improved our capacity to explore subsurface ocean features, yet there has been limited integration of such features in SDMs. Using output from a data-assimilative configuration of the Regional Ocean Modeling System, we examine the effect of including dynamic subsurface …

Understanding the diet of deep-diving predators can provide essential insight to the trophic structure of the mesopelagic ecosystem. Comprehensive population-level diet estimates are exceptionally difficult to obtain for elusive marine predators due to the logistical challenges involved in observing their feeding behavior and collecting samples for traditional stomach content or fecal analyses. We used quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) to estimate the diet composition of a wide-ranging mesopelagic predator, the northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris), across five years. To implement QFASA, we first compiled a library of prey fatty acid (FA) profiles from the mesopelagic eastern North Pacific. Given …

Polychaetes is one of intertidal animals that face the fluctuations of coastal environment through time. One of important environmental factors to animals is temperature regarding to the fluctuation of temperature in intertidal environment. Human activities could also cause high changes in water temperature by high temperature discharges from urban and industries. Since global warming is still a main issue, an increase of seawater temperature about 3°C could be possible as a prediction. This study aimed to investigate effect of temperature in polychaetes Perinereis quatrefagesi at cellular level, which could be indicated by heat shock response and oxidative stress due to …

Description of the resource partitioning (or niche differentiation) among fish is an essential part of substantial difference in a resources used for coexisting species for reducing competition. Food and reproductive activity are the most important factor concerning the resource partitioning among fishes. Decorated ponyfish (Nuchequula gerreoides) and splendid ponyfish (Eubleekeria splendens) are the two abundantly co-occurring leiognathid’s species in the Pranburi river estuary. The coexistence of these two species may promote resource partitioning. To examine this hypothesis, two important ponyfishes were collected from the Pranburi river estuary in this study. All fish specimens collection were carried out during dry (February …

As climate change progresses, the frequency and duration of upwelling events that bring low pH, low dissolved oxygen (DO) water to nearshore habitats are expected to increase. In addition, long-term global changes in ocean pH and DO are expected to occur within the next few decades to centuries. Locally, there have been documented reductions in near-shore pH along with the expansion of oxygen minimum zones within the California Current System. However, very few studies have investigated the potential interactive effect of these stressors on temperate reef fish. For this thesis, two sets of laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the …

California's shallow rocky reefs provide critical habitat for a diverse assemblage of fishes. Effective management strategies for these species require both accurate stock assessments as well as a spatially explicit understanding of the relationship between fishes and characteristics of their habitat. We used a generalized additive model framework to create spatially predictive maps of the abundance and biomass of two demersal fish species prevalent on northern California reefs: lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus) and kelp greenling (Hexagrammos decagrammus). These models incorporated data from SCUBA-based fish and habitat surveys at depths from 12-26 meters as well as measures of …

Black rockfish (Sebastes melanops), canary rockfish (S. pinniger), and lingcod (Ophidion elongatus) are important species in Northern California’s nearshore recreational and commercial fisheries. These species are associated with nearshore rocky reefs and are among a suite of species intended to benefit from the establishment of the marine protected area (MPA) network along the Northern California Coast in 2012.
Many aspects of the North Coast’s nearshore ecosystem remain poorly studied, including the spatial distribution and habitat associations of nearshore fish species. This study used data collected from Cape Mendocino State Marine Reserve (SMR), Ten Mile …

The southern end of the African continent marks the division between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean where warm, saline waters propagate into the Atlantic Ocean in the form of rings, eddies, and filaments. These warm, saline waters released during the retroflection of the Agulhas Current are referred to as Agulhas leakage. The Agulhas Current is a poleward flowing western boundary current that forms the limb of the winddriven anti-cyclonic circulation of the south Indian Ocean. The current originates south of Madagascar fed by the Mozambique Channel and the East Madagascar Current. Smallscale variations have been identified in Agulhas …

Climate Metric Coherence: Stationarity Of The Relationships Between North Pacific Climate Indices And Ecological Processes In The Gulf Of Alaska, Michael Opiekun
Theses and Dissertations
The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) has been used to characterize the dominant basin-scale climate variability, in the North Pacific. The PDO index has been correlated to Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) population dynamics in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) during the late 1900s, but the stationarity of the statistical relationships between salmon production and the basin-scale index (and between the regional physical processes and the basin-scale index) has not been quantified. A change in the relationship between the PDO and salmon catches has been noted during the late 1980s, motivating further investigation of variability in climate and ecosystem properties during this …

Ocean acidification is well-researched with respect to adult scleractinian corals, however information on whether adults and recruits of the same species respond similarly to this environmental stress is lacking. I investigated the responses to increased pCO2 of recruits of the temperate coral, Oculina arbuscula, whose adults are known to withstand high levels of pCO2 with no depression in calcification (up to 1000 ppm CO2). I addressed the hypothesis that O. arbuscula recruit health is not affected by increased pCO2 by exposing small colonies (5-12mm diameter) to 475, 711, and 1270 ppm CO2 for …

The vertical distribution of copepods in estuaries is known to vary in relation to environmental factors. However, the relationships between environmental conditions (e.g., tides, hydrography) and copepod distributions are not well understood. This project examined connections between environmental parameters and copepod distribution in Mission Bay, San Diego, California. Copepods (adults, juveniles, and nauplii) were collected every two hours over a diel cycle at three sites across the bay. A plankton pump was used to draw ~2 m3 of water from each of two depths - just below the surface and just above the bottom. Copepods were retained in a …

Background: New World vultures (Cathartiformes: Cathartidae) are obligate scavengers comprised of seven species in five genera throughout the Americas. Of these, turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) and black vultures (Coragyps atratus) are the most widespread and, although ecologically similar, have evolved differences in morphology, physiology, and behaviour. Three species of haemosporidians have been reported in New World vultures to date: Haemoproteus catharti, Leucocytozoon toddi and Plasmodium elongatum, although few studies have investigated haemosporidian parasites in this important group of species. In this study, morphological and molecular methods were used to investi- gate the epidemiology and molecular biology of haemosporidian parasites of …

Deepwater tropical fisheries provide an important source of income and protein to Pacific and Indian Ocean coastal communities who are highly dependent on fish for food security. The development of quantitative assessments and management strategies for these deepwater fisheries has been hindered by insufficient biological and fisheries data. We examine the age-specific demography of the pygmy ruby snapper Etelis carbunculus, an important target species in tropical deepwater fisheries, across 90° of longitude and 20° of latitude in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Our results show that growth of E. carbunculus varies significantly between oceans and sexes and across latitudes …
