We report the draft genome sequence of the red harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus. The genome was sequenced using 454 pyrosequencing, and the current assembly and annotation were completed in less than 1 y. Analyses of conserved gene groups (more than 1,200 manually annotated genes to date) suggest a high-quality assembly and annotation comparable to recently sequenced insect genomes using Sanger sequencing. The red harvester ant is a model for studying reproductive division of labor, phenotypic plasticity, and sociogenomics. The Diversity And Distributions Of The Beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera) Of The Northern Leeward Islands, Lesser Antilles (Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Nevis, Saba, St. Barthélemy, St. Eustatius, St. Kitts, And St. Martin-St. Maarten, Stewart B. Peck

This paper summarizes the published information on the beetle fauna of the northern Leeward Islands (Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Nevis, Saba, St. Barthélemy, St. Eustatius, St. Kitts, St. Martin-St. Maarten, and smaller associated islands, excluding Montserrat). These islands are generally smaller, lower, and drier than the remaining Leeward and Windward islands of the Lesser Antilles island arc. The fauna contains 26 families, with 155 genera, and 218 species. The families with the largest number of recorded species are Staphylinidae (36), Cerambycidae (28), Scarabaeidae (25), Tenebrionidae (23), Curculionidae (18), and Carabidae (15). Additions To The Hyperaspis Chevrolat (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) Fauna Of South American, Descriptions Of Nine New Species, And Recognition Of Hyperaspis Pectoralis Crotch As A Valid Species, Robert D. Gordon, F. Guillermo González

Nine new species of Hyperaspis from various South American localities are described, illustrated, and compared with previously described taxa. New taxa are: Hyperaspis luciae, H. corcovado, H. divaricata, H. humboldti, H. mimica, H. praecipua, H. unimaculosa, H. drechseli, and H. esmeraldas. Hyperaspis pectoralis Crotch is recognized as a valid species of Hyperaspis and integrated into the existing classification.

The biogeographic significance of Diplopoda is substantiated by 50 maps documenting indigenous occurrences of the 16 orders, the three Spirostreptida s. l. suborders – Cambalidea, Epinannolenidea, Spirostreptidea – and all higher taxa including Diplopoda itself. A Distributional Checklist Of The Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) Of Florida, John M. Leavengood, Cecilia Waichert, Juanita Rodriguez

The Florida fauna of Pompilidae is investigated and a total of 115 species are recorded. Among them, 30 are new records for the state. The species and subspecies are presented by subfamily and tribe accompanied by county-based distributional accounts for each of the lower taxa.

Resumen. Se investiga la fauna de Pompilidae de Florida, reportándose un total de 115 especies. De estas, 30 especies son nuevos registros para el estado. Se presenta la subfamilia y tribu correspondiente a las especies y subespecies. La distribución en condados se enumera para los taxones de más bajo rango.

The agave snout weevil, Scyphophorus acupunctatus Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Dryophthorinae), is reported from Puerto Rico for the first time. It was collected on feral sisal, Agave sisalana Perrine (Agavaceae), in the Guánica Dry Forest Reserve in the southwestern part of the island.

The small Caribbean island of Navassa (U.S. possession) is unoccupied by humans, but recent surveys have detected a surprising number of endemic (precinctive) invertebrates. A new species of May beetle, Phyllophaga navassa, is here described and compared to the Hispaniolan Phyllophaga fauna.

The large genus Phyllophaga Harris is estimated to contain over 500 species (Morón 1997:229); perhaps the largest genus of New World Scarabaeidae. In the recent revision of the species for the island of Hispaniola (Woodruff and Sanderson 2004), 48 species were treated, of which 22 were described as new. An additional 137 species and two tribes are added to the cerambycid fauna of Bolivia while 12 species are deleted. This brings the total number of species known from Bolivia to 1,561. Comments and statistics regarding the growth of knowledge on the Bolivian Cerambycid fauna and species endemicity are included.

Beetles (Coleoptera: Histeridae And Scarabaeidae) From Previously Unsampled Populations Of Pocket Gopher Burrows In Louisiana, Matthew B. Connior

Pocket gopher burrows (Rodentia: Geomyidae) were sampled from five previously unsampled localities in northern Louisiana to determine the associated faunal composition of Histeridae and Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera). Sampling produced four species of Histeridae and seven species of Scarabaeidae, all of which had been previously reported from Louisiana. The most commonly collected scarab beetle was Cryptoscatomaseter haldemani (Horn) followed by Geomyphilus insolitus (Brown). Onthophilus kirni Ross was the most commonly collected hister beetle.

Specimens of a recently described pterophorid, Adaina ipomoeae Bigot and Etienne, 2009 (Lepidoptera: Pterophoridae), were identified from Grenada, Dominican Republic, and Florida. All are new country records.

Bigot and Etienne (2009) recently published the results of collecting and rearing of Pterophoridae from Guadeloupe Island. Eleven plume moth species were reported from the island, including Adaina ipomoeae Bigot and Etienne, 2009, collected 6 June 2006 and associated with Ipomoea tiliacea (Wild) Choisy and Merremia umbellata (L.) H. Hall [Convolvulaceae]. Gielis (2011) reported the distribution of A. ipomoeae to include Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico as well as Guadeloupe. Label data were …

Notophanus bellicilifer Thomas, n. gen., n. sp., is described and illustrated from Australia. A key is provided to all of the species of the tribe Brontini known to occur in Australia.

Examination of specimens from the Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC) revealed a single specimen in the silvanid subfamily Brontinae from Victoria different from any known Australian genus. Further searching of the collection produced additional specimens from Victoria and South Australia. Interestingly, the first specimen examined possessed hind wings, while all the other specimens lacked hind wings. There appear to be no differences other than the lack of metathoracic wings …

World Catalogue Of Propalticidae, With A Replacement Name For Discogenia Kolbe (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea), Matthew L. Gimmel

An annotated world catalogue and bibliography of the cucujoid family Propalticidae (Coleoptera) is presented. Each taxon is accompanied by a complete taxonomic history, including a full annotated synonymy with original references cited, and current location and status of primary types. The name Slipinskogenia nom. nov. is proposed to replace Discogenia Kolbe, 1897, junior homonym of Discogenia LeConte, 1866, resulting in 11 new combinations. A key is provided for separation of the two genera included in the family. Complete published and previously unpublished distributional data are given.

Many of the arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) show extensive genetic variability and are widely distributed over large geographic areas. Understanding how virus genetic structure varies in space may yield insight into how these pathogens are adapted to and dispersed by different hosts or vectors, the relative importance of mutation, drift, or selection in generating genetic variability, and where and when epidemics or epizootics are most likely to occur. However, because most arboviruses tend to be sampled opportunistically and often cannot be isolated in large numbers at a given locale, surprisingly little is known about their spatial genetic structure on the local …

Imported Fire Ant(Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Mound Distribution Relationships In Connection To The Heterogeneity Of Ten Christmas Tree Farm Landscapes In Mississippi, S. R. Self, T. E. Nebeker

Ten Christmas tree farms were selected as research sites across Mississippi. At each site a 10-percent inventory was established. Plots were chosen randomly, and all imported fire ant (IFA) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Solenopsis spp.) mound positions inside the plot boundaries were captured as global positioning system (GPS) points. Mound points, along with their corresponding volumes (cm3), were recorded and uploaded into ESRI® ArcMap for analysis. Thirteen variables were selected to represent the heterogeneity of these landscapes. Among those variables, the species, height, and diameter of every Christmas tree located inside a plot were recorded, along with average grass height, distance to …
