A Comparison Of Microsatellites And Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms For The Assessment Of Population Structure In The Amblyomma Maculatum Koch, 1844 Species Complex, Henrey A. Deese

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Gulf Coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum Koch, 1844 is widespread throughout North and Central America and is the primary vector for the emerging pathogen Rickettsia parkeri. In the U.S., the population in the Southwest (A. maculatum morphotype III) is morphologically different from the population east of the Rocky Mountains (A. maculatum morphotype II). This research tests the hypothesis that A. maculatum morphotype II and morphotype III represent distinct species through the analysis and comparison of 6 microsatellite loci and suite of 135,221 Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) generated from ddRADseq. Population genetic analysis of both microsatellites and SNPs …

Wildlife trail cameras, or “camera traps”, have become an effective tool in ecological research and conservation management across a variety of ecosystems to monitor a wide range of taxa. Camera trapping allows for extended survey time in traditionally hard-to-survey environments and has greatly increased our ability to detect cryptic species. One question ecologists commonly face is how much sampling effort is required to accurately estimate community composition. Despite the abundant literature that uses camera trapping techniques, few studies have occurred in coastal saltmarsh ecosystems. These ecosystems are being lost at a rapid rate from land conversion, pollution, and other anthropogenic …

Chemical Disinfection In Rural Ecuador, Lachlan Beebe, Chad Tatko, Julie Wildschut 2023 Calvin University

Chemical Disinfection In Rural Ecuador, Lachlan Beebe, Chad Tatko, Julie Wildschut

Summer Research

The Clean Water Institute, in conjunction with Calvin University seeks to address issues with water availability in developing countries, particularly as it relates to quality of the water. The research done this summer was to investigate the potential implementations of improvements for clean water in rural Ecuador. These improvements manifested themselves in two distinct initiatives: The first initiative was to investigate the implementation of a passive chlorinator in a small Ecuadorean community. This involved literature review to decide a chlorinator to pursue, followed by extensive testing to validate the efficacy of the chlorinator under a variety of conditions. The second …

Native Plant Restoration On Calvin’S Campus And An Introduction To The Calvin Biodiversity Project, David Warners, William Hofmann 2023 Calvin University

Native Plant Restoration On Calvin’S Campus And An Introduction To The Calvin Biodiversity Project, David Warners, William Hofmann

Summer Research

Since university campuses serve as important education and public gathering centers for the cities and towns in which they reside, it is critical to maintain pleasing aesthetics that are cost effective while also promoting sustainability and biodiversity enhancement. On Calvin’s campus, many sites, including garden beds, restored woodlots, and even a dune provide these services. Native plants have continually been added to various locations around campus in place of lawn grass, with the goal of benefitting pollinators and birds along with creating natural sponges for stormwater runoff coming from parking lots and building roofs. These spaces also sequester carbon and …

Do Channel Catfish Consume Zebra Mussels?, Casey M. Myers 2023 Bemidji State University

Do Channel Catfish Consume Zebra Mussels?, Casey M. Myers

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus are a generalized opportunistic feeder with a wide range of diet compositions. In the Midwest, zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha have quickly spread, causing large effects on aquatic ecosystems structures and functions. Channel catfish are known to consume native mollusks, however, little research has been done on the potential predation of zebra mussels by channel catfish. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze channel catfish diets to determine if zebra mussels are consumed. The channel catfish were obtained from the Sauk River chain of lakes between the dates of 14 June and 28 July 2023. …

Comparing Insect Biodiversity Between Curb-Cut Rain Gardens And Residential Lawns, Dave Warners, Naomi Dykstra, Julia Klooster

Summer Research

Global insect biodiversity is at a major decline. The drop in population can largely be attributed to a loss of natural habitat through conversion into urban and agricultural land. Insects are important parts of food webs and many play an important role in pollination, control of weeds, control of agricultural pests, and the decomposition of wood and leaves.

Curb Cut Rain Gardens In The Plaster Creek Watershed, Josiah Millen, Cherith Pickett, Brandon Price, Jude Veldboom, Dave Warners

Summer Research

The developed urban life of Grand Rapids, Michigan has flourished in what was once a pure, natural setting. Throughout time, the standardization of impermeable surfaces, the slow takeover of native plants by means of invasive ones, and general increase of pollution has continued onward. This has led to a decrease in the water quality of the Grand Rapids watershed and poses a health concern to the communities immersed in the Plaster Creek Watershed. Plaster Creek Stewards is working to restore the watershed and mitigate further damage focusing on the beneficial impacts of installing curb-cut rain gardens (CCRG).

Analysis Of Lepilemur Edwardsi Seasonal Acoustic Activity, Samantha Henry 2023 University of Central Florida

Analysis Of Lepilemur Edwardsi Seasonal Acoustic Activity, Samantha Henry

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) has historically been used as a noninvasive technique to study biodiversity, activity patterns, distribution, and species dispersal. The use of acoustic data has expanded in ecological research; however, studies focusing on primates are underrepresented, especially for nocturnal species. This study seeks to increase the understanding of acoustic activity in the nocturnal Milne-Edwards' sportive lemur (Lepilemur edwardsi). This species is endangered and endemic to the lowland dry forests in northwest Madagascar. Specifically, this study aims to describe the daily and annual acoustic activity patterns of the L. edwardsi. The PAM survey was conducted using …

It Turned Into A Bioblitz: Urban Data Collection For Building Scientific Literacy And Environmental Connection, Kelly O'Donnell, Lisa Brundage

Publications and Research

In 2013, Macaulay Honors College redesigned its required science curriculum to focus on scientific literacy skills rather than content. Central to this shift was inclusion of a data collection event, a BioBlitz, to provide students with the basis for their own semester-long research projects. Students are teamed with naturalists in an urban green space to find as many species as they can in 24 h and to contribute to a global biodiversity database via the app iNaturalist. We have learned two important lessons: (1) developing an interdisciplinary curriculum with a high degree of experiential learning is more successful when both …

Hunting has been crucial in early human evolution. Some San (Bushmen) of southern Africa still practice their indigenous hunting. The use of poisons is one remarkable aspect of their bow-and-arrow hunting but the sources, taxonomic identifications of species used, and recipes, are not well documented. This study reports on fieldwork to investigate recent indigenous hunting practices of G/ui and G//ana San communities in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR), Botswana. Here we discuss their use of spider poison. The hunters use the contents of the opisthosoma (‘abdomen’) of a spider as sole ingredient of the arrow poison and discard the …
