Influence Of Congruity In Store-Attribute Dimensions And Self-Image On Purchase Intentions In Online Stores Of Multichannel Retailers, Vishag Badrinarayanan, Enrique P. Becerra, Sreedhar Madhavaram Jan 2014

Influence Of Congruity In Store-Attribute Dimensions And Self-Image On Purchase Intentions In Online Stores Of Multichannel Retailers, Vishag Badrinarayanan, Enrique P. Becerra, Sreedhar Madhavaram

Business Faculty Publications

Online stores of multichannel retailers continue to lag pure internet retailers with reference to consumers' shopping intentions and sales. This study develops and tests a framework in which (a) trust and attitude (conceptualized as a second-order construct with hedonic and utilitarian dimensions) influence purchase intentions, (b) congruity between the multichannel retailer's land-based and online stores (conceptualized as a second-order constructs made up of seven dimensions: aesthetic appeal, navigation convenience, transaction convenience, atmosphere, service, price orientation, and security) influences trust in and attitude toward the online store, and (c) congruity between consumers' self-image and perceived image of the online store influences …

Regulatory Focus As A Predictor Of Attitudes Toward Partitioned And Combined Pricing, Kiljae Lee, Jungsil Choi, Yexin J. Li Jan 2014

Regulatory Focus As A Predictor Of Attitudes Toward Partitioned And Combined Pricing, Kiljae Lee, Jungsil Choi, Yexin J. Li

Business Faculty Publications

Partitioned pricing is a widely used pricing strategy, but little is known about the buyer characteristics that influence its effectiveness. The current research contributes to the pricing literature by investigating the impact of regulatory focus on the perceived attractiveness of partitioned and combined pricing. In four studies, we hypothesized and found support for the idea that promotion focused individuals perceive partitioned prices to be more attractive than combined prices, while prevention focused individuals do not differentiate between the two pricing types. Our results also show that regulatory focus influences consumers' information processing style, which in turn leads to important differences …

Relationship Marketing Strategy: An Operant Resource Perspective, Sreedhar Madhavaram, Elad Granot, Vishag Badrinarayanan Jan 2014

Relationship Marketing Strategy: An Operant Resource Perspective, Sreedhar Madhavaram, Elad Granot, Vishag Badrinarayanan

Business Faculty Publications

Marketing's evolution toward a new, service-dominant (S-D) logic requires the focus of marketing to be on the intangible, dynamic, operant resources. Therefore, in this paper, we examine the relationship marketing (RM) strategy from an operant resource perspective that focuses on how operant resources can influence RM-based strategy success. Specifically, we identify network competence, alliance competence, internal market orientation, and customer response capability as operant resources that have been empirically verified to have positive influences on firms. Next, we identify market relating capability and knowledge management capability as operant resources that need further conceptual and empirical investigation. Furthermore, based on our …

The Impact Of Psychological Distance On Moral Behavior, Randi L. Sims, Baiyun Gong Jan 2014

The Impact Of Psychological Distance On Moral Behavior, Randi L. Sims, Baiyun Gong

HCBE Faculty Presentations

Immoral or unethical behavior is often at the center of scandal. It makes headline news and is the basis for considerable academic research and case analysis. Yet, moral behavior as a separate construct from moral intent, has not received the same attention. The purpose of this paper is to consider the importance of psychological distance on moral behavior. Within the context of moral behavior, psychological distance refers to felt or perceived differences between victim, offender, and moral agent. A brief review of related theory is offered as are four propositions tying the constructs of psychological distance, emotional intensity, and values …

The obesity epidemic is a barrier to the participation of adolescents in developmentally normative behaviors associated with mate selection, such as dating. Notably, the obesity stigma has important implications for the socioemotional development of adolescents in the realms of intimacy and peer acceptance, as well as for their future chances of marriage and healthy relationships.

The Impact Of User Involvement On Information System Projects, Bradford Reese Eichhorn Jan 2014

The Impact Of User Involvement On Information System Projects, Bradford Reese Eichhorn

ETD Archive

Information systems (IS) development has been studied from many perspectives. Information systems are being viewed as a service as the economy shifts from being industrial-based to service-based. This shift is motivating the business user to become more involved with the development of the system. The once clear roles of user-as-specifier and IT professional-as-developer are blurring. This research addresses three objectives. First, we survey the actual business users themselves for their perception of activities and satisfaction with the completed system. Second, we analyze the separation of business requirements into two constructs representing the functional and presentation dimensions of these requirements to …

The Motivating Role Of Dissociative Outgroups In Encouraging Positive Consumer Behaviors, Katherine White, Bonnie Simpson, Jennifer Argo Jan 2014

The Motivating Role Of Dissociative Outgroups In Encouraging Positive Consumer Behaviors, Katherine White, Bonnie Simpson, Jennifer Argo

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

Previous research has found that people tend to avoid products or behaviors that are linked to dissociative reference groups. The present research demonstrates conditions under which consumers exhibit similar behaviors to dissociative out-group members in the domain of positive consumption behaviors. In particular, when a consumer learns that a dissociative out-group performs comparatively well on a positive behavior, the consumer is more likely to respond with positive intentions and actions when the setting is public (vs. private). The authors suggest that this occurs because learning of the successful performance of a dissociative out-group under public conditions threatens the consumer’s group …

Is The Very Notion Of “Representation” Relevant For The Regulation Game Of Video Game Developers?, Marie-Josee Legault, Johanna Weststar Jan 2014

Is The Very Notion Of “Representation” Relevant For The Regulation Game Of Video Game Developers?, Marie-Josee Legault, Johanna Weststar

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

Using Kelly’s mobilisation theory (1998) to assess their propensity to collective action, this article examines where videogame developers stand regarding the representation of their interests. These workers are good examples of knowledge work in project-based organisations. If Kelly’s model allows in general for projections of unionisation in a given sector, we find this is not the case here. Rather, our study leads us to observe how much the labour market has changed since the elaboration of Kelly’s model, and how much these workers’ needs differ from the options laid out by traditional unions’ action as presented by Kelly. This group …

Challengers From Within Economic Institutions: A Second-Class Social Movement? A Response To Déjean, Giamporcaro, Gond, Leca And Penalva-Icher's Comment On French Sri, Diane-Laure Arjaliès Jan 2014

Challengers From Within Economic Institutions: A Second-Class Social Movement? A Response To Déjean, Giamporcaro, Gond, Leca And Penalva-Icher's Comment On French Sri, Diane-Laure Arjaliès

Business Publications

In a recent comment made about my paper “A Social Movement Perspective on Finance: How Socially Responsible Invetsment Mattered” (J Bus Ethics 92:57–78, 2010), published in this journal, Déjean, Giamporcaro, Gond, Leca and Penalva-Icher (J Bus Ethics 112: 205-212, 2013) strongly criticize the social movement perspective adopted on French SRI. They both contest the empirical analysis of the movement and the possibility for insiders to trigger institutional change towards sustainability. This answer aims to address the different concerns raised throughout their comment and illuminate the differences between both approaches. It first explains why SRI in France can be considered as …

Expatriate-Deployment Levels And Subsidiary Growth: A Temporal Analysis, Suhaib Riaz, W. Glenn Rowe, Paul W. Beamish Jan 2014

Expatriate-Deployment Levels And Subsidiary Growth: A Temporal Analysis, Suhaib Riaz, W. Glenn Rowe, Paul W. Beamish

Business Publications

We investigated the relationship between expatriate-deployment levels and the growth of international subsidiaries over time. Latent-curve analysis revealed that higher subsidiary growth over the long term was achieved through both (a) a higher proportion of expatriates at subsidiary founding and (b) a slower reduction in the proportion of expatriates over time. These results suggest that the decision to reduce the proportion of expatriates due to cost considerations should be tempered with the potential long-term benefits of expatriates for improving subsidiary growth. Our results point to the importance of two factors that impact subsidiary changes over time: path dependence and dynamic …

Number Two Executives: Bottom-Up Monitoring, Zhichuan (Frank) Li Jan 2014

Number Two Executives: Bottom-Up Monitoring, Zhichuan (Frank) Li

Business Publications

This paper empirically examines whether the number two executive in a firm could possibly mitigate the agency problems by monitoring the CEO from bottom up. While the CEO has always been the focus, little work has been done on the number two executive. This study promotes a comprehensive understanding of these top executives and their roles in the bottom-up monitoring mechanism. The results suggest that (1) the bottom-up monitoring provided by number two executives improves firm value; (2) the effect is greater for firms with weaker corporate governance or CEO incentive alignment; (3) the bottom-up monitoring is more important in …

Decision Support Capabilities Of Enterprise Content Management Systems: An Empirical Investigation, Jaffar A. Alalwan, Manoj A. Thomas, H. Roland Weistroffer Jan 2014

Decision Support Capabilities Of Enterprise Content Management Systems: An Empirical Investigation, Jaffar A. Alalwan, Manoj A. Thomas, H. Roland Weistroffer

Information Systems Publications

Enterprise content management (ECM) systems help organizations cope with the increasing complexity and volume of data and information. Despite the growing popularity of ECM, published literature indicates that organizations primarily use ECM for operational benefits, while the strategic decision making capabilities are rarely considered. Thus, the most significant rewards of ECM implementation may be largely forgone. This study investigates the potential of ECM technology for decision support. A research model is proposed and validated via an empirical investigation. The results show that ECM positively influences problem identification and definition, decision making speed and analysis, decision quality, and decision makers’ satisfaction.

A Distributed Consensus Algorithm For Decision Making In Service-Oriented Internet Of Things, Shancang Li, George Oikonomou, Theo Tryfonas, Thomas M. Chen, Li Da Xu Jan 2014

A Distributed Consensus Algorithm For Decision Making In Service-Oriented Internet Of Things, Shancang Li, George Oikonomou, Theo Tryfonas, Thomas M. Chen, Li Da Xu

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

In a service-oriented Internet of things (IoT) deployment, it is difficult to make consensus decisions for services at different IoT edge nodes where available information might be insufficient or overloaded. Existing statistical methods attempt to resolve the inconsistency, which requires adequate information to make decisions. Distributed consensus decision making (CDM) methods can provide an efficient and reliable means of synthesizing information by using a wider range of information than existing statistical methods. In this paper, we first discuss service composition for the IoT by minimizing the multi-parameter dependent matching value. Subsequently, a cluster-based distributed algorithm is proposed, whereby consensuses are …

Learning In Action: Implementing A Facilitated Learning Programme For Tourism Micro-Firms, Dr. Felicity Kelliher, Dr. Leana Reinl Jan 2014

Learning In Action: Implementing A Facilitated Learning Programme For Tourism Micro-Firms, Dr. Felicity Kelliher, Dr. Leana Reinl

Irish Business Journal

This paper presents findings from research associated with a tourism micro-firm facilitated learning programme, carried out over a four-year period. Considering traditional educational interventions have had limited impact on micro-firm activities; the researchers propose an alternative approach to meeting the learning needs of micro-firms which encompass local and self-developed knowledge and the successful completion of learning cycles. Using a behavioural lens, the researchers’ consider the experiential learning impact of facilitated learning programmes on observed micro-firm owner-managers. Adopting an action learning (AL) approach, the researchers explore the design, development, implementation and impact of this programme and contemplate the observed micro-firms’ focus …

An Exploration Of The Role Of Food Tourism In Sustaining Cultural Authenticity In Ireland, Lisa O'Riordan, Dr. Aisling Ward Jan 2014

An Exploration Of The Role Of Food Tourism In Sustaining Cultural Authenticity In Ireland, Lisa O'Riordan, Dr. Aisling Ward

Irish Business Journal

Authenticity is often a motivating factor for tourists. In many situations what occurs, however, is staged authenticity. Food is one of the few entities left that indicates true cultural authenticity. Food can bridge the gap between tourists and their understanding of and involvement in a place. Native cultures that are struggling to preserve their heritage and ways of life from globalising forces can use food as a defensive mechanism. This paper is part of a wider postgraduate study on food tourism and culture so will focus on the research completed to date, mainly the literature reviewed as well as initial …

What Do Seller Manipulations Of Online Product Reviews Mean To Consumers?, Ling Peng, Geng Cui, Mengzhou Zhuang, Chunyu Li Jan 2014

What Do Seller Manipulations Of Online Product Reviews Mean To Consumers?, Ling Peng, Geng Cui, Mengzhou Zhuang, Chunyu Li

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

There is growing evidence that consumers are influenced by online product reviews when making a variety of purchase decisions. Firms are therefore tempted to monitor and manipulate online product reviews on the company's website or forum to influence consumer perceptions by anonymously posting positive reviews, hiding or deleting unfavorable reviews, or offering rewards to consumers who post favorable reviews. Our review of the literature has revealed a surprising shortage of work directed at the development of an integrative theoretical framework or rigorous empirical studies on the effectiveness and the exact impact of such activities on the payoffs to various parties. …
