To understand better the meanings of work for individuals, we explored work orientation and examined empirically individual attributes of proactive personality, concern for others, concern for self, preference for challenging work, and work enjoyment as related to job, career and calling work orientations. Age, income, and employment security were identified as control variables. Our data derived from an online survey of full-time blue-collar and corporate employees in the auto industry (n = 251). Our study findings suggest preference for challenging work differentiates job, career, and calling orientations. We discuss the implications of our findings and suggest areas for future research.

This article examines the important and controversial topic of criminal background checks in employment. The topic of criminal background checks in employment is indeed an important as well as controversial and difficult one in the world of business today, as this hiring practice addresses core values in society. Yet these values can conflict. One societal value is the belief that if a criminal ex-offender has paid his or her “debt to society’; then opportunities, such as employment, should be made available to such a person, just like everyone else. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of electric lamp renewal systems, an early, successful program to encourage the adoption of new technology, electric lighting. Design/methodology/approach – Much material for the research comes from a variety of archival sources and publications of the early part of the twentieth century. Findings – The free lamp renewal system was brilliant and effective: its high level of customer service and human contact dispelled fear raised by the new energy source, increasing the acceptance and use of electric lighting and thereby electricity. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to identify and describe the impact of the support system on the career development of first generation college graduates.

Research Questions:

--What comprises the first generation college graduates' support system for each generation (i.e. social network, friends, family and colleagues and mentors)?

--What is the relative importance/influence of each support system component in career development for each generation?

Cute has become the favored language of (the predominantly female) popular consumer culture. This paper examines the roots of “cute” and its evolution with reference to its relevance to marketers. We follow the cultural appropriation of Japan’s “Kawaii” by the Western “cute”, and introduce a social, marketing-oriented description and analysis of the concept. We present its socio-cultural, experiential, symbolic, and ideological relevance to consumption in general, and to consumer culture theory in particular. This examination steers clear of scientific generalizations prevalent in consumer behavior research and aims, instead, to illuminate the cultural dimensions of the consumption cycle, and allow a …
