Variational Inequalities For Marketable Pollution Permits With Technological Investment Opportunities: The Case Of Oligopolistic Markets, Anna Nagurney, Kathy Dhanda
Variational Inequalities For Marketable Pollution Permits With Technological Investment Opportunities: The Case Of Oligopolistic Markets, Anna Nagurney, Kathy Dhanda
Kathy K Dhanda
In this paper, we develop a variational inequality framework for the modeling, qualitative analysis, and computation of equilibrium patterns in multiproduct, multipollutant oligopolistic markets with marketable pollution permits along with opportunities for investment in production technology and/or emission-abatement technology. The model deals explicitly with spatial differentiation and also guarantees that the imposed environmental standards are met through the initial allocation of licenses. An algorithm is proposed, with convergence results, to compute the profitmaximized quantities of oligopolistic firms' products and the quantities of emissions, along with the equilibrium allocation of licenses and their prices, as well as the optimal investments in …

Bank of American Fork wishes to facilitate further growth. To achieve this goal, BAF has hired Greg Soter, of Soter Associates Inc., to develop a more aggressive marketing plan. Sorter Associates has asked Stelter Marketeers to discover the community's perception by conducting a comprehensive image study of Bank of American Fork. Three market segments have been the focus of the study; personal account customers, personal account non-customers, and business account customers. The objective has been to determine the perceptions of each market segment. Stelter Marketeers comprised of Jennifer Holladay, Roger Kerr, Phil Upton-Rowley, Miriam Stelter, Dan Weber.

Using Auctions To Divest Generation Assets, Peter Cramton, Lisa J. Cameron, Robert Wilson
Peter Cramton
In most states, ratepayers will compensate utilities for their stranded costs. As a result, these costs must be measured as accurately as possible, in a manner that is easily understood by all concerned parties. We describe the options for measuring stranded costs and argue that a simultaneous ascending auction is the best approach.
Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell
Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell
Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series
The quality and value of an area depend primarily on what is found within its designated boundaries. To determine the value of such areas in terms of boundaries, we have developed a methodology for integrating multi-attribute utility functions with spatial analysis so that desirable, or appropriate, boundaries can be determined on the basis of the goals and objectives for the park. The key to successful evaluation is the development of measures for what decision makers value, rather than merely using what is easily measured. In a detailed example for planning of national parks, the fundamental objectives are conservation and societal …

Technical Default, Auditors' Decisions And Future Financial Distress, Michael S. Wilkins
Technical Default, Auditors' Decisions And Future Financial Distress, Michael S. Wilkins
School of Business Faculty Research
A study was conducted to examine auditors' responses to first-time debt covenant violations and to assess whether these responses can be employed to forecast financial distress. Data were drawn from a sample of 159 companies traded on the NYSE/AMEX or NASDAQ that had initial default dates ranging from 1978 to 1988. The findings reveal that auditors are more likely to need debt reclassification when the violations are not waived by lenders. However, the waiver decision does not seem to significantly affect the auditor's qualification decision. For companies experiencing technical default, the audit option is an important determinant of future financial …

In thinking about the application of computers and the internet technology to problems of association, collaboration and civil society we need to get beyond the current state of mimicking existing social processes and discover new ways to extend and enhance those social processes.

The Role Of Skill Upgrading In Manufacturing Performance, Melissa M. Appleyard
The Role Of Skill Upgrading In Manufacturing Performance, Melissa M. Appleyard
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
This section examines the industry-wide trend of upgrading the skills of production workers in the semiconductor industry. This analysis discusses the industry characteristics driving this trend, the human resource policies that support skill upgrades, and the payoffs associated with such upgrades. To provide a deeper understanding of the process of skill upgrading, two fabs from our sample are analyzed in detail. One fab is located in Japan (pseudonym Jfab) and the other fab is located in the U.S. (pseudonym USfab).
As a central part of their manufacturing strategy, these fabs have emphasized the upskilling of operators particularly for equipment maintenance …
The Effect Of Managers' Clarification Of Business Linkage Of Training On Trainees' Transfer Of Training, Elizabeth J. Benanzer
The Effect Of Managers' Clarification Of Business Linkage Of Training On Trainees' Transfer Of Training, Elizabeth J. Benanzer
Dissertations
This study investigated the hypotheses that if managers were engaged in specific activities aimed at increasing their understanding of the linkage of employee training to business goals, then they would in turn create a more positive transfer environment, resulting in greater transfer of training received by their employees. Some managers of trainees participated in a workshop in which they used an “impact mapping” procedure to clearly explain the relationship between training of their employees and strategic goals of the business; another group of managers did not receive this impact mapping training. Then, all managers’ employees participated in a supervisory training …

The Process Of Internationalization In The Operating Firm, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Derek S. Pugh, Geoff Mallory
The Process Of Internationalization In The Operating Firm, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Derek S. Pugh, Geoff Mallory
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Two factors have been emphasised as influencing the choice of, and subsequent shifts between, modes of foreign market servicing: (1) market-specific knowledge; and (2) the generalised knowledge from operating internationally. The process-oriented literature on internalisation has tended to emphasise the former over the latter. This article maintains that market-specific knowledge is not the only source of information available to a firm. As firms operate in foreign markets they develop, in addition to networks of institutional arrangements, a knowledge of the process of internationalization. Account therefore has to be taken of the general knowledge from operating internationally in understanding the development …
