Comparison As Incentive: Newsvendor Decisions In A Social Context, Buket Avci, Zeina Loutfi, Jurgen Mihm, Elena Belavina, Steffen Keck

Explicit formal mechanisms dominate the discussion about incentives in Operations Management, yet many other mechanisms exist. Social comparison between peers may provide strong implicit incentives for individuals. Social comparison arises naturally in all social settings and may thus be unintended; however, many companies deliberately use it to motivate employees. In this study, we model a social context in which purchasers evaluate their performance relative to their peers; a feeling of inferiority results in a negative contribution to utility, whereas a feeling of superiority results in a positive contribution. We find that social comparison induces characteristic deviations from the newsvendor optimum …

Managerial Agency Costs Of Socialistic Internal Capital Markets: Empirical Evidence From China, Jiwei Wang, Kangtao Ye
Managerial Agency Costs Of Socialistic Internal Capital Markets: Empirical Evidence From China, Jiwei Wang, Kangtao Ye
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This study provides empirical evidence of managerial agency costs in socialistic internal capital markets. Listed Chinese companies are required to disclose the amount of resources that are reallocated to other firms of the parent company, which provides us with a direct measure of the socialistic subsidization of weak member firms by strong member firms within a business group. We hypothesize that in strong member firms, managerial compensation is less sensitive to firm performance because cross-subsidization makes it difficult for group CEOs to hold the managers in strong firms accountable for their own firms' performance, and also increases the noise in …
Hiring And Training Work-Study Students: A Case Study, Laura Manley, Robert P. Holley
Hiring And Training Work-Study Students: A Case Study, Laura Manley, Robert P. Holley
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
This paper describes the implementation of a comprehensive hiring and training program for library work-study students designed to reduce the time spent on individual training. After staff reductions, Marygrove College Library in Detroit, Michigan turned to an underutilized resource--work-study students. Formerly, training these students took so much permanent staff time that the library questioned investing so much effort on a contingent work force. With the cuts, the library reconsidered the value of work-study employees and devised a hiring and training program to choose the best candidates for the position and to reduce the effort full-time staff spent training new workers.
Policy Makers’ Influence On The Emergence Of A New Scientific Discipline: The Case Of Nanotechnology In Ireland, Nicolas Battard
Policy Makers’ Influence On The Emergence Of A New Scientific Discipline: The Case Of Nanotechnology In Ireland, Nicolas Battard
Doctoral
Science has undergone tremendous changes since World War II with the blurring of boundaries between science, government, and industry, as well as the so-called convergence of scientific disciplines. Nanotechnology is an illustrative example of this phenomenon. Boundaries between all these spheres are challenged, renegotiated, and reshaped under the influence of the multiple actors involved. I question here the extent to which nanoscience and nanotechnology (N&N) are emerging as a new scientific discipline under the influence of science and technology policies. With the study of N&N in Ireland from the late 1990s onwards, a focus is placed on both the macro-meso …

Increasing Adolescent Interest In Computing Through The Use Of Social Cognitive Career Theory, Osama Eljabiri
Increasing Adolescent Interest In Computing Through The Use Of Social Cognitive Career Theory, Osama Eljabiri
Dissertations
While empirical research efforts are sufficient to provide evidence of the role of most constructs in the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), this dissertation shifts the research focus and finds serious shortcomings in defining the construct of computer technology learning experiences design.
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate whether, and to what extent, the proposed SCCT-enhanced framework can increase self-efficacy and interest of pre-college and college students in computer-based technology through the newly proposed “Learning Experiences” construct; in particular, whether it can reduce the gender gaps.
As a result of a comprehensive literature review, the dissertation connects learning, …
Svmaud: Using Textual Information To Predict The Audience Level Of Written Works Using Support Vector Machines, Todd Will
Dissertations
Information retrieval systems should seek to match resources with the reading ability of the individual user; similarly, an author must choose vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate for his or her audience. Traditional readability formulas, including the popular Flesch-Kincaid Reading Age and the Dale-Chall Reading Ease Score, rely on numerical representations of text characteristics, including syllable counts and sentence lengths, to suggest audience level of resources. However, the author’s chosen vocabulary, sentence structure, and even the page formatting can alter the predicted audience level by several levels, especially in the case of digital library resources. For these reasons, the performance of …

The Odd-Ending Price Justification Effect: The Influence Of Price Endings On Hedonic And Utilitarian Consumption, Jungsil Choi, Yexin J. Li, Priyamvadha Rangan, Promothesh Chatterjee
Business Faculty Publications
This paper examines how odd-ending pricing influences consumption of hedonic and utilitarian products. Four studies test the hypothesis that the discount image associated with odd-ending prices reduces anticipated guilt and provides justification for hedonic consumption – an effect the authors label the odd-ending price justification effect (OPJE). Study 1 reveals people are more likely to choose hedonic over utilitarian products when they have odd-ending prices. Study 2 finds that the effect of odd-ending prices on hedonic consumption is mediated by guilt reduction. Study 3 reveals a boundary condition for the OPJE – purchase likelihood of hedonic products increases only when …

Privatization Of Agriculture In Post-Soviet Russia: A Model Of Transitioni, Joseph Brian Gross, Dr. Phillip J. Bryson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This research began as in inquiry into the general causes for the failure of modern rural reforms in Russia. This study traces the development of rural trends from the abolition of serfdom in 1861, through the Soviet era of centralized planning and collective farming, up until the post- Soviet era of privatization. This study identifies and categorizes the modern incentives and obstacles that have stymied organizational restructuring of Russia’s rural sector.

Participatory Organizational Development And Social Change: Microfinance Replication In Western China, Marcie Holloman, Dr. Warner Woodworth
Participatory Organizational Development And Social Change: Microfinance Replication In Western China, Marcie Holloman, Dr. Warner Woodworth
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Microfinance (or microcredit) is increasingly being recognized as an effective tool for promoting the socio-economic development of impoverished communities. The crisis of poverty is so great in every corner of the world that it is tempting to jump on the bandwagon of the “microcredit solution” and implement new programs modeled after successful programs elsewhere, without due regard to differing cultural and socio-economic contexts and needs. One of the major factors behind the success of the microfinance movement is its highly participatory structural design, yet there is great need for microfinance institutions (MFIs) to be innovative in designing the content and …

Competitive Intelligence Methodologies And Ethics, Andrew Apcar Greene, Dr. Michael J. Swenson, Dr. Paul Dishman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Competitive intelligence is a systematic and ethical program for gathering and analyzing information about your competitor’s activities and general business trends to further your own company’s goals1. When practiced responsibly it’s legal and ethical, although some companies have been known to participate in disreputable activities such as: stealing information, wiretapping phones, and burglarizing offices, among other activities – entering the more shadier realms of industrial espionage.

Do Venture Capitalists Add Value To Small Manufacturing Firms? An Empirical Analysis Of Venture And Non-Venture Capital Backed Initial Public Offerings, Richard Brown, Dr. James C. Brau
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Venture capital funding of young and high-risk companies is a topic of great interest to both finance practitioners and researchers. A venture capitalist gives funds to privately held companies in hopes of earning a high return on the investment. Venture capitalists also provide more than money: they are viewed as sources of expert advice, both in the industry that the new firm is in, and in the various stages of developing a company. In return for their services, venture capitalists receive equity positions in the monitored firm that potentially offer enormous monetary rewards.

Here we are once again at the most important weekend in American sport. The Super Bowl is Sunday and that means that Americans across the land will create scenes reminiscent of Thorstein Veblen’s classic, The Theory of the Leisure Class. Veblen’s original vocabulary describing the rich of the late 19th century is as appropriate now as it was then. Such phrases as “conspicuous consumption,” “conspicuous waste” and “conspicuous leisure,” seem to have been coined for the Super Bowl.

The Impact Of Chinese Reunification On Hong Kong’S Future Economic Development, Anthony Lam, Dr. Bryan Sudweeks
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Asia suffered a devastating blow to its economy in February of 1997 with the Asian Financial Crisis. The Asian Tiger economies fell to currency speculation and bank debt, beginning with Thailand. Hong Kong, one of the premier business centers in Southeast Asia, was also adversely affected through trade effects. That same year, on July 1, Hong Kong ended its ninety-nine year term as a colony of the United Kingdom and returned to Chinese rule. The “one country, two systems” policy was put in place to ensure Hong Kong’s continued success. Hong Kong would remain a democracy but be part of …

Delay Discounting Affects Entrepreneurial Intention And Action, Tyson Barrett
Delay Discounting Affects Entrepreneurial Intention And Action, Tyson Barrett
Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)
Delay discounting impacts every decision a human makes when given the option of a sooner or a later receipt of a reward. This tendency results in individuals giving up bigger, later rewards for smaller, sooner ones. However, individuals differ in their level of discounting according to their innate tendency and the situation. For example, some individuals naturally discount future rewards more, resulting in preferring even smaller rewards sooner. Because delay discounting affects such a broad spectrum of decision making, the authors hypothesized that delay discounting affects when, or if, an individual intends on starting a business. If an individual starts …

Corporations in today’s high-tech business world must be fully networked internally and externally to be competitive. Quick development and employment of connection applications is vital to a corporation’s success. Only by effectively connecting internally to all divisions and externally to customers, suppliers and partners, can companies gain advantage over their competitors. Two major software companies, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft, have each developed new technologies that promise to change the way corporations connect to each other and do business today by providing a common development standard.

September 11, 2001: How Did The Airlines Account For This Tragic Event?, Terry H. Jackson, Dr. Ted Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
September 11, 2001 will be a day long remembered by Americans and for people around the world. The destruction to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon not only led to the loss of many lives, but these events also affected our economy in a dramatic way. Many industries have been affected by the terrorist attacks, but the industry that has been most directly affected is the airline industry. On the balance sheet, American Airlines and United Airlines only lost two used airplanes each. However, cancelled flights, a decrease in demand for flights, lawsuits, and increased security costs have lead …

Factors Influencing The Growth And Development Of Nicaraguan Small Businesses, Seth Sunderland, Dr. Ted Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The term “small business” is relative to who is applying the term. The United States Small Business Administration classifies any business with 1 to 499 employees as a small business. In 1999 the Peace Corp issued a study on Nicaraguan businesses that defined small businesses as employing 1 to 20 employees. The same Peace Corp study found that 79 percent of Nicaraguan labor force is employed by businesses employing 20 or less people. The Peace Corp also found that only 13 percent of the Nicaraguan labor force works for a business that employs more than 100 people. These numbers indicate …

The Securities and Exchange Commission requires companies to file special reports, called Form 8-K reports, within five to fifteen days of important events that could affect shareholders’ investment decisions. For example, required filings include announcements of events such as mergers and acquisitions, changes in auditors, changes in top management, and other events the filing company deems important to investors. Companies file these reports under nine different item headings. Item Five is the only disclosure that is “optional,” and the nature of Item Five disclosures allows them to contain an array of information and diverse types of information. Electronic copies of …

The Causes Of The Increase Of Tax Evasions In Moldova, Natalia Virlan, Dr. Gary Mckinnon
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The constant honest tax payment by every citizen and firm of the country is a serious problem, which arose in the Republic of Moldova (an ex-member of the Soviet Union) after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then until the present time the tax evasion by physical and juridical persons has not stopped or decreased, and the government does not know when it will.
