Connected: An Enhanced Online Interface For Engagement Between Industry And Academia, David Kirk, John J. Keogh, Terry Maguire

Conference Papers

The drive for third level education institutes to engage with industry, enterprise and the community recognises their interdependence and need for continuous knowledge exchange. The extent to which students are capable of embracing their post-qualification roles, may be determined by the currency of the curriculum and work-readiness, which is informed by the context of the ‘real-worlds’ however they are shaped. Similarly, the activities that challenge industry, enterprise and the community could find support in the broad the spectrum of knowledge, skills and expertise that resides in the domain of formal education.

A key obstacle to collaboration between higher education institutes …

Perspectives On Organization Of The Marketing Function In Higher Education, Susan Tams Jan 2015

Perspectives On Organization Of The Marketing Function In Higher Education, Susan Tams

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The current study was initiated to assess the organization of the marketing function in institutions of higher education and to measure the perceptions of higher education marketing officials about various aspects of marketing. The study is a modified replication of a study by Michael W. Mulnix (1996) and employed the questions developed by Mulnix to measure perceptions of current practitioners. Several demographic questions were added about the respondents and their institutions. An updated study is useful because of three categories of change in higher education since 1996: a) changes in the way higher education conducts its operations; b) changes in …

The New Global Financial Regulatory Order: Can Macroprudential Regulation Prevent Another Global Financial Disaster?, Behzad Gohari, Karen E. Woody Jan 2015

The New Global Financial Regulatory Order: Can Macroprudential Regulation Prevent Another Global Financial Disaster?, Behzad Gohari, Karen E. Woody

Scholarly Articles

This Article posits that the success of macroprudential regulation will depend on four factors. First, the economic philosophy of the central banker in charge of the domestic institution with jurisdiction over macroprudential regulation will prove crucial in the implementation of adopted regulation. If, like Chairman Greenspan, the banker is averse to the exercise of the Central Bank's regulatory oversight authority, then no amount or volume of policy or regulation will prevent or mitigate systemic risks and the accompanying shocks. Second, a sufficiently deep level of international cooperation is required to mitigate regulatory arbitrage, without being so broad that the ensuing …

The Plucking Model, The Great Recession, And Austrian Business Cycle Theory, Ryan Murphy Jan 2015

The Plucking Model, The Great Recession, And Austrian Business Cycle Theory, Ryan Murphy

Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research

This brief note points out that Milton Friedman’s “Plucking Model” has not held following the Great Recession. Friedman argued that the Plucking Model offered evidence against theories like Austrian Business Cycle theory; the bust was what needed explanation, not the boom. But as many economists have pointed out, the years leading up to the Great Recession fit many of the stylized predictions of the Austrian Business Cycle. Given their observations, it is of interest that the bust in recent years has not followed the Plucking Model.

The Impact Of Economic Inequality On Economic Freedom, Ryan Murphy Jan 2015

The Impact Of Economic Inequality On Economic Freedom, Ryan Murphy

Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research

This paper tests the hypothesis that the presence of economic inequality may lead to erosions of economic freedom. Using Economic Freedom of the World as a measure of free economic institutions, it finds that a one standard deviation increase in the gini coefficient reduces the presence of free economic institutions by 0.18 standard deviations. This effect is modest but not at all trivial, and the magnitude of the effect may be especially important in increasing the size of government. Surprisingly, the evidence is mixed for the effect of inequality on regulation, with modest evidence suggesting it may improve the regulatory …

Heterogeneous Moral Views In The Stateless Society, Ryan Murphy Jan 2015

Heterogeneous Moral Views In The Stateless Society, Ryan Murphy

Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research

A growing literature has explored the workability and efficacy of governance without the state. The difficulties typically raised in the context of these studies concern under which conditions cooperation or Hobbesian chaos would arise in the absence of a monopolist of coercion. This paper challenges the idea of the stateless society from another vantage point, arguing the institutions articulated by proponents of the stateless society would struggle at reconciling heterogeneous views regarding the rights of third parties. This is relevant for many of the most contentious policy debates, such as abortion and animal rights.

Unconventional Confidence Bands In The Literature On The Government Spending Multiplier, Ryan Murphy Jan 2015

Unconventional Confidence Bands In The Literature On The Government Spending Multiplier, Ryan Murphy

Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research

Macroeconomists have applied many versions of vector autoregression to measuring the size of the government spending multiplier. Very frequently in the literature on that multiplier, the statistical significance of results is held to an unconventionally low standard of one standard error. This paper will document the pervasiveness of the issue among thirty-one papers. Five of the six papers with at least 500 Google citations use that unconventionally narrow band.

Ceo Equity Incentives And Audit Fees, Yongtae Kim, Haidan Li, Siqi Li Jan 2015

Ceo Equity Incentives And Audit Fees, Yongtae Kim, Haidan Li, Siqi Li

Accounting

This study examines whether CEO equity incentives have an impact on audit pricing. Prior studies investigate whether CEO equity incentives motivate executives to manage earnings for personal financial gains. Our focus is on whether auditors perceive CEO equity incentives to be associated with greater earnings manipulation risk and incorporate such risk in their pricing decisions. We find that CEO equity portfolio vega is positively related to audit fees after controlling for other determinants of audit fees, while equity portfolio delta is not significantly related to audit fees. This result holds after we account for potential endogeneity. The evidence suggests that …

A Study Of The Impacts Of The Panama Canal Expansion On The U.S. Northeast Ports And Strategy Of The Port Of Boston, Chien Wen Yu Jan 2015

A Study Of The Impacts Of The Panama Canal Expansion On The U.S. Northeast Ports And Strategy Of The Port Of Boston, Chien Wen Yu

Management Faculty Publications

When it is completed in 2016, the Panama Canal expansion will increase the trade volume and route from Asia to the United States as well as the competition amongst all U.S. ports, creating economic impacts in several areas. East Coast ports will be affected the most due to investments in harbor expansion projects and rise in cargo traffic and imports. The expansion will provide access for the Post-Panamax ships to the East Coast ports. These ships can increase cargo size from 5,000 up to 13,000 TEU’s (twenty-foot equivalent unit). It is estimated that 20-25% of import traffic will shift to …

Racial Differences In Job Attribute Preferences: The Role Of Ethnic Identity And Self-Efficacy, Jakari N. Griffith, Gwendolyn M. Combs Jan 2015

Racial Differences In Job Attribute Preferences: The Role Of Ethnic Identity And Self-Efficacy, Jakari N. Griffith, Gwendolyn M. Combs

Management Faculty Publications

Using a sample of 149 white and 190 black business students, the authors examined racial differences in job attribute preferences. Results of this study indicate there were significant racial differences in 19 of 21 job attributes examined, with black students placing greater importance on job attributes than white students. Investigation of the mechanisms contributing to this difference reveals that the relationship between race and job attribute preferences was mediated by ethnic identity. Furthermore, the relationship between ethnic identity and job attributes was moderated by personal efficacy, with higher self-efficacy levels leading to greater importance placed on job attributes.

Examining The Impact Of Casinos On Economic Development: A Spatial Analysis Of The Counties In The Mid-Atlantic Region, Andrew J. Economopoulos Jan 2015

Examining The Impact Of Casinos On Economic Development: A Spatial Analysis Of The Counties In The Mid-Atlantic Region, Andrew J. Economopoulos

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

Few have formally evaluated the economic impact of casinos, and yet most agree that it is crucial in estimating the net benefit to society. A new casino investment should stimulate economic activity in the immediate region, but its operations could potentially reduce employment and incomes within the industry. Grinols outlines the factors that could lead to positive or negative growth from the investment, but what is critical to the empirical validation of the investment is the definition of region. Since data is geographically limited to political boundaries, it is necessary to employ a spatial methodology that captures the impact beyond …

Tourism Potential To Benefit The Poor: A Social Accounting Matrix Model Applied To Ecuador, Robertico Croes, Manuel A. Rivera

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The study examines the distributional effects of tourism expansion applying a Social Accounting Matrix model to the case of Ecuador. Specifically the study examines what share of tourism expansion benefits poor people. The study finds that tourism has large multiplier effects on the Ecuadorian economy and has the potential for substantial benefits to the poor. The study also found that distributional effects of tourism development are spread across all household incomes in both urban and rural areas benefiting the lowest and low households the most. Tourism has the potential of reducing inequality and is pro-poor in the case of Ecuador. …

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A longitudinal research design was used to assess the potential internationalization benefits that may occur when hosting a music festival in a small island destination. A macroeconomic analysis was used to assess these benefits. The results reveal that a music festival may make a positive economic impact and provide internationalization benefits for a small economy under the eclectic paradigm and the OLI Framework. The study contributes to the understanding of music festivals as a strategic resource to enhance the competitiveness of small island destinations.

Relational Behavior Of Leaders: A Comparison By Vocational Context, G. Ronald Gilbert, Robert C. Myrtle, Ravipreet S. Sohi Jan 2015

Relational Behavior Of Leaders: A Comparison By Vocational Context, G. Ronald Gilbert, Robert C. Myrtle, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

Organizational researchers widely acknowledge that positive relational behavior is associated with leadership effectiveness. In this exploratory study, we seek to extend previous research examining contextual factors that influence leadership style based on the characteristics of person–vocation fit. Using information derived from a 360° assessment that included one’s top managers, peers, and subordinates (N = 934), we find that leaders working in settings that attract Holland’s Social (S) types demonstrate more positive relational behavior than those who work in Realistic (R) type work settings. Our research also indicates that the relationship between leadership style and perceived effectiveness varies based on …

Using A Group Role-Play Exercise To Engage Students In Learning Business Processes And Erp, Yide Shen, Jennifer Nicholson, Darren Nicholson Jan 2015

Using A Group Role-Play Exercise To Engage Students In Learning Business Processes And Erp, Yide Shen, Jennifer Nicholson, Darren Nicholson

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

With the increasing process-centric focus and proliferation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in organizations, it is imperative for business graduates to understand cross-functional business processes and ERP system’s role in supporting business processes. However, this topic can be rather abstract and dry to undergraduate students, most of whom have little work experience. In this paper, we present a group role-play exercise that has been used in an introductory management information systems course to actively engage students in learning business processes and ERP systems. Student learning outcomes and their perceptions of the group role-play exercise were measured using a questionnaire. …
