Information Systems, Dominant Paradigms, And Emerging Concepts: A Community Clustering Analysis Of The Highest Impact Topics In Information Systems Research, Jonathan P. Allen Jan 2015

Information Systems, Dominant Paradigms, And Emerging Concepts: A Community Clustering Analysis Of The Highest Impact Topics In Information Systems Research, Jonathan P. Allen

Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Strategy

We provide a preliminary analysis of how diverse IS research has been, based on the research topics that have had the highest impact, as measured by academic citations. Does IS have a dominant paradigm? Our analysis argues that the impact of IS research has been dominated by a single research paradigm, which we label as ‘IS acceptance’. When this analysis is repeated for the most recent decade, the highest impact topics are still dominated by ‘IS acceptance’, but are joined by three new topics, ‘IS and design’, ‘IS and strategy’, and ‘IS and expertise’. Our analysis maps the intellectual structure …

Is The Grass Greener? Switching Costs And Geographic Proximity In The High Status Affiliations Of Professional Baseball, Nola Agha, J Cobbs Jan 2015

Is The Grass Greener? Switching Costs And Geographic Proximity In The High Status Affiliations Of Professional Baseball, Nola Agha, J Cobbs

Sport Management

Professional baseball operates a tiered system of talent development facilitated by alliances between Minor League Baseball (MiLB) clubs and higher status Major League Baseball (MLB) parent teams. This study applies management theory to advance the literature on MiLB demand modeling by proposing and testing a new set of demand determinants based on interorganizational alliance principles. Team executives at the AA level should be alert to the high cost of switching team alliances and of changing to a parent club in closer geographical proximity. At the AAA level, affiliation with a winning MLB club exerts a positive effect on AAA demand.

A Compensating Differential Approach To Valuing The Social Benefit Of Minor League Baseball, Nola Agha, Dennis Coates Jan 2015

A Compensating Differential Approach To Valuing The Social Benefit Of Minor League Baseball, Nola Agha, Dennis Coates

Sport Management

This research utilizes a compensating differential framework to measure the social benefits of minor league baseball teams. Consistent with findings at the major league level, individual housing observations from 138 metropolitan areas between 1993 and 2005 show that affiliated teams are associated with a significant 5.7% increase in rents in mid-sized markets ranging from 0.4 to 1.4 million people. On the other hand, independent teams and stadiums are associated with insignificant effects on rents. The positive effect of affiliated minor league teams suggests they are a valuable urban amenity that can contribute to local quality of life.

A Theoretical Comparison Of The Economic Impact Of Large And Small Events, Nola Agha, M Taks Jan 2015

A Theoretical Comparison Of The Economic Impact Of Large And Small Events, Nola Agha, M Taks

Sport Management

In response to the increasing debate on the relative worth of small events compared to large events, we create a theoretical model to determine whether smaller events are more likely to create positive economic impact. First, event size and city size are redefined as continuums of resources. The concepts of event resource demand (ERD) and city resource supply (CRS) are introduced, allowing for a joint analysis of supply and demand. When local economic conditions are brought into the analysis, the framework determines how a city resource deficiency or surplus affects the economic impact of an event. This resource-based approach assists …

Tracking The Dollars: How Economic Impact Studies Can Actually Benefit Managerial Decision Making, Daniel A. Rascher, Michael M. Goldman Jan 2015

Tracking The Dollars: How Economic Impact Studies Can Actually Benefit Managerial Decision Making, Daniel A. Rascher, Michael M. Goldman

Sport Management

Almost every month brings another attention-grabbing headline about a city or country considering a bid for a major sporting or entertainment event. Politicians, business executives, and excited fans weigh in about the possible costs and benefits, with limited numbers provided about the possible economic impact, and even less said about how these numbers were calculated. Most recently, LeBron James’ return to Cleveland was estimated by Bloomberg to boost the city’s economy by $215 million annually, while Cuyahoga County’s projections were more than double this number. A concert of Jay-Z and Beyonce in Baltimore in 2013 was estimated by the local …

Risk Decomposition For Fund Managers, Matthew Dixon Jan 2015

Risk Decomposition For Fund Managers, Matthew Dixon

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This paper describes a methodology extension for decomposing non-linear portfolio risk by fund manager which we refer to as "Manager Component Value-at-Risk". The approach is well suited to funds holding any asset class or instrument type including derivatives. This decomposition approach is additive and fully captures the correlations between instrument returns and thus is well suited for decomposing risk by manager. We provide an example from a representative CTA portfolio that demonstrates superiority of the decomposition approach over other common practices for risk decomposition. The core methodology is implemented in R and made available to readers.

The Validity Of Conscientiousness Is Overestimated In The Prediction Of Job Performance, Sven Kepes, Michael A. Mcdaniel Jan 2015

The Validity Of Conscientiousness Is Overestimated In The Prediction Of Job Performance, Sven Kepes, Michael A. Mcdaniel

Management and Entrepreneurship Publications

Introduction Sensitivity analyses refer to investigations of the degree to which the results of a meta-analysis remain stable when conditions of the data or the analysis change. To the extent that results remain stable, one can refer to them as robust. Sensitivity analyses are rarely conducted in the organizational science literature. Despite conscientiousness being a valued predictor in employment selection, sensitivity analyses have not been conducted with respect to meta-analytic estimates of the correlation (i.e., validity) between conscientiousness and job performance.

Methods To address this deficiency, we reanalyzed the largest collection of conscientiousness validity data in the personnel selection literature …

Corporate Diversification And Ceo Turnover Among Financially Distressed Firms, Jana Lynn Cook Jan 2015

Corporate Diversification And Ceo Turnover Among Financially Distressed Firms, Jana Lynn Cook

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

A comprehensive examination of the differences in compensation and turnover between domestic and multinational firms in distress from 2003 - 2008 was completed. An examination of three major theories of turnover is examined within the boundaries of distressed firms and support is found for the Scapegoat Theory as proposed by Huson in 2004. The results found no significant differences between total compensation levels between domestic and international firms. And with turnover rates of 26 percent and 51 percent, these groups have only board size as a significant impacting variable.

Required Donations: An Empirical Test Of Prospect Theory & Framing Of Per-Seat Contributions In Intercollegiate Athletics, Jason D. Reese, Brandon Brown, Gregg Bennett Jan 2015

Required Donations: An Empirical Test Of Prospect Theory & Framing Of Per-Seat Contributions In Intercollegiate Athletics, Jason D. Reese, Brandon Brown, Gregg Bennett

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine how per-seat contributions are framed, and attempt to understand the effects of different price frames on consumer perceptions and behavior. In doing so, we apply prospect theory to explain how framing an outcome can change preferences and ultimately purchase behavior. The current study used an experimental design to determine which price frame most influences repurchase intentions, when considering three price tiers (e.g. low, moderate, high) determined in a pretest. Our results indicate the best way to increase purchase intentions when implementing per-seat contributions campaigns is to use the Combination price frame (i.e. …

The need for clarity in the healthcare management is a matter of frequent discussion and concern among healthcare professionals, practitioners, patients and academicians. Electronic Health Records would provide clarity, transparency, interoperability and transferability in the health care information and data of the patients. It will also reduce the human mistakes and will reduce the likelihood of wrongly reading or interpreting the information. This paper introduces this useful concept and links it to the two classes of health care practitioners- ‘digital natives’ and ‘digital immigrants’. The paper further identifies and discusses the relationship between user participation and system success and analyses …

Being Good For Goodness Sake: The Influence Of Family Involvement On Motivations To Engage In Small Business Social Responsibility, Whitney O. Peake, Philip E. Davis, Marcus Z. Cox Jan 2015

Being Good For Goodness Sake: The Influence Of Family Involvement On Motivations To Engage In Small Business Social Responsibility, Whitney O. Peake, Philip E. Davis, Marcus Z. Cox

Faculty Publications

Small family and nonfamily firms are acknowledged to serve as important facilitators of social responsibility within their communities; however, both have received relatively little attention in the literature for these efforts or their motivation for undertaking them. Grounded in Enlightened Self-Interest (ESI) and intentions, we explore motivations for participation in socially responsible behaviors and the moderating effect of family involvement. We develop measures for small business social responsibility (SBSR), ESI, and SBSR intentions. Our analyses indicate positive direct effects exist for both SBSR intentions and ESI on engagement in SBSR. We find that family involvement strengthens the relationship between ESI …

Linking Sustainability To Quality Management And Firm Performance, Rajat Mishra, Randy Napier Jan 2015

Linking Sustainability To Quality Management And Firm Performance, Rajat Mishra, Randy Napier

Faculty Publications

Environmental management practices have evolved significantly over the past two decades. During that time, sustainable operations management practices have purportedly made positive contributions to overall firm performance. This paper develops two conceptual frameworks regarding the relationships among specific elements of environmental management, quality management, and firm performance. We suggest that innovation in quality management mediates the relationship between design for environment and firm performance, and that statistical process control techniques moderate the relationship between environmental management systems and firm performance. We identify future research possibilities, based on these frameworks, to inform scholarly research and practice in environmental management and quality …

Long Term Adr Performance: How Do Regional Issues Listed On The Nyse Compare To Us And Regional Index Returns?, Mark Schaub, Todd A. Brown

Faculty Publications

This study examines the long-term performance of Asia Pacific, European, and Latin American ADRs versus the S&P500 and their respective regional indexes from 1990-2010. The sample was dividend by stable markets (1990s) and volatile markets (2000s). We find that, when analyzed in total, regional indexes perform similarly to the S&P500. However, the Asia Pacific and Latin America regions do offer diversification benefits individually. Furthermore, the ADRs from each region underperform in stable markets (1990s) and outperform in volatile markets (2000s) leading to great diversification benefits.

How College Business Students Learn With Emphasis On Differences Between Majors, Nikki Shoemaker, Marie Kelly

Faculty Publications

Students' learning styles play an important role in their success in the classroom and beyond. This study explores the learning styles of business students so that professors can better understand the instructional methods that are most beneficial for their students. A survey of 205 business students in an introductory accounting course revealed that the most common learning style was visual, while the second most common learning style was kinesthetic. These results suggest that a large number of business students process and internalize new information best when they see or actively participate in what they are learning.

Financial Anxiety, Physiological Arousal, And Planning Intention, John Grable, Wookjae Heo, Abed Rabbani

Consumer Sciences Faculty Publications

Results from this exploratory clinical study indicate that financial anxiety—holding an unhealthy attitude about one’s financial situation—and physiological arousal—the physical precursor to behavior—play important roles in shaping consumer intention to engage in future financial planning activity. Findings suggest that those who are most likely to engage the services of a financial adviser exhibit low levels of financial anxiety and moderate to high levels of physiological arousal. The least likely to seek the help of a financial adviser are those who exhibit high financial anxiety and low physiological arousal. Results support findings documented in the literature that high anxiety levels often …
