Monitoring Sale Transactions For Illegal Activity, Robert J. Richardson

Communications of the IIMA

Discriminant analysis and neural network methodologies were applied to the problem of identifying illegal sales transactions. The researchers independently developed models using data provided by a cr^it card company. A series of measures were developed and used to construct the models. The final results were that the discriminant analysis model recognized 32.3% of the fraudulent activity, while the neural network approach found 28.9%. With only 11.6% of the transactions in common, the combination of the two models identified 49.6%i. In order to provide a real time monitoring program, the models were simplified yielding a capture rate of approximately 42%.

The Evolution Of An Internet Market Exchange And Value System: Examples From The Motion Control Industry, William Lightfoot, James Harris

Communications of the IIMA

This manuscript examines the evolution of internet value systems in the motion control industry. We believe the primary reason behind the inconsistent performance of that industry's adoption of the internet in the supply channel was largely due to poor strategy. Using a the concepts of bias exchanges and game theory it is suggested that intemet strategies such as disintermediation and first-mover advantage were elusive because firms focused too much on technology and not enough on customer value. Lessons for managers and future decisions are offered.

Understanding Cyberspace Addictive Behavior With The Critical Social Theory, Ook Lee Jan 2015

Understanding Cyberspace Addictive Behavior With The Critical Social Theory, Ook Lee

Communications of the IIMA

This paper presents an application of the Critical Social Theory (GST) in understanding cyberspace behavior. CST can be used as one of qualitative methodologies in IS research. However most prior IS research utilized a very narrowly drawn insight from CST without historical and social context considered. This study tries to apply a general concept of CST for the purpose of providing plausible explanation for cyberspace behavior. CST identifies unjust conditions and tries to find the cause through critical reflection, which eventually might lead to emancipation of people. In this paper, a cyberspace behavior case of a relatively developed country where …

Communications of the IIMA

Various authors have advocated that the use of a Human Resource Information System (HRIS) should lead to valuable outcomes for the organization. Decreased costs, improved communication, and decreases in time spent on mundane activities should create an environment wherein the Human Resources (HR) department would play a more strategic role in the organization. This study is an initial attempt to determine whether HRIS has reached these potential benefits. Based on responses from a sample of HR directors of from public universities we found that, while valuable, HRIS has not yet reached its full potential in this environment.

The Restech Connections Cd Project: A Case Study On The Social Construction Of Risk, Jason Koch, Jack T. Marchewka

Communications of the IIMA

Risk management is an important component in understanding and managing information technology (IT) projects. The traditional view of risk management focuses on a three-stage process: identifying risk, assessing risk, and developing a strategy for dealing with each risk. This, unfortunately, may give project stakeholders a false sense of security. Although the application of risk management philosophies, techniques, tools, and methods to managing IT projects is not new, the idea of viewing risk as a social construction outlines a new paradigm for understanding and managing risk. Since the idea of a social construction view of risk has been introduced only recently, …

Integrating Information Technology Into Curricula Activities: Participant Observation Of Laptop Use, Lorraine Fisher, Martin Butler, Peter Keenan, Geraldine O' Neill

Communications of the IIMA

This paper presents descriptive use of laptops as a lecturer and students engage in curricula activities over one hour of instruction. Lave and Wenger's (1991) theory of situated learning (SL) is used to contextualise laptop use in teaching and learning, inside the undergraduate business classroom. We examine how laptops are used to support teaching and learning practice and influence the curricula process, as laptops are introduced into instruction. Interpretive ethnography and participant observation capture lecturer and student descriptive narrative as they use laptops. Analysis is presented in time order and documents lecturer / student laptop use inside the undergraduate classroom.
