An Analysis Of Electronic Meeting Comment Translation, Mmilam Aiken, Jose Ablanedo, Mahesh B. Vanjani Feb 2015

An Analysis Of Electronic Meeting Comment Translation, Mmilam Aiken, Jose Ablanedo, Mahesh B. Vanjani

Communications of the IIMA

Multilingual groups often find communication difficult. Even with human interpreters, these groups still suffer from the inherent limitations of oral meetings: only one person at a time can talk, comments are not anonymous, and ideas must be recorded manually. Group Support Systems (GSS) have been used to increase the productivity of traditional, oral meetings by allowing participants to exchange automatically recorded, typed comments simultaneously and anonymously. Integration of language translation software with these systems could enable multilingual groups to achieve the same benefits obtained by monolingual groups. This paper investigates the feasibility of using automatic language translation in GSS meetings …

The Next Generation Of Mobile Computing For Hospitals, Warren Adis Feb 2015

The Next Generation Of Mobile Computing For Hospitals, Warren Adis

Communications of the IIMA

Mobile computing in the broadest sense is when multiple communications devices work together within an environment, unhampered by equipment limitations, distance, or interference. As computer and networking devices are put into smaller and smaller envelopes, their workplace usefulness increases. These mobile devices offer the potential of increasing the quality of healthcare services by making better use of hospital resources, including improved communications among medical and support staff, and increased patient monitoring. This paper depicts several hospital scenarios in order to conceptualize the planning and design of future mobile networks, taking into consideration patient care, management thinking, and technical issues.

Reconciling The Characteristics Vs. Factors Models For Explaining Stock Returns, Brian C. Payne Lt Col, Jeffery Scott Bredthauer Feb 2015

Reconciling The Characteristics Vs. Factors Models For Explaining Stock Returns, Brian C. Payne Lt Col, Jeffery Scott Bredthauer

Finance, Banking and Real Estate Faculty Publications

Daniel and Titman (DT) (1997) disclaim the Fama-French three factor model in favor of a firm characteristics based model to explain stock returns. Davis, Fama, and French (2000) find this characteristics-based model outperforms their model only for the 20.5 year time period from July 1973-December 1993, but the three factor model is robust for the 68-year period from 1929- 1997. We find the DT period represents a unique macroeconomic environment in that significant interaction effects exist between the default (and term) risk premia innovations and returns. Incorporating these effects into a traditional three-factor model help explain the 1973-1993 “characteristics model …

Children's Food Security And Participation In The National School Lunch Program, Ariun Ishdorj, Lindsey Higgins Feb 2015

Children's Food Security And Participation In The National School Lunch Program, Ariun Ishdorj, Lindsey Higgins

Agribusiness

In 2013 nearly 8.6 million U.S. children lived in households in which one or more child was food insecure. The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is one of the largest federally funded food and nutrition assistance programs that aims to provide nutritious, well-balanced lunches for school-age children. Given the important role this program plays on food and nutrient intake of school-age children, we examined the relationship between participation in NSLP and children's food security status. After controlling for the endogeneity of the program participation we found that program participation have positive effect on food insecure and marginally food secure children, …

Daringly Different: The Making Of The Singapore Management University, Kevin Y. L. Tan

Oral History Collection

This is a book about the founding and early years of Asia’s first university in the 21st century - the Singapore Management University or SMU. It provides a background to tertiary education in Singapore to set the scene and offer the reader a glimpse of the landscape in which the remarkable changes leading to SMU’s establishment, and ramifications flowing therefrom, took place. So many of the key actors who were intimately connected to this grand story are still around and actively engaged in the life of SMU, and thus the book benefitted greatly from first-hand interviews with a number of …

Most Admired Leader/Most Admired Follower, Susan D. Baker, Erica L. Anthony, Susan A. Stites-Doe

Organization Management Journal

In introducing concepts of leadership and followership to students, this experiential exercise highlights qualities associated with the leader and follower roles. Various learning objectives guide the development of the exercise. They focus on identification of behavioral qualities possessed by both leaders and followers and on the importance of the leader-follower relationship to the organization’s achievement of goals. Theoretical underpinnings are stressed throughout. In the exercise, students individually develop a list of characteristics associated with their own most admired leader or follower and then share their lists in small groups. In plenary discussion, groups share all characteristics identified, and the instructor …

Setting Goals In Different Roles: Applying Key Results From The Goal-Setting Literature, Lynn E. Miller, Richard M. Weiss Feb 2015

Setting Goals In Different Roles: Applying Key Results From The Goal-Setting Literature, Lynn E. Miller, Richard M. Weiss

Organization Management Journal

Decades of research have demonstrated that managers can effect substantial performance improvements by setting challenging and specific performance goals (Locke & Latham, 2002), providing goal-relevant feedback on a regular basis (Karakowsky & Mann, 2008), and, when appropriate, involving subordinates in goal setting (Stansfield & Longenecker, 2006). This article reviews core findings from the goal setting literature, and presents a collaborative exercise in which teams of students apply these findings to address management problems in five fictitious scenarios. Debriefing tips cite additional research evidence to allow for more nuanced classroom discussion of goal setting. A pretest indicated that prior to completing …

Mission-Centric Learning: Developing Students’ Workplace Readiness Skills, Lisa A. Burke-Smalley, Kathleen Wheatley Feb 2015

Mission-Centric Learning: Developing Students’ Workplace Readiness Skills, Lisa A. Burke-Smalley, Kathleen Wheatley

Organization Management Journal

We discuss and evaluate the implementation of a mission-centric course project that is strategically tied to learning outcomes important to colleges of business. Specifically, to support our college’s mission, undergraduate students enrolled in a training and development class were tasked with applying course concepts to assess the need for, to design, and to deliver (to other business students) workplace readiness training. To aid other management educators interested in adopting similar strategically aligned and feedback-rich learning experiences, we outline and discuss relevant project planning, design, and facilitation issues, as well as present a summary of initial results derived from this project.

Consumer Brand Relationships Research: A Bibliometric Citation Meta-Analysis, Marc Fetscherin, Daniel Heinrich

Faculty Publications

This study examines how scholarly research on consumer brand relationships has evolved over the last decades by conducting a bibliometric citation meta-analysis. The bibliography was compiled using the ISI Web of Science database. The literature review includes 392 papers by 685 authors in 101 journals. The area of consumer brand relationships research is notably interdisciplinary, with articles mainly published in journals for business and management, but also applied psychology and communication. We show the impact of universities, authors, journals, and key articles and outline possible future research avenues. The study explores seven sub-research streams and visualizes how articles on consumer …
