Police Department Spending Vs. Crime Rates, Derek Meacham, Marissa Watkins, Faruk Huskic, Andrew Williams

College of Business and Economics Presentations

Our research will explore the correlation of police-to-population ratio and misdemeanor and felony crimes in Boise, Spokane, and other comparable cities. Our research focus is on determining how concentration of police officers in a region affects crime in that area, and to what extent. We expect to find evidence that supports the literature on police and crime. We will also present an examination of the most efficient ratio, looking at cities with lower crime rates. Our findings will have policy implications for Boise City.

Innovation Campus Adds Korean Food Processor, Chris Dunker

Nebraska Innovation Campus Materials

Suji Park owns and operates Korean restaurants in South Korea and Japan -- and caters food service at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul -- but she has long been drawn to Nebraska’s status as the Beef State. “It’s the Silicon Valley of red meat,” said Park, whose Suji’s Cuisine was announced Monday as the fifth private company and first international tenant of Nebraska Innovation Campus. They already have a sales office employing six people in Omaha. When the Korean food manufacturer opens a research office in the Food Innovation Commons this summer, Park said, Suji’s Cuisine will expand its line …

Long-Term U.S. Cross-Border Security Flows With Developed And Emerging Market Countries Surrounding The Global Financial Crisis, Caitlin Tongco

Honors College Theses

This paper analyzes the impact of the global financial crisis on cross-border long-term security flows from and towards the U.S. We are investigating monthly observations from 72 countries over the period from 2003 to 2013. The findings show that the global financial crisis impacted all cross-border capital flows in our analysis; yet, the timing, the significance, and the nature of the impact varies among the different securities, as well as between a sample of developed and emerging market countries. We find evidence for a flight-to-safety with the start of the global financial crisis, with a significant, but short lived interruption …

Buy American: An Introspective Look Into National Corporate Consciousness, Jenna S. Florence Apr 2015

Buy American: An Introspective Look Into National Corporate Consciousness, Jenna S. Florence

Honors College Theses

My research is interested in examining product perceptions and the importance of national identity on the marketability on a variety of foreign and domestic consumer products. I am also interested in determining whether the process of globalization has weakened an individual’s sense of national identity and whether that changes their preference for purchasing a foreign and/or domestic product. Primarily, my research question asks whether nationalism influences a product’s marketability. My hypothesis suggests that individual perceptions are heavily influenced by a sense of nationalism and ultimately affects an individual’s decision whether or not to buy a foreign good. To test this …

When Being More Different And Less Visible Leads To Commitment And Justice For All, Lisa Farmer Apr 2015

When Being More Different And Less Visible Leads To Commitment And Justice For All, Lisa Farmer

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Little empirical research is available that counters the viewpoint that both demographically dissimilar individuals and telecommuters have low-levels of commitment, in addition to the role of procedural justice in this context. Using a multi-company sample of 201 respondents employed by U.S. firms each with more than 100 employees; the results indicate significant support for high-levels of demographic dissimilarity associated with low-levels of affective commitment towards one’s organization. Contrary to the hypotheses, high-intensity telecommuting was found to be more strongly related to affective commitment, especially when procedural justice was high. Non-significant results were found for telecommuting intensity as a moderator of …

As the boundaries and population of urban areas expand, beverage distributors may seek to expand the capacity in their distribution centers. As a result, they may need to add new locations or increase the utilization of their existing center. This paper investigates the facility location problem through network space, considering traversable truck roads, thereby providing a strategic decision for identifying a depot location in consideration of vehicle routings from a real application. For the analysis, a geospatial tool, which is embedded in the commercial software ArcMap®, was used for routing and calibrating the model. Ten candidates from commercial and industrial …

This year’s Academy Awards was the background for a call to arms for equal pay for women. After years of legislative reform, women are still making less than their male coworkers; women have begun to fight furiously for a change. Recently, companies as big as Walmart and KPMG have had claims brought against them alleging wage discrimination based on gender. Analysts have proven that in the case of KPMG it is almost impossible for it to be anything other than discrimination. There are several studies behind how the wage gap is calculated as well as the many causes behind why …

Firehouse Subs has been a successful submarine sandwich chain for 16 years. Based in Jacksonville, FL, the chain experienced year-over-year growth even after the company transitioned to a franchise business model in 2001. However, with the economic slump in 2008, Firehouse Subs began to experience a decrease in sales of about six percent below prior year performance. Given the company had been thriving from inception this concept was completely alien to the founders, Robin and Chris Sorensen. In a down economy, typically consumers will resort to lesser expensive restaurant options; one of which Firehouse Subs would be classified under. Therefore, …

A Practitioner Critique Of A Conceptual Paper On Measuring Value And Performance, Andrew C. Wicks, Jeffrey S. Harrison Apr 2015

A Practitioner Critique Of A Conceptual Paper On Measuring Value And Performance, Andrew C. Wicks, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

Much of the business literature suggests that firm performance should be measured in financial terms, based on the notion that the primary obligation of a corporation is to provide high shareholder returns. An alternative literature is emerging in which scholars identify the many weaknesses associated with shareholder primacy, and offer alternative performance measures that are focused on a broader set of stakeholders. One such publication was provided to high-‐level executives in large companies. The executives were then given the opportunity to critique the paper and to discuss the extent to which their firms are engaging in the types of performance …
