My Experience With Fundamental Analysis, Nicolas Chapman May 2015

My Experience With Fundamental Analysis, Nicolas Chapman

Honors Scholar Theses

In finance, there are several overarching schools of thought when viewing equity prices in the stock market, such as technical and fundamental analysis. I find the most enjoyment in quantitative matters, so naturally most of my experience with the stock market includes fundamental analysis. Proponents of this methodology purport that there is a true value of a security based on its financials, and that it will trade around that number eventually. Perhaps the most successful investor who uses fundamental analysis is Warren Buffett. Specifically, he believes in valuing a company’s equity by gauging their cash flows and projecting how they …

Residential Property Values And Historic Districts: A Kalamazoo Case Study, Curtis Aardema May 2015

Residential Property Values And Historic Districts: A Kalamazoo Case Study, Curtis Aardema

Masters Theses

Historic districts have been a point of contention in political, economic and community circles since their inception in the early twentieth century, but their impact has grown since the 1966 passage of the National Historic Preservation Act. Often cited by proponents as a productive tool for preserving the cultural and physical elements of the American built environment, historic districts are alternately branded as burdensome and regressive to future development by critics. In order to provide a quantitative assessment of the economic impact of historic districts, this project compares property values from 1990, 2000 and 2010 in both a historically designated …

However, the community possesses neither the resources nor knowledge to develop and promote this potential. In this project, the combination of Gunn’s functioning tourism system model as a conceptual framework and Jamal and Getz’s three-step collaborative community tourism …

The implementation of the Electronic Health Record to substantially improve the practice of medicine has not fully reached its projected potential partly due to many barriers to its adoption. There is growing evidence that one of the reasons for the delay in the adoption of EHR has been due to the negative impact of current EHRs on the clinician-patient interaction, clinician workflow and communications. This research studies the usability of the Electronic Health Record for clinicians involved in cardiac care by evaluating various clinician-patient interaction workflows. The aim of the study is to identify inefficiencies by examining the similarities and …

The Washington Redskins: A Brand In Crisis, Jonathan Benson

Even though it is not new, the debate over the use of the brand and logo by the Washington Redskins has come to the forefront of the collective consciousness. With this debate in mind, I completed a study to answer two questions. Should the Redskins change its brand and logo? And must the Redskins change their brand and logo? In order to complete the study, a survey was conducted with undergraduate students that gathered more than 300 complete responses. After gathering and analyzing the data, I was able to draw conclusions. The first conclusion being that the Washington Redskins should …

One hundred sixty subjects completed a survey that prompted them to remember the brands associated with five different commercials shown during the 2015 Super Bowl, as well as asked other questions about each commercial and the subjects’ television viewing habits. Results showed that a very small percentage of viewers correctly remembered the brand associated with commercials they had seen, and that this correct brand remembrance …

The Future Of Shrimp: Why Indoor Tank Farming Could Revolutionize The Industry, Nicole M. Daniels May 2015

The Future Of Shrimp: Why Indoor Tank Farming Could Revolutionize The Industry, Nicole M. Daniels

Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses

“The United States is currently importing 1.2 billion pounds of shrimp a year from Asia. It is cheap to U.S. consumers, but it’s being produced in an unsustainable way. It will stop…and when it does stop there has to be an alternative way to produce seafood” (Hourigan, 2013, p.1). Because the shrimp supply crisis is growing exponentially, it is the job of countries like the United States, who have resources and technology that less economically developed countries do not, to find a sustainable alternative to the current destructive farming practices that are rapidly damaging ecosystems and endangering human health. In …

This thesis explores the financial performance of firms engaged in the production of luxury goods and services, as measured over a recessionary period. Specifically, it relates firms’ performance to the performance of the United States economy at large, as well as a control firm operating in a different market segment. This analysis revealed the comparatively poor performance of the luxury industry throughout the most recent recession. As economic conditions weakened firms within the luxury industry faced below-average earnings and profits.

Revenue Recognition – Milestone Method (Topic 605) 2010 Amendment: From The R&D Industry Perspective, Sofia I. Tent

Honors Theses

This paper examines the Revenue Recognition – Milestone Method (RRMM), FASB codification amendment of 2010 and its effect on the health of firms heavily dependent on the Research and Development (R&D), as evidenced by the operating profit margin. By utilizing a two-stage OLS model developed by Lev and Sougiannis (1996), this study measures the effect of the adoption of the RRMM on operating profit margin. The sample includes U.S. firms with significant R&D expenses (a R&D expenses/Sales ratio greater than 2%) for the years 2006-2013. Due to the more rapid recognition of income using the RRMM, I expect the operating …

The Effects Of Emotional Intelligence And Relational Climate Of Innovation, Lori D. Kendall

Student Scholarship

The relentless challenge to innovate is the DNA of high-technology firms, and continues to capture attention of scholars and practitioners alike. High-technology firms grow faster on intellectual capital assets with shorter life expectancy; they must pivot in response to external forces more quickly. The challenge for R&D leaders is to ensure that R&D groups provide new opportunities for growth by effective transfer of technology ideation to commercial products. Leaders in these dynamic environments operate in microfoundations of organizational routines and processes within an organization that motivate the sensing, seizing, and executing dynamic capabilities. R&D leaders within the firm are forced …

State Vs. Federal: Marijuana Legislation And Its Effect On Taxes, Mamie G. Duckworth May 2015

State Vs. Federal: Marijuana Legislation And Its Effect On Taxes, Mamie G. Duckworth

Honors Theses

Marijuana is becoming increasingly popular and accepted within our society; so much so that certain states have legalized it for medical or recreational use, despite marijuana remaining illegal with regards to the federal government. This has lead, and will continue to lead, to complicated and uncertain tax scenarios for the businesses that produce and sell marijuana. Many problems stem from the federal government being unable to recognize or associate with businesses that deal with marijuana. This affects these otherwise legitimate businesses by disallowing the use of federally insured banks as well as taking away the ability to seek federal bankruptcy …

This master’s project presents my journey of developing and running a two-day workshop specifically designed to help entrepreneurs get unstuck. It includes principles, frameworks, and materials developed for this two-day workshop. Inspiration for this project came from my own entrepreneur experience over the last 13 years. Over that time period I have encountered many roadblocks and found that the resources available to established small business owners were limited and those that do exist did not always meet my needs. This workshop has been developed keeping in mind the two things that are most important to small business owners, time and …

An Investigation Of Credit Borrower Concentration, Heng Yue, Pingui Rao, Jigao Zhu May 2015

An Investigation Of Credit Borrower Concentration, Heng Yue, Pingui Rao, Jigao Zhu

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Credit borrower concentration arises when a bank or financial institution lends a large amount of its funds to a few large borrowers. We find that borrower concentration is positively related to non-performing loans and negatively related to financial performance. We also find that the voting power of bank’s controlling shareholder is positively related to the borrower concentration. The evidence is consistent with the view that controlling shareholders divert resources away from banks by extending a high volume of loans to a few related parties, which leads to high borrower concentration. Further evidence indicates that some seemingly unrelated large borrowers, as …

Investment, Duration, And Exit Strategies For Corporate And Independent Venture Capital-Backed Start-Ups, Bing Guo, Yun Lou, David Perez-Castrillo May 2015

Investment, Duration, And Exit Strategies For Corporate And Independent Venture Capital-Backed Start-Ups, Bing Guo, Yun Lou, David Perez-Castrillo

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We propose a model of investment, duration, and exit strategies for start-ups backed by venture capital (VC) funds that accounts for the high level of uncertainty, the asymmetry of information between insiders and outsiders, and the discount rate. Our analysis predicts that start-ups backed by corporate VC funds remain for a longer period of time before exiting and receive larger investment amounts than those financed by independent VC funds. Although a longer duration leads to a higher likelihood of an exit through an acquisition, a larger investment increases the probability of an IPO exit. These predictions find strong empirical support.
