Development And Quality Of Life In Cities, Nate Peach, Luke Petach Jan 2016

Development And Quality Of Life In Cities, Nate Peach, Luke Petach

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Articulating the goals of economic development and defining quality of life has drawn the attention of influential thinkers from Socrates to Sen. Attempts to quantify and compare economies as they pertain to these concepts have largely focused on the macroeconomy. In this study, the Metropolitan Development Index is created to measure development and quality of life in large, urban areas in the United States. The researchers then test the sensitivity of city rankings to the data used in constructing the index. These tests indicate that the index is a substantive conception of development and quality of life. Additionally, the index …

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Purpose – In response to today’s marketplace in which many Asian brands are trying to expand their businesses into Western nations, this study investigated the strategic use of cultural authenticity that Asian brands may employ for their success. Although the benefits of using cultural heritage in brand strategies have been noted by past literature, the efficacies of how Asian brands can use brand logo designs to positively influence their brand success have not been studied. To fill this gap, the purpose of this paper is to examine how Chinese brands can increase willingness to try among US consumers by establishing …

Helping Students Crack Annuity, Perpetuity, Bond, And Stock Valuation Formulas, Chengping Zhang Jan 2016

Helping Students Crack Annuity, Perpetuity, Bond, And Stock Valuation Formulas, Chengping Zhang

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Mainstream finance textbooks present valuation formulas of annuities, perpetuities, stocks, and bonds, but the texts seldom explain the story behind them, leaving students in the dark about why these formulas work. The aim of this paper is to illuminate the black box of these formulas, thus helping finance instructors and students truly understand them. Starting from the basic valuation principle, we can reach each of these seemingly daunting formulas via a few simple algebraic steps. When students reach their “Ah-ha” moment at the end of each derivation, it motivates them and subsequently boosts their interest and confidence in learning Finance.

An Econometric Model Of High School Graduation Rates In Oregon, Emily Mavrakis, Elizabeth Miller

Student Scholarship - College of Business

This study aims to analyze potential factors causing low high school graduation rates in the state of Oregon. We developed an econometric model measuring six independent variables: violent crime rates; income per family, the percentage of the population that is Hispanic, the percentage of family households with only one parent, alcohol use in adults, and teen pregnancy. Our dependent variable was measured as the percentage of the population between 18 and 24 without a high school diploma. From our results we found two of our variables to be economically significant: family structure and alcohol. However, the coefficient for alcohol suggested …

Student Scholarship - College of Business

This paper is concerned with measuring, quantifying, and modeling the extent to which governmental human rights abuses influence the Gross Domestic Product per capita adjusted for purchasing power parity of a nation. The intent of this study is to help develop a statistical framework for human rights under which better and more informed governmental policy decisions can be made. The results of this study suggest strong positive relationships between governmental regulatory quality, mean years of education, and government respect for physical integrity rights and higher GDP per capita (PPP). There is also no statistical relationship between a nation's perceived rule …

The following research has been conducted in order to establish both the economic and statistical significance of certain factors that affect the percentage of those who hold a bachelor’s degree by age 25. We look at what demographics are/are not important when predicting who will obtain a bachelor’s degree by age 25, and list some options we think would increase the percentage of those who hold a bachelor’s degree, based on our research. We stipulate that increasing the percent of the population holding a degree will better prepare people for success and a higher standard of living in our rapidly …

Rebranding: The Effect Of Team Name Changes On Club Revenue, Nola Agha, Michael M. Goldman, Jess C. Dixon

Sport Management

Research question: The purpose of this study is to explore the financial effect of four types of team name changes, three of which have not been previously studied. We do so in the context of development leagues where rebranding occurs with considerable frequency, thus affecting a great number of sport managers.

Research methods: The effect of rebranding on club revenue was derived by combining the results of two analyses. The first used an economic demand equation to examine the attendance variations of 475 Minor League Baseball teams in 244 cities in the United States and Canada between 1980 …

An Investigation Of Highly Identified Fans Who Bet Against Their Favorite Teams, Nola Agha, B. David Tyler Jan 2016

An Investigation Of Highly Identified Fans Who Bet Against Their Favorite Teams, Nola Agha, B. David Tyler

Sport Management

Using a mixed-method exploratory approach we describe and explain the seemingly nonnormative behaviors of highly identified fans who Bet Against their Favorite Teams (BAFT). Axial coding of qualitative data from 190 survey respondents and two focus groups indicates the emergence of common themes allowing a typology to unfold that explains the motives for and against BAFTing. Results reveal that Gamblers BAFT for reasons un-related to fandom. Hedgers, on the other hand, BAFT precisely because they are fans; they offset a perceived impending emotional loss with a financial gain, a behavior we identify as Hedging Against Future Failure (HAFFing). This research …

Better Use Case Diagrams By Using Work System Snapshots, Narasimha Bolloju, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Research to date shows significant variability in the success of applying the common technique of use case diagramming for identifying information system scope in terms of use cases performed by actors interacting with an information system or performed automatically by the information system. The current research tests a) the benefits of using a work system snapshot, a basic analytical tool from the work system method, before producing use case diagrams, and b) the additional benefits of enhancing use case diagramming constructs to distinguish between automated activities, activities supported by the information system, and relevant manual activities. Teams of student subjects …

The Bid-Ask Spread In The Danish Stock Market: Evidence From The 1990s, Torben Voetmann Jan 2016

The Bid-Ask Spread In The Danish Stock Market: Evidence From The 1990s, Torben Voetmann

Finance

This paper investigates the cost components of bid-ask spreads around earnings announcements on the small Danish stock market in the 1990s. The results indicate that negative earnings surprises convey pricing information, suggesting the existence of significant information asymmetry between market makers and informed traders. Negative earnings surprises resulted in an increase in adverse-selection cost and trading volume while inventory-holding and order-processing costs decreased, leading to a combined decrease in the realized spread. The change in the realized spread is significant, while the change in the quoted bid-ask spread is negligible. Overall, the results suggest that informed traders’ ability to assess …

Impact Of Product Label Communication Congruency On Attitude Certainty And Purchase Intention For Food Allergy Stakeholders Under High And Low Levels Of Elaboration, Roger W. Wortman

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

Food allergies within the United States and Europe have become exceedingly prevalent in children, adolescents, and adults. In the United States alone, over 12 million people have been diagnosed with at least one food allergy. If the allergen is accidentally consumed, the food allergy sufferer may suffer a life-threatening condition known as anaphylaxis. More than 200 U.S. food allergic consumers die annually as a result of anaphylaxis due to ingestion of food allergens. To safely manage food allergies, food allergy sufferers and stakeholders (such as caregivers) require clear and complete ingredient information to avoid certain allergens in packaged food products. …

Accounting Information Systems: A View From The Public Eye, Rachelle Paige Miller, Esther Bunn, Kelly Noe Jan 2016

Accounting Information Systems: A View From The Public Eye, Rachelle Paige Miller, Esther Bunn, Kelly Noe

Faculty Publications

In order to fully appreciate the potential impact accounting information systems have on the accounting profession, an understanding of what accounting encompasses is necessary. Over the years, accounting has evolved from what many would call a “checks and balance” system to a much more complex system involving complicated activities such as calculating taxes and garnishments, auditing financial statements and processing payroll to name a few. It would be reasonable to think that advanced technology such as accounting information systems would only enhance the production of these activities. However, like with any “game changers,” there are always potential threats involved. The …

To verify their calculations, students with the same rodeos are grouped together to compare costs. Final rodeo costs are presented to the class where differences in cost allocations and reasons for these differences …

The Economic Impact Of The 2015 Big Nac Music Festival, Brandon Wade Chaddick Jan 2016

The Economic Impact Of The 2015 Big Nac Music Festival, Brandon Wade Chaddick

School of Human Sciences Research Showcase

Infrastructure is what drives small towns in the United States. Defined as “the basic, underlying framework of a system or organization” (The Free Dictionary, 2015), the infrastructure of a small town encapsulates the various roads, businesses, schools, and factories involved with providing the town with economic stability. Unfortunately, in the years following the United States’ economic downturn, this stability has been severely altered. Thus, in an effort to maintain their economies, many small towns are learning to adapt and innovate to protect and nurture their resources. Such innovations include fairs, meetings, conventions, and, the focus of this study, events.

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: January 15, 2016, Eric Thompson, William Walstad Jan 2016

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: January 15, 2016, Eric Thompson, William Walstad

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) fell by 0.12% in December 2015. The slight decline in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, suggests that economic growth in Nebraska will be solid, rather than strong, during the first half of 2016. The decline follows significant increases in the LEI-N in both October and November. Among components of the indicator, the value of the U.S. dollar rose during December. A higher U.S. dollar reduces the competitiveness of Nebraska exporters in manufacturing and agriculture. There also was a decline in airline passenger counts and …
