The New Requirements Relating To Going Concern Evaluation And Disclosure Provide A Critical Improvement To The Financial Statements Taken As A Whole, Achraf A. Seyam, Sharon Brickman Mar 2016

The New Requirements Relating To Going Concern Evaluation And Disclosure Provide A Critical Improvement To The Financial Statements Taken As A Whole, Achraf A. Seyam, Sharon Brickman

Publications and Research

The going concern principle assumes that an entity will continue to exist into the future. This assumption implies that the entity will not be compelled to end their operations, liquidate their assets, or go into bankruptcy. It is an integral assumption in financial statements since it allows for the deferral of recognition of certain expenses until a period of time into the future, when the company is still assumed to exist. Members of management, as well as financial statement auditors, are required to identify signs that could indicate that an entity will not be able to continue their operations into …

Disability Visibility And Stigma Threat: Effects On The Performance, Stress, And Self-Control Of Disabled Workers, William Brice Mar 2016

Disability Visibility And Stigma Threat: Effects On The Performance, Stress, And Self-Control Of Disabled Workers, William Brice

Open Access Theses

Having a stigmatized disability is a depleting experience. For those with a disability, there are many factors that contribute to potential performance decrements in any given situation. Visibility of the disability, and the stigma connected to the disability are two such factors—which I argue based on research on motivation, regulation, and stress, contributes to the regulatory depletion experienced by disabled individuals. I conducted an experimental study where participants took part in a workplace simulation. Participants were given an artificially simulated disability and both the visibility of the disability and the stigmatizing nature of the disability were manipulated. I found a …

Green Building Retrofits In A Corporate Setting, Edward M. Snook Jr. Mar 2016

Green Building Retrofits In A Corporate Setting, Edward M. Snook Jr.

Sustainability and Social Justice

Buildings influence human consumption levels and lifestyles, require resources for creation and operation, and occupy physical space in the environment. This study examines if energy efficient buildings provide sufficient benefits to overcome costs in a certified green building project and the ways that tenants and owners can work together to accomplish retrofit projects and LEED certification in existing buildings. The results of the LEED feasibility analysis demonstrated that the office building studied could achieve Silver or Gold certification with little or no infrastructure and process change cost. Additionally, benefits exist for both the building’s owner and tenant, and costs can …

A Response To “Transaction Cost Economics On Trial Again”, Michael Schermann, Philip Yetton, Helmut Krcmar Mar 2016

A Response To “Transaction Cost Economics On Trial Again”, Michael Schermann, Philip Yetton, Helmut Krcmar

Information Systems and Analytics

We appreciate the careful and thoughtful commentary on Schermann et al. (2016) by Lacity and Khan (2016). Their commentary caused us to reflect on some of the underlying assumptions guiding our research. In the spirit of Lacity and Khan (2016), we do not attempt to defend our research and ‘win’ the conversation. Instead, we build on their insights to contribute to this potentially fruitful conversation among IS scholars started by Lacity and Khan (2016). We are grateful for the invitation from the Journal of Strategic Information Systems (JSIS) to do this.

Federal Home Loan Bank Advances And Small Business Lending, Travis R. Davidson, W. Gary Simpson Mar 2016

Federal Home Loan Bank Advances And Small Business Lending, Travis R. Davidson, W. Gary Simpson

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Adequate credit availability for small businesses is an important public policy issue because small businesses are essential for employment and economic growth for the economy. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 includes a provision that could potentially support financial institutions in the provision of credit to small businesses through the use of advances from the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) system that are secured with small business loans. We explore the relation between FHLB advances to financial institutions and the provision of loans to small businesses. We find a positive link between the change in FHLB advances and the change in …

Commercial Bank Small Business Lending Pre And Post Crisis, Kevin T. Jacques, Richard Moylan, Peter J. Nigro Mar 2016

Commercial Bank Small Business Lending Pre And Post Crisis, Kevin T. Jacques, Richard Moylan, Peter J. Nigro

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

We analyze small business lending at U.S. commercial banks, how it has changed over time and how it differs by bank size. Specifically, we examine the impact of government policy intervention on small business lending in the aftermath of the financial crisis. We find several important results. First, we find that the Troubled-Asset Relief Program’s (TARP) $200 billion Capital Purchase Program (CPP) had little impact on the banks that received capital injections’ small business lending. Second, the Small Business Loan Fund (SBLF) lending program appears to have been a success as banks participating in the loan fund increased their lending …

The Big Short, Elizabeth Armon Mar 2016

The Big Short, Elizabeth Armon

Communication Studies

The Big Short (McKay, 2015), adapted from the non-fiction novel The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis (2010), follows three separate but parallel stories leading up to the United States housing crisis of 2008. On a macro-level, the film brilliantly depicted the creation, and the ultimate burst, of the credit and housing market bubble. However, on a micro-level the audience is given an opportunity to realize and empathize with the internal struggle that many of the main characters faced as they grappled with the fact that their financial gain from shorting the market came with the caveat …

Theses and Dissertations

Academic inquiry into entrepreneurial phenomena has had a rich history over several decades and continues to evolve. This editorial draws attention to the classics: seminal articles that make profound contributions to the development of an academic field in entrepreneurship studies. We focus on the formative years of entrepreneurship research, specifically the 1970s and 1980s, to identify classics using a key informant approach that surveys members of the journal editorial board. Each nominated classic is introduced and discussed by an editorial board member, with particular focus on research opportunities that may be pursued going forward. Metro Meals On Wheels Treasure Valley Employs A Low-Cost Routing Tool To Improve Deliveries, Andrew S. Manikas, James R. Kroes, Thomas F. Gattiker

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we discuss a project in which we developed a spreadsheet-based system that interfaces with a no-fee driving-directions application programming interface to quickly and accurately build a travel time and distance matrix and then rapidly determine near-optimal delivery-route schedules using a modified genetic algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, the method we used to create the travel matrix had not been employed previously in an academic study. The tool was tested and refined in a humanitarian setting—a local branch of the Meals on Wheels Association of America (now Meals on Wheels America), an organization that combats hunger …

Why Use Multiple Choice Questions With Excess Information?, Jason Bergner, Joshua J. Filzen, Mark G. Simkin

Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The examinations administered by accounting instructors, professional certification examiners, textbook writers, and preparatory accounting software all routinely include multiple-choice (MC) questions with excess (yet related) information. Despite their widespread use, little is known about how MC questions with excess information (hereafter MCE questions) affect student test performance. Based on an empirical analysis of the tests of 374 students in two introductory accounting classes at a single university, we found that average performance was lower on MCE questions than non-MCE questions, but was sensitive to the overall difficulty of the tested concept. We also found no significant difference in the power …

Is The Discovery Of Oil A Curse Or A Blessing To Nigeria?, Ahmed S. Saidu, Saidu B. Aliyu, Umar A. Zubair

Bullion

The discovery of oil in commercial quantity in Oloibiri in Niger Delta in 1955 opened a new chapter in the economic landscape of Nigeria. Before the discovery of oil resources, agriculture was the main source of government revenue. Over the years however, revenue from oil export become the backbone of the economy. The annual budget, which defines economic direction the country charts, is solely based on crude oil revenue. This situation can be likened to one putting his eggs in one basket. And it is exactly this situation that has become the major source of agitation by oil producing areas …

Treasury Single Account System And Economic Juche: The Nigerian Experience., Kingsley Imandojemu

Bullion

This paper critically examines the nexus between the full implementation of the Treasury Single Account System (TSA) and Economic emancipation in Nigeria. Using data sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin, the study employed the use of explorative analysis. Findings emanating from the research indicate that the full implementation of TSA is capable of rejuvenating the drive for economic emancipation in Nigeria. Therefore, this paper has recommended policy reforms to serve as an operational framework for the full implementation of TSA, being one of the pre-conditions of optimal resource utilization and economic autarky.

Do Education, Spending Habits And Planning Habits Affect Investing Habits?, Miran Simunic

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the influence of formal education, spending habit, and planning habit on investing habit, while controlling for age, gender, income, and self-perception of financial knowledge. The previous studies tested the influence of education on certain money management skills or investing habits, but none of them explored the influence of formal education, spending habit and planning habit on investing habits. This thesis explores this influence of those three independent variables with control variables on a sample that represents the entire population of the United States. The testing is performed on the data from 2012 …

Development And Validation Of A Rule-Based Time Series Complexity Scoring Technique To Support Design Of Adaptive Forecasting Dss, Monica Adya, Edward J. Lusk Mar 2016

Development And Validation Of A Rule-Based Time Series Complexity Scoring Technique To Support Design Of Adaptive Forecasting Dss, Monica Adya, Edward J. Lusk

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Evidence from forecasting research gives reason to believe that understanding time series complexity can enable design of adaptive forecasting decision support systems (FDSSs) to positively support forecasting behaviors and accuracy of outcomes. Yet, such FDSS design capabilities have not been formally explored because there exists no systematic approach to identifying series complexity. This study describes the development and validation of a rule-based complexity scoring technique (CST) that generates a complexity score for time series using 12 rules that rely on 14 features of series. The rule-based schema was developed on 74 series and validated on 52 holdback series using well-accepted …
