An Information And Communication Technologies For Development (Ict4d) Decision Framework For Building An Information Economy In Developing Countries: The Case Of Palestine, Hasan Nuseibeh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Building a thriving information economy is a goal for many developing countries. This research helps identify the factors (inhibitors and motivators) that can be used to leverage the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in a developing country to build a sustainable information economy that benefits other sectors of the economy. This is done by studying the current literature on this topic and then synthesizing the theoretical models to create a unified decision framework to help developing countries set their path to building a sustainable information economy.

International Trade Effects Of Regional Economic Integration In Africa: The Case Of The Southern African Development Community (Sadc), Mengesha Yayo, Sisay Asefa

International Journal of African Development

Empirical studies on regional economic integration process in Africa exhibit sluggish progress, and there by limited level of intra-trade. The existing literature in Africa, particularly in the Southern African regional integration bloc, has neglected the effects of regional economic integration dealing with disaggregated data. This study analyzes trade creation and diversion effects of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) using disaggregated data. The investigation estimates an augmented gravity model using panel data and random effect estimator methods applying instrumental variables where needed.

The results show that intra-SADC trade is growing in the fuel and minerals and the heavy manufacturing sectors …

The Use Of Rfid And Sensor Networks To Optimize Enterprise Operations And Logistics, Sobhi Mejjaouli Jul 2016

The Use Of Rfid And Sensor Networks To Optimize Enterprise Operations And Logistics, Sobhi Mejjaouli

Theses and Dissertations

One of the biggest challenges faced by today’s supply chain is machine and equipment failures which impacts the producers’ ability to meet their scheduled demand and lead to logistics delays and quality issues, especially when perishable items are transported. This research work eliminates, or at least decreases the costs pertaining to the impact of machine and equipment failures on supply chain operations, particularly on production and transportation, like out of stock costs, lost sales cost and penalties imposed by customers. Two relatively new technologies for the production and logistics domain, RFID and wireless sensor networks, provide the needed sensing, processing, …

Implications Of Manipulations Of Soil Quality On The Growth Of European Buckthorn (Rhamnus Cathartica) In A Greenhouse, Sam L. Pepper, Liam Heneghan Jul 2016

Implications Of Manipulations Of Soil Quality On The Growth Of European Buckthorn (Rhamnus Cathartica) In A Greenhouse, Sam L. Pepper, Liam Heneghan

DePaul Discoveries

European buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica L.) is an invasive shrub that is capable of changing the nitrogen content of a soil through the deposition of its nitrogen rich leaf litter. This change creates conditions that may favor recolonizing by buckthorn and negatively affect the growth of native plants. In this greenhouse experiment, we examined the effect of altering soil quality by adding mulch comprised of buckthorn wood on above and belowground biomass, stem length and leaf production of buckthorn saplings. We found that buckthorn saplings planted in buckthorn mulch had reduced stem length and leaf production compared to growth in …

The Challenges To Social Entrepreneurship In Brazilian Art/Handicraft Organizations: Today And In The Future, Claudia Green Phd, Adnan Dhiyan Jul 2016

The Challenges To Social Entrepreneurship In Brazilian Art/Handicraft Organizations: Today And In The Future, Claudia Green Phd, Adnan Dhiyan

Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship

This is a case study of O Sol, a Brazilian art/handicraft social entrepreneurship cooperative that began over 50 years ago. O Sol produces authentic art/handcraft that is sold to tourists in Rio de Janeiro. The organization promotes human development and authentic Brazilian culture through the production and selling of art/handicrafts. However, today it is at risk economically, socially and culturally. To examine this case, students learn about social entrepreneurship, creating shared value and creating social value in tourism organizations as they examine the challenges of the globalization of authentic art tourism.

Is There A Dark Side Of Big Data? - Point, Counterpoint, Dorthe Dejbak Håkonsson, Tim N. Carroll

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

Haakonsson and Carroll see two sides to Big Data. In his executive experience, Haakansson finds big data slows the decision making process and the implementation of decisions as well. Executives tend to wait for more data just because it is there. Is there a solution? Haakonsson argues that leadership based upon experience and courage is needed. Carroll sees a different world where we have continually improved tools which can automate the analyses of big data and give us answers quickly. That is, big data is not a problem, but a solution for executives. But there is also a problem; what …
