Demographic Characteristics Influencing Religious Tourism Behaviour: Evidence Form A Central-Eastern-European Country, Anna Irimias, Ariel Mitev, Gabor Michalko
Demographic Characteristics Influencing Religious Tourism Behaviour: Evidence Form A Central-Eastern-European Country, Anna Irimias, Ariel Mitev, Gabor Michalko
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Although religious tourism and pilgrimage have been widely studied there is very limited research that explores the peculiarities in attitude and behaviour among tourists with different demographic factors. The present exploratory study enhances the discussion on perception of religious tourism behaviour. Specifically, eleven statements on attitude and behaviour were explored among 345 Hungarians with different socio-demographic backgrounds. The results show that there are significant variations between senior and young travellers: seniors see as important, the educational purposes and feelings of national identity related to sacred sites while these are less motivating for the young. The frequency of participating in religious …

Interfaith Tourist Behaviour At Religious Heritage Sites: House Of The Virgin Mary Case In Turkey, Zafer Öter, Mehmet Yavuz Çeti̇nkaya
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This study questions selected behavioural aspects of travellers belonging to different religious beliefs during their religious heritage site visits. Tourist behaviour needs to be analysed in specific circumstances. This study aims to clarify in situ problems experienced by religious tourists, behavioural differences of tourists with different beliefs, and religious tourist behaviour regarding cultural heritage site protection. A qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews has been followed. Documentary analysis provided secondary data. On-site observation and face-to-face interviews with key-informants provided primary data. Snowball (referral) sampling was applied as non-probability sampling was convenient for data collection. Primary data suggest that visitor behaviour tends …

Japanese Small Type Coastal Whaling, Sue Fisher
Japanese Small Type Coastal Whaling, Sue Fisher
Commercial Whaling Collection
2016 marks the 70th anniversary of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW) as well as the 30th anniversary of the International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling. It also marks three decades of effort by Japan to overturn this ban. Its strategy to circumvent the moratorium by issuing permits to kill protected whales for scientific research is famous—even the subject of a 2014 lawsuit at the International Court of Justice. Less well known is Japan’s strategy to overturn the ban by persuading the Commission to authorize a category of commercial whaling known as Small Type Coastal …

Success Guide – An Inspirational Guide To Excel As A Leader And Ceo, M. S. Rao

Leadership And Sprituality, James J. Lynch, William J. Fadrowski
Leadership And Sprituality, James J. Lynch, William J. Fadrowski
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
With a combined wealth of experience, the authors explore the connection between leadership and spirituality. Reflecting upon their own respective experiences and relevant literature, there appears to be a certain conclusion that spirituality must be imbued in every leader. Whether that spirituality is faith-based or simply inspired by servant-orientation, it is this type of leadership that must be advocated as a way to ensure that all leaders are driven by a moral compass.
Investigating Favoritism From A Psychological Lens, Tarik Abdulkreem Alwerthan
Investigating Favoritism From A Psychological Lens, Tarik Abdulkreem Alwerthan
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The aim of this conceptual paper is to discuss the association between favoritism -which includes nepotism- and the individual psychological well-being. Becker (1957) distinguished between two kinds of discrimination namely, a positive one which is discrimination in favor of, such as nepotism and a negative one which is discrimination against (Graham, 2013; Taylor & Turner, 2002; Williams, Yu, Jackson, & Anderson, 1997). Importantly, Becker (1957) highlights that “the social and economic implications of positive prejudice or nepotism are very similar to those of negative prejudice or discrimination” (p. 7). The consequences of being discriminated against have been studied for several …

The Spiritual Quest Of Steve Jobs: Connecting The I-Dots Gazing Forward, Glancing Back, Satinder Dhiman
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
As the author indicates, this article is not simply another homage to a business giant, but an expose that discusses his commingling of technology and the humanities – not for the sole purpose of increasing his own riches, but with the objective of leaving the world in a better condition.
Leadership In Academia: Dean’S Disease – Its Sources, Seductions, And Solutions, Pat Cantrell
Leadership In Academia: Dean’S Disease – Its Sources, Seductions, And Solutions, Pat Cantrell
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This paper analyzes the behavioral dysfunction known colloquially as “dean’s disease” in terms of the classic group of mortal sins to which we are all susceptible and the particular problems faced when serving in an administrative capacity in academia. Practical remedies for those afflictions are suggested based upon the available literature, more specifically Bediean (2002) and Spritzer (2004) as well as the author’s own experiences.
The Fragile Balance Of Power And Leadership, Angela M. Jones, Sheri L. York
The Fragile Balance Of Power And Leadership, Angela M. Jones, Sheri L. York
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The aim of this article is to first define effective leadership and power, highlighting the differences between the two. The focal point is that power and effective leadership are not interchangeable and should not be treated as such. Power is a tool while effective leadership is a skill. Simply because a person wields power does not necessarily mean that he or she is an effective leader. Conversely, we will discuss how a leader is unquestionably endowed with a certain degree of power in order to maintain that particular position. Finally, because leaders have power at their disposal, we will explore …
Looking Through A Glass Darkly: Reflections On Power, Leadership And The Black Female Professional, Tennille Nicole Allen, Anton Lewis
Looking Through A Glass Darkly: Reflections On Power, Leadership And The Black Female Professional, Tennille Nicole Allen, Anton Lewis
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Despite a historical record of activism and leadership, African American women have largely gone unnoticed. Authors Allen and Lewis point out that this same treatment is widely evident today in all fora: the workplace, the classroom, academia, and government. Rather, intelligence, hard work, and technical competencies have either been dismissed or displaced, relegating the African American female leader to inferior status or resulting in wholly disparate and demeaning characterizations.
The Greater Planetary Good: From A Precept To A Program, Mark Manolopoulos
The Greater Planetary Good: From A Precept To A Program, Mark Manolopoulos
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The author unequivocally sets forth the shortcomings of neoliberalism and what it has wrought worldwide. For without understanding the deficiencies ― and with hope, the remedies ― of conducting “business as usual,” global challenges such as climate change will remain unabated. For the greater planetary good, Manolopoulos puts forth certain tasks which must be undertaken to fully comprehend the necessity of conceiving the greater planetary good. He offers, in lieu of a negative critique, a blueprint of sorts … detailing how to fundamentally inform, and reform, global social organization.
Transformers: African American Women Leaders In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Yvette Lynne Bonaparte
Transformers: African American Women Leaders In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Yvette Lynne Bonaparte
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This qualitative study documents the experiences of African American women leaders in the pharmaceutical industry in the context of the transformative leadership model. Transformative leadership is a theory that recognizes that the success of individuals and organizations (including pharmaceutical companies) may be impacted by material realities and disparities that exist in a larger societal context. Consequently, transformative leaders seek to promote change (Shields, 2011). Eight African American leaders were interviewed regarding their leadership experiences in the pharmaceutical industry. The interview text was then coded based on the seven tenets of transformative leadership. The results indicated that, collectively, all participants exhibited …
Leadership Of Humanitarian Organizations Working In Less Developed Countries: A Best Practices Analysis, John Oliphant
Leadership Of Humanitarian Organizations Working In Less Developed Countries: A Best Practices Analysis, John Oliphant
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Many people from the developed world, who intend to help the poor in less developed countries, actually end up doing harm by creating more dependence, demonstrating ignorance of the local culture, not understanding the importance of long-term relationships, and offering solutions to problems without ever getting input and buy-in from those they intend to help. There is very little published research in scholarly journals regarding how those from the developed world can best approach humanitarian relief and development work in the developing world. In this qualitative analysis using a collective case study design, humanitarian relief and development organizational leaders share …

Chapter, Examining and reconciling identity issues among artist-entrepreneurs, co-authored by A. Erin Bass, UNO faculty member.
In recent years, the global creative economy has experienced unprecedented growth. Considerable research has been conducted to determine what exactly the creative economy is, what occupations are grouped together as such, and how it is to be measured. Organizations on various scales, from the United Nations to local governments, have released ‘creative’ or ‘cultural’ economy reports, developed policies for creative urban renewal, and directed attention to creative placemaking – the purposeful infusion of creative activity into …
I Am An Artist! What Do I Know About Business?, Angela Wright
I Am An Artist! What Do I Know About Business?, Angela Wright
Dept. of Organisation & Professional Development Publications
What has business to do with art? Should artists understand business? This research is concerned with the world of the artist who must operate in a business world. In the words of the late singer, Luciano Pavarotti (2003), artists must „be heard and be seen‟ to be successful. Commercial entities expose their products and services to clients to survive, and for the artist, this is no different. The paper examines if there is a need to ensure that our artistic graduates are „market ready‟, and specifically examines this concept in the context of an Irish Institute of Technology (IT). Artists …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Early withdrawal or exclusion from the labor market leads to significant personal and societal costs. In Norway, the increasing numbers of young adults receiving disability pension is a growing problem. While a large body of research demonstrates positive effects of Supported Employment (SE) in patients with severe mental illness, no studies have yet investigated the effectiveness of SE in young adults with a range of social and health conditions who are receiving benefits.
