An Examination Of State And Local Government Pension Underfunding –Implications And Guidance For Governance And Regulation, Craig L. Foltin

Business Faculty Publications

State and local government pension underfunding has become a major focus of public policy debate due in large part to recent Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) actions that have brought national attention to the issue. The extent of these plans underfunding has been debated, along with the necessity for state government intervention and the level of regulatory actions that should be enacted by state legislatures. State and local public pension plans do not fall under the enumerated powers of the federal government in the Constitution and are therefore left to each individual state to regulate. The amount of plan underfunding …

A Correlational Analysis Of A Leadership Development Model And Church Growth, Thomas D. Mullins Oct 2018

A Correlational Analysis Of A Leadership Development Model And Church Growth, Thomas D. Mullins

PhD in Organizational Leadership

Organizational growth and vision can outpace leadership development, which ultimately creates frustration and decline in leadership, followership, and teamwork. To counter regression, organizations must determine the factors that hinder leadership development while creating pathways towards organizational success. Research indicates that church attendance in America is in decline, but there are exceptions to this national trend. A case study of one of the fastest growing churches in America reveals a correlation between intentionally fostering a culture of leadership development and one’s ability to continue seizing available growth opportunities. This parallel hypothesized by the researcher in this study was validated through the …

Measuring Knowledge And Experience In Two Mode Temporal Networks, Martin G. Everett, Chiara Broccatelli, Stephen P. Borgatti, Johan Koskinen Oct 2018

Measuring Knowledge And Experience In Two Mode Temporal Networks, Martin G. Everett, Chiara Broccatelli, Stephen P. Borgatti, Johan Koskinen

Management Faculty Publications

Two mode social network data consisting of actors attending events is a common type of social network data. For these kinds of data it is also common to have additional information about the timing or sequence of the events. We call data of this type two-mode temporal data. We explore the idea that actors attending events gain information from the event in two ways. Firstly the event itself may provide information or training; secondly, as co-attendees interact, they may pass on skills or information they have gleaned from other events. We propose a method of measuring these gains and demonstrate …

Experiential Organizing: Pursuing Relational And Bureaucratic Goals Through Symbolically And Experientially Oriented Work, Keimei Sugiyama, John Paul Stephens

Faculty Scholarship

Current scholarship on organizational practices that foster a sense of care and collaboration in work relationships has yet to fully account for the potential misalignment between the goals of a given practice and how it is actually experienced. To address this issue, we develop a theoretical framework of experiential organizing, which we define as an iterative process through which positive relational and bureaucratic goals of a practice are pursued via symbolically and experientially oriented work. We offer theory to explain how organizations move through the experiential organizing process, what different types of work are required, and how the different parts …

Could An Alternative Policy Design Have Produced A Stronger Mortgage Modification Outcome For Hamp?, Sean Macdonald Oct 2018

Could An Alternative Policy Design Have Produced A Stronger Mortgage Modification Outcome For Hamp?, Sean Macdonald

Publications and Research

This paper conducts a study of the relative effectiveness of the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) - the primary federal mortgage loan modification program - from early 2009 through 2016. It evaluates U.S. Treasury Department and other data sources, and reviews the recent literature on the relative success of the program. The analysis suggests that HAMP’s success rate in modifying mortgage loans was likely constrained by its voluntary design, a structure that enabled lenders and servicers to prioritize the interests of investors in assessing the risks of modification. It then considers the economic issues surrounding the foreclosure issue and presents …

An Analysis Of Rating Systems Used By Watchdog Organizations For Nonprofit Charities In The Health And Human Services Sector, Sara Strathmann Oct 2018

An Analysis Of Rating Systems Used By Watchdog Organizations For Nonprofit Charities In The Health And Human Services Sector, Sara Strathmann

Senior Theses

In the United State, lack of trust and accountability are developing trends among donors in regard to charitable nonprofits in the health and human services sector. Watchdog organizations are working diligently to provide useful data to donors to combat this growing issue. While some watchdog organizations focus on quality of statistics, others focus largely on quantity of metrics. Additionally, some rating systems are solely based on financial data, while others consider nonfinancial data as well. Although different methodologies concentrate on varying metrics, this thesis seeks to find a comprehensive, yet easy-to-use rating system that allows users to understand both financial …

Evolving Non - Profits: Alternative Funding Toward Social Good, Jillian Barbieri, Taylor Curran, Alexandra Russo, Jeremiah Titone, Dawn Distefano Dps

Business: Faculty Presentations

This research is part of a semester-long project from undergraduate students at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, NY. The theme emerges from a pedagogical philosophy that an essential learning outcome of their undergraduate studies is the significant influence that business has upon society while working with a local non-profit. For example, having students enter into the business world where profit is a healthy by-product and is not the sole take-away toward today’s career development is critical in developing tomorrow’s ethical and social leaders. The learning activity leading to the learning outcome is requiring the undergraduate business students to experience this …

Can Maternity Benefits Have Long-Term Effects On Childbearing? Evidence From Soviet Russia, Olga Malkova

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper quantifies the effects of Russia’s 1981 expansion in maternity benefits on completed childbearing. The program provided one year of partially paid parental leave and a small cash transfer upon a child’s birth. I exploit the program’s two-stage implementation and find evidence that women had more children as a result of the program. Fertility rates rose immediately by 8.2% over twelve months. The increase in fertility rates not only persisted for the ten-year duration of the program, but it reflected large increases in higher-order births to older women who already had children before the program started.
