This paper emerges from a pedagogical philosophy that business students should experience real-world problem solving that allow them to demonstrate evidence of learning and its application to the world of business. This paper builds the case that business education must lead the student toward a professional outcome where he or she can apply the knowledge and skills gained during the college journey so that he or she is prepared for all that is expected of the student as a business professional.

This study analyzes the impact of the Miles Trade business in the Brazilian airline industry. This is linked some factors: economy recession, cultural traces, legal flaws and new technologies that led to the creation and growth of the Miles Trade business in Brazil. The impacts over airlines are related to loyalty weakening between customers and airlines and revenue dilution due to the lower prices of air tickets sold in miles. Can Maternity Benefits Have Long-Term Effects On Childbearing? Evidence From Soviet Russia, Olga Malkova

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper quantifies the effects of Russia’s 1981 expansion in maternity benefits on completed childbearing. The program provided one year of partially paid parental leave and a small cash transfer upon a child’s birth. I exploit the program’s two-stage implementation and find evidence that women had more children as a result of the program. Fertility rates rose immediately by 8.2% over twelve months. The increase in fertility rates not only persisted for the ten-year duration of the program, but it reflected large increases in higher-order births to older women who already had children before the program started.

This important technological innovation, initiated by emerging Internet companies, is helping the traditional financial industry's payment business-represented by commercial banks-expand in both depth and breadth. In this paper, I examine the factors that influence tribal decisions regarding gaming policy. First, I look into past accounts of the causes of gaming diffusion and attempt to overcome some of their shortcomings. In particular, previous research has neglected the limited role of federalism, geography, and the impact of gaming during undetermined legality. By collecting data from gaming expansion on tribal lands in California, I provide increased nuance to the story of gaming diffusion. This report is a collaboration between the Mastercard Foundation and University of Minnesota that examines the livelihoods of youth aged 16–25 who participated in two Learn, Earn and Save programs in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. It documents their post-program trajectories and examines the role that gender, employment sectors, certification, engaging in mixed livelihoods, financial capital, and social networks have had on their lives. Data were collected from 130 youth over a five-year period through qualitative interviews as well as surveys and demographic data. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the most significant public health problems currently facing the U.S. If it is left untreated, the likelihood of sustaining a treatment response decreases. While early identification has been identified as a critical focus in trying to obtain better health outcomes, new drug treatments appear quite promising.

Identifying Ineffective Monitors From Securities Class Action Lawsuits, Chi Shen Wei, Lei Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We identify “ineffective” institutional monitors based on the prevalence of occurrences of securities class-action lawsuits in their overall portfolio. We find that firms with a higher representation of such institutional investors among the firms’ large shareholders have a greater likelihood of future litigation and experience more negative market reactions upon such litigation filings. These firms exhibit other unfavorable governance outcomes including poorer acquisitions and lower CEO turnover-performance sensitivity. We find suggestive evidence that ineffective monitoring may be a result of higher operational risk.
