Relationship Between Perceived Contribution, Professional Respect, And Employee Engagement, Rafael Eustacio Guarin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Disengaged employees are a threat to a company's survival in a highly competitive world. Despite employee engagement benefits, the mediation of interactions between leaders and followers and the specific drivers of engagement remain poorly understood. This correlational study was grounded on leader member exchange (LMX) theory and examined the relationship between 2 dimensions of LMX (perceived contribution and professional respect) and employee engagement. In this study, 68 manufacturing employees from the southern region of the United States responded to 2 surveys to measure the LMX dimensions and the level of employee engagement. Middle School Teachers' And Administrators' Experiences When Students Transition, Thomas L. Jones Jan 2019

Middle School Teachers' And Administrators' Experiences When Students Transition, Thomas L. Jones

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Student discipline and subsequent placements are a common problem in education. This qualitative phenomenological study addressed a gap in the literature by discovering the experiences of middle school teachers and administrators regarding student discipline, classroom removal, and assignment of students to alternative education. This research describes the development of an interview protocol based on critical incident theory and demonstrates its usage in drawing out thick, rich descriptions which help increase the trustworthiness of qualitative research. Initial interview data are presented to highlight the utilization of critical incident theory to elicit specific information about how participants experienced various critical interactions that …

Strategies For Small Business Sustainability, Victor K. Adoukonou Jan 2019

Strategies For Small Business Sustainability, Victor K. Adoukonou

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Small businesses represent more than 99% of all employers in the United States, but more than 50% of small businesses have failed before 5 years. Climate change, digitization, and social media contribute to a paradigm shift in consumers' habits, as more consumers have become environmentally and social justice conscious. Business leaders who are unable to follow the consumers' trends and changes of habit may not succeed in sustaining their businesses. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies owners of small businesses in the District of Columbia use to sustain their businesses for longer than 5 years …

Relationship Among Compensation, Benefits, Intrinsic Motivators, And Potential Referral Candidates, Nathaniel Ryan O'Bear Jan 2019

Relationship Among Compensation, Benefits, Intrinsic Motivators, And Potential Referral Candidates, Nathaniel Ryan O'Bear

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

High rates of turnover among truck drivers in the United States limit the abilities of organizations to effectively move freight if organizational leaders cannot efficiently and economically replace drivers. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship among compensation, benefits, intrinsic motivators, and potential referral recruiting in transportation organizations. Herzberg’s 2-factor theory was the theoretical framework for this study. Secondary data were collected for 566 Class A truck drivers from an Illinois-based partner organization’s 2018 employee satisfaction survey. The results of the multiple linear regression analyses indicated a significant relationship exists, F(3,562) = 258.323, p < .001, R2 = .580, among compensation (β = .231, p < .001), benefits (β = .101, p < .002), intrinsic motivators (β = .554, p < .001), and potential referral recruiting in transportation organizations. Overall, the independent variables accounted for 58% of the variance in the dependent variable with intrinsic motivators having the largest effect. The implication of these findings for positive social change includes equipping business leaders with information about motivational factors for recruiting drivers through referrals, which might increase community employment levels to improve the standard of living.

Consumer Embarrassment – A Meta-Analytic Review And Experimental Examination, Alexander H. Ziegler Jan 2019

Consumer Embarrassment – A Meta-Analytic Review And Experimental Examination, Alexander H. Ziegler

Theses and Dissertations--Marketing and Supply Chain

This dissertation consists of two essays that discuss the influence of embarrassment on consumers. In the first essay, I examine consumers’ coping responses to embarrassment in a meta-analytic review. In essay two, I utilize an experimental approach to investigate the impact of embarrassing encounters on unrelated consumers who merely observe the situation.

In the first essay, the meta-analysis is guided by findings in the literature that demonstrate embarrassment can both promote and detract from consumer well-being. However, despite being investigated for decades, little is known about how consumers cope with embarrassing situations, and when and why consumers respond in positive …

Essays On External Forces In Capital Markets, Marcus Painter Jan 2019

Essays On External Forces In Capital Markets, Marcus Painter

Theses and Dissertations--Finance and Quantitative Methods

In the first chapter, I find counties more likely to be affected by climate change pay more in underwriting fees and initial yields to issue long-term municipal bonds compared to counties unlikely to be affected by climate change. This difference disappears when comparing short-term municipal bonds, implying the market prices climate change risks for long-term securities only. Higher issuance costs for climate risk counties are driven by bonds with lower credit ratings. Investor attention is a driving factor, as the difference in issuance costs on bonds issued by climate and non-climate affected counties increases after the release of the 2006 …

Binary Bright-Line Decision Models For Going Concern Assessment: Analysis Of Analytical Tools For Bankruptcy Prediction Considering Sensitivity To Materiality Thresholds, Sid Bundy Jan 2019

Binary Bright-Line Decision Models For Going Concern Assessment: Analysis Of Analytical Tools For Bankruptcy Prediction Considering Sensitivity To Materiality Thresholds, Sid Bundy

Theses and Dissertations--Accountancy

In August, 2014, the Financial Accounting Standards Board issued an update concerning the disclosure of uncertainties about an entity’s ability to continue as a going concern. The standard requires an entities management to evaluate whether there is substantial doubt about the entity’s ability to continue as a going concern and to provide related footnote disclosures in certain circumstances. One consequence of this regulation is the need for guidance for audit testing of management’s assessments in each phase of the audit.

This research evaluates the usefulness of bankruptcy prediction models as analytical tools in the planning stage of an audit for …

Role Of Sponsor-Selection In Marketing Communications Of New Local Hallmark Events: A Perspective Of Image Transfer, Jerred Jungi Wang, James J. Zhang

AMTP Proceedings 2019

With the rapid growth of sport popularity throughout the world, developing local hallmark events have become an emerging trend in many urban and suburban communities. Yet, the underdeveloped brand equity of new events makes marketing communications challenging. Built upon the balance theory, the schema theory, and the elaboration likelihood model, this study was designed to examine the image transfer from the sponsor-end to the event-end in the context of new local hallmark events while considering potential moderating effects of image fit (IF) and sport identification (SID) in this process.

The balance theory suggests that to achieve the cognitive consistency, people …

When Beneficence Benefits The Benefactor: Altruism And Rent Seeking, Taylor P. Stevenson Jan 2019

When Beneficence Benefits The Benefactor: Altruism And Rent Seeking, Taylor P. Stevenson

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

The process of rent seeking refers to the use of political processes to capture payments to a resource beyond the opportunity cost of the resource. I describe an example of rent seeking that coexists with the economic problem of explaining altruism. I use data from real property sales to estimate the value of an economic rent that accrued to an individual as the direct result of a local government public expenditure project on donated land. I argue that we may view the donation of the land as the winning bid in a rent seeking contest and therefore not purely altruistic.

Vehicle Make As A Determinant Of Automobile Loan Default, Exposure At Default, And Duration Until Default, Colene Trent Phd, Andrew Tiger Phd, Joel Wyatt, Kyle Yeoman Jan 2019

Vehicle Make As A Determinant Of Automobile Loan Default, Exposure At Default, And Duration Until Default, Colene Trent Phd, Andrew Tiger Phd, Joel Wyatt, Kyle Yeoman

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

In the automobile loan market, lenders face the risk that borrowers will default. In evaluating potential clients, lenders would benefit from the ability to answer three questions: Who will default? What is the potential loss exposure when the borrower defaults? When will the borrower default? This paper suggests that lenders consider the make of vehicle purchased by the borrower when attempting to answer these questions. We analyze applicant-level and loan-level data from an American credit union, employing logistic, tobit, and censored normal regression. Our results suggest that lenders could more efficiently price for risk by including a borrower’s choice of …

The current study seeks to determine student perceptions of the learning environment of a finance lab, as well as perceptions of …

Spurring Tensions At The Workplace And The Moderating Role Of Psychological Resilience: A Paradox Theory Perspective, Rawia Ahmed Jan 2019

Spurring Tensions At The Workplace And The Moderating Role Of Psychological Resilience: A Paradox Theory Perspective, Rawia Ahmed

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Paradoxes are integral parts of our work lives. In this paper, I tested workplace triggers of four different categories of tensions: belonging, learning, organizing, and performing tensions, and I offered a theoretical framework on how these types of tensions affect employees' wellbeing negatively by examining stress. Further, I presented psychological resilience as a contingency variable that reduces the experience of stress at the workplace. I also created the organizing tensions instrument. I validated the scale and tested the model with three different samples: Sample 1 (125 MBA students), sample 2 (time 1 520 Qualtrics Panel respondents), and sample 3 (time …

The Nature Of Latin American Markets In The Presence Of Credit Events, Patricio Aguilar Jan 2019

The Nature Of Latin American Markets In The Presence Of Credit Events, Patricio Aguilar

CMC Senior Theses

In the past two decades the Latin American region has experienced a number of credit crises stemming from large sovereign debt levels and sharp currency devaluations. This study aims to discover whether or not the sovereign credit default swaps (CDS) in the Latin American region lead equity markets prior to these sovereign credit events. Through a sample of the seven largest Latin American economies and daily return data from 2001 to 2018, I try to empirically test this question through a Generalized Least Squared model. The paper finds little significant evidence of CDS leading equity markets in price discovery prior …

Accounting For Goodwill: The Effectiveness Of Amortization And Impairments Before And After Asc 350, Jessica Cruz Jan 2019

Accounting For Goodwill: The Effectiveness Of Amortization And Impairments Before And After Asc 350, Jessica Cruz

CMC Senior Theses

Prior to the implementation of FAS 142 in 2002, goodwill was amortized annually. Now, companies with goodwill on their books must test it annually for impairment. This paper examines the effectiveness of goodwill amortization and impairment of goodwill both before and after the adoption of FAS 142 by analyzing their effect on abnormal stock returns. My results regarding the effect of goodwill amortization on stock returns are inconsistent, suggesting that goodwill amortization is not useful in determining the value of a company. My results also suggest that the stock market anticipates goodwill impairments before they are announced.

The Growth Of Socially Responsible Investing Practices In U.S. Equity Markets And Abnormal Sin Stock Returns, Jack Lori Jan 2019

The Growth Of Socially Responsible Investing Practices In U.S. Equity Markets And Abnormal Sin Stock Returns, Jack Lori

CMC Senior Theses

In my Senior Thesis, I explore the growth of socially responsible investing (SRI) practices in U.S. equity markets and abnormal sin stocks returns. I analyze the historical performance of socially responsible ETFs and portfolios of current sin stocks—alcohol, tobacco, gaming, and aerospace & defense stocks. I propose that as socially responsible investing practices continue to grow in U.S. equity markets, more industries will eventually be deemed sinful—such as sugary beverages, fast food/sugary food, biotech & pharmaceuticals, and tech/social media. I examine two sinful industries—alcohol and tobacco—by comparing the performance of these sinful portfolios before and after their industries were widely …

Welfare Losses From First-Come-First-Serve Course Enrollment: Outcome Estimation And Non-Market Maximization, Rory Fontenot Jan 2019

Welfare Losses From First-Come-First-Serve Course Enrollment: Outcome Estimation And Non-Market Maximization, Rory Fontenot

CMC Senior Theses

College course enrollment operates as a market under supply cap. Because of the limited number of seats available for any given course some students who have a higher demand for a course are unable to enroll. The current registration system at the Claremont Colleges functions as a random draw system with added time costs. The lack of price signalling in the markets leads to a loss in overall welfare of the student body. By running data through simulated demand curves I am able to determine, on average, how much welfare is being lost by a random draw system. The percent …

Fostering Transformational Leadership In Asian Americans: How To Reach The C-Suite, Khadija Ganijee Jan 2019

Fostering Transformational Leadership In Asian Americans: How To Reach The C-Suite, Khadija Ganijee

CMC Senior Theses

This paper investigates what has caused a lack of Asian American leadership in the corporate space and how transformational leadership can be the solution for these people by using their culture to their advantage. This was accomplished through a comprehensive review of transformational leadership and the personality traits associated with it, as well as psychological research on Asian American issues in the workplace and the role of Asian American culture. Stereotyping and discrimination play a role in the workplace, but usually, what a person can do to combat these issues is not explicated. This thesis aims to fill in that …

Leveraged Buyouts: The Predictive Power Of Target Firm Characteristics, Yutao (James) Jiang Jan 2019

Leveraged Buyouts: The Predictive Power Of Target Firm Characteristics, Yutao (James) Jiang

CMC Senior Theses

This paper utilizes a hazard model to predict the probability of leveraged buyout transactions for public firms. Rather than testing specific hypotheses, this paper incorporates all plausible predictors identified in existing literature to better delineate the effects of different characteristics. Largely confirming past results, I find that LBO transactions are more likely to occur for companies with more stable cash flows, less market visibility, lower market valuation, lower ownership concentration and lower costs of financial distress. By including LBO transactions from 1980 to September 2018, I find preliminary evidence that since the financial crisis of 2008 – 2009, private equity …

The Effectiveness Of Collaboration Within Supply Chain Management: A Case Study Of Adidas Group, Daniel Carr Jan 2019

The Effectiveness Of Collaboration Within Supply Chain Management: A Case Study Of Adidas Group, Daniel Carr

CMC Senior Theses

For a multi-national company like Adidas, supply chain management is one of the most crucial aspects of business operations. Products cannot be sold unless Adidas’s supply chain is well-managed and efficient, and public perception of a brand/company is critical to success.

This case study analyzes the effectiveness of Adidas's distinct “collaborative approach” to supply chain management, which is characterized by not only monitoring and auditing suppliers, but also training them to make Adidas’s standards their own and approaching suppliers with the intention of building long-term relationships where the suppliers can become self-sufficient.

This study reviews the structure of Adidas's supply …

Are Women Executives Hurting Firm Performance? An Examination Of Gender Diversity On Firm Risk, Performance, And Executive Compensation, Krystal Diane Sung

CMC Senior Theses

In order to assess the continuing imbalance of top executives between genders, I examine the effects of gender diversity within top management teams on firm risk, performance, and executive compensation. Capitalizing on previous analysis, I apply three unique differentiators. First, I utilize current data from 2012 to 2017 from Compustat, CRSP, and ExecuComp. Second, I provide a unique subset view on a firm and individual performance of female CEOs to examine executive compensation. Third, my scope of analysis expands to S&P Composite 1500 companies. I use separate models to estimate the effect of gender diversity on firm risk by examining …

Liquidity Risk And Mutual Fund Manager’S Stock Choice, Hannah Berg Jan 2019

Liquidity Risk And Mutual Fund Manager’S Stock Choice, Hannah Berg

CMC Senior Theses

Liquidity risk is a large issue faced by mutual funds. Large funds typically trade in size, and these large sizes often have a significant impact on prices. My hypothesis is that large funds will not invest in illiquid assets as much as smaller funds due to the price sensitivity of illiquid assets. While this seems obvious, the results from this study are not in agreement with this hypothesis. My paper finds that as the illiquidity of a stock increases, so does the probability that a large fund invests in the stock.
