How Do You Perpetuate It-Enabled Change When Top Management Participation And Involvement Diminish?, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Adrian Yong Kwang Yeow, Christina Wai Lin Soh
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Background: Research has demonstrated that sustained top management participation and involvement are important for IT-enabled change. However, this is not always possible. How IT-enabled change can succeed when top management participation and involvement diminish is an unsolved, but important research question. Method: We perform a 5-year exploratory longitudinal case study. Results: Our data is presented in two parts. We first present the contextual elements (goals, people, structures/processes, and artifacts) during the two years top management was actively participating and involved. For the three-year period where top management participation and involvement diminished, we present the contextual elements, and middle management's enactment …

This study integrates research on managerial discretion within the behavioral theory of the firm to examine how four CEO psychological traits serving as antecedents of managerial discretion—ambiguity tolerance, cognitive complexity, locus of control, and commitment to the status quo—moderate firm responses to poor performance. Using CEOs’ responses to questionnaires, CEO ambiguity tolerance is found to positively moderate the relationship between negative attainment discrepancy and strategic change when performance is slightly below aspirations, defined as average market return for the firm’s industry. Further, CEOs with greater cognitive complexity are found to engage in more strategic change when …

Planning For Change In The Electric Power Industry: A Primer For Transactive Energy Scenario Development, Joshua Binus
Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
The electric power industry and its associated infrastructures (a.k.a. "the grid") are evolving from centrally planned, organized, and operated networks of players, technologies, and resources to systems of systems that are increasingly digitized and distributed in their operation and innovative capacity. Subsequently, strategic planners and technology managers associated with the electric power industry are faced with a range of scenarios to evaluate, including one that considers the emergence of commercialized transactive energy systems in the coming ten-year time horizon. The crafting of a transactive energy scenario can help inform technology innovation and management efforts that benefit consumers, electricity providers, and …

Digital Innovation And Socioeconomic Transformation: Mobile Money In Sub-Saharan Africa, Wenxiu (Vince) Nan
2019
Digital innovation enabled by digital technologies has the potential to transform existing socioeconomic practices, processes, and structures. In spite of the transformative potential, the relation between digital innovation and resulting socioeconomic transformation has been underexplored, especially at the societal level in developing countries. To fill this research gap, this dissertation is dedicated to investigating how and why digital innovation leads to socioeconomic transformation, when it does. Drawing on the digital innovation and technological transition literatures, I propose a multilevel theoretical framework that illustrates the processes and mechanisms through which digital innovation enables socioeconomic transformation in developing countries context. This dissertation …
Exploring The Effects Of Mindfulness In Marketing: Mindfulness, Ethics, Emotional Labor And Service Quality, Emma (Junhong) Wang
Exploring The Effects Of Mindfulness In Marketing: Mindfulness, Ethics, Emotional Labor And Service Quality, Emma (Junhong) Wang
2019
Mindfulness, i.e., nonjudgmental, present-centered awareness and attention, finds its roots in ancient spiritual traditions, and is most systematically articulated and emphasized in Buddhism. Although arguably relevant to a variety of practices, mindfulness research is sparse in marketing literature. In particular, there is a shortage of empirical research on the application of mindfulness in marketing (Ndubisi, 2014). This dissertation follows a three-paper model to begin to address this shortage in marketing literature. Paper one uses the Service-Dominant Logic of Marketing and Moral Development Model as theoretical lens to discuss how mindfulness could be a viable approach to fostering ethical marketing behaviors. …
The Use Of Secrets In Marketing And Value Creation, Ivan Fedorenko
The Use Of Secrets In Marketing And Value Creation, Ivan Fedorenko
2019
Keeping secrets is common to both corporations and public organizations. However, secrets have, until recently, received little attention in the marketing literature. The research on secrecy, to date, has been focused on the appropriating value from innovation. The purpose of my dissertation is to explore how secrecy can be used to create value for consumers. Paper one integrates the existent research on secrecy to develop an overarching framework and categorize four common types of secrets: reputational secrets, trade secrets, managerial secrets, and marketing secrets. The drivers and consequences of secrecy are identified across all three levels of analysis: individual, organizational …

The purpose of this dissertation is to improve understanding of the dual-career couple phenomenon by exploring gender differences in levels of role centrality and partner support, life satisfaction, and the gender wage gap. I engage with these areas of inquiry through three research papers.

This replication study investigates a series of hypotheses based on past research …

A New Standard For Governance: Reflections On Worker Representation In The United States, Julian Constain
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
The contemporary state of corporate law in the United States is one that is skewed toward the archaic principle of shareholder primacy. This narrow conception of corporate purpose has resulted in governance mechanisms that tend to overlook the many stakeholders that are affected by, and, in turn, affect the bottom line of modern corporations. In the wake of the recently proposed Accountable Capitalism Act, this Note investigates the viability of adopting a system of mandated worker board representation—codetermination—in the United States. The Note employs a comparative analysis of the German and Swedish experiences with codetermination, and then evaluates the policy, …
