Wearing Two Hats: A Virtual Reality Experience Of College Life From The Perspective Of First-Generation College Students Who Are First-Generation Americans, Lorena Kanzki

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Wearing Two Hats is a 360, virtual reality video filmed in point-of-view style to immerse viewers into the experiences of first-generation Americans who are the first in their families to attend college. These students can be seen as wearing two hats as they hold two first-generation identities, meaning they must undergo both projects of acclimating to the United States and acclimating to college life at a starting point that is likely behind their peers. This video is intended to be watched in a virtual reality headset. Once wearing the headset, the viewer becomes the main character, a first-generation college student …

Sensable: A Comprehensive Exploration Of Designing For Sensory Interaction To Create Dynamic & Inclusive User Experiences In The Context Of Sustainable Fashion, Emma Comtois May 2019

Sensable: A Comprehensive Exploration Of Designing For Sensory Interaction To Create Dynamic & Inclusive User Experiences In The Context Of Sustainable Fashion, Emma Comtois

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Often, the default in interaction design is to focus on visual interactions, but this leaves a lot to be desired when people can’t interact with those experiences because of an impairment. This approach is further limited when there are singular experiences for all users. To combat this, I completed an exploration of how to design sensory interactions using a combination of motion, visual and voice design, partnered with artificial intelligence to create expansive, accessible experiences. To give this exploration real-life context, I created a series of journeys for users who want to learn about sustainable fashion, an industry with a …

Shades Of Beige: Tarte Cosmetics And Racial Inclusivity, Dominika J. Jedinak May 2019

Shades Of Beige: Tarte Cosmetics And Racial Inclusivity, Dominika J. Jedinak

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The release of Shape Tape foundation, a facial cosmetics line by Tarte Cosmetics, sparked disappointment and outrage in consumers for the lack of racial inclusivity in the range of shades offered. This came as a surprise to Tarte who, from their beginning has been a very socially aware and ecologically thoughtful company. Was this outrage justified? Did Tarte owe their customers an apology? And, if so, how should they go about making amends?

When Tarte released an apology, they further angered consumers who took to social media to express their dissatisfaction. The Shape Tape foundation release sparked a debate on …

Revitalizing The Street Of Dreams: A North 24th Street Case Study, Tiffany Hunter

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The purpose of this study is to analyze the North 24th Street corridor in Omaha, Nebraska, to highlight the benefits of investing in commercial real estate development, propose tools for financing new development or redevelopment projects, and to suggest methods of building a coherent development plan to avoid gentrification. Commercial development provides the following: quality business space, accessible jobs for an underemployed populace, additional tax revenue, and a reduction in community detriments such as crime, empty lots, and low property values. The North 24th Street corridor has economic potential, as it is less than one mile from downtown …

Emotional Bonds With Technology: The Impact Of Customer Readiness On Upgrade Intention, Brand Loyalty, And Affective Commitment Through Mediation Impact Of Customer Value, Atieh Poushneh, Arturo Z. Vasquez-Parraga

Marketing Faculty Publications

Drawing upon the Theory of Consumption Value, this empirical study developed a readiness-value model and examined the direct effect of customer readiness on customer value types and the mediation impact of perceived emotional and functional value toward products being used in the relationship between customer readiness and customers’ upgrade intention, customers’ loyalty intention toward the brands they are currently using and customers’ affective commitment toward their current service providers. Surveys obtained from 174 adult respondents were analyzed, and they show that customer readiness directly and significantly impacts all types of value: emotional, functional, social, monetary and epistemic. Perceived emotional value …

Understanding Volatility: An Analysis Of The Stock Market Return-Variance Correlation, Richard Traub May 2019

Understanding Volatility: An Analysis Of The Stock Market Return-Variance Correlation, Richard Traub

Honors Scholar Theses

This paper attempts to explain the negative correlation between stock market returns in the United States (measured by the risk premium of the S&P 500 Index) and the respective volatility of these returns. The academic research regarding two primary schools of thought on this issue, the volatility feedback effect and the leverage effect, is furthered as potential explanations for this phenomenon. A tertiary explanation relating to investor behavior is also explored as a viable cause. In order to empirically study this relationship, I examine the risk premium quintiles and the corresponding CBOE Volatility Index levels for the time-series dating from …

Schumpeter Revisited : Faster Better Cheaper As Grounds For Entrepreneurial Success And A Path To An Ipo., Charles Raymond Olsavsky May 2019

Schumpeter Revisited : Faster Better Cheaper As Grounds For Entrepreneurial Success And A Path To An Ipo., Charles Raymond Olsavsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current entrepreneurship research focuses on two types of entrepreneurial firms: (1) the firms that develop innovative novel products or services arising from technological innovation; and (2) the firms that develop innovative novel products or services arising from recognition of an opportunity in existing conditions, no type of change required. A third type of business founder has been largely ignored in the modern entrepreneurship research - - the founder who enters a competitive market with no novel product or service that he or she invented. I refer to this founder in a competitive market as a performance entrepreneur. This dissertation …

Thinging : Powerful Objects., Tammy M. Burke May 2019

Thinging : Powerful Objects., Tammy M. Burke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The works in "Thinging” are inspired by desire, the genuine and the false, systems of real and perceived values, the quest for immortality, the allure of things, our use of them to make ourselves, and imagining pasts and futures via objects. The following concepts are threaded through the work: cathexis, ritual as a value builder, collections, hoarding, display, object history, exchange, use, and sign values, and vibrant materiality. At the heart of my investigation is the quest to examine the origins of object power, and by what measures it can be evaluated: value from belief, market value, and something perhaps …

Innovate Within Product Lines Or Outside Of Them? An Ethnographic Study Of Corporate Innovation In A Corporate Venture Makerspace., Cole Joseph Crider May 2019

Innovate Within Product Lines Or Outside Of Them? An Ethnographic Study Of Corporate Innovation In A Corporate Venture Makerspace., Cole Joseph Crider

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organizational forms firms use for innovating include R&D departments, corporate venturing, and open innovation. This dissertation examines a new form for corporate innovation—the corporate venture makerspace. Makerspaces are “shared production facilities,” and scholars suggest they are environments in which to create; yet few firms have adopted them as a means to innovate. This dissertation is an ethnographic study in which I examine why a large corporation with active R&D centers and limited resources also has a corporate venture makerspace as a secondary innovation mechanism when both organizations serve the same overarching function: explorative learning activities intended to generate innovative …

Balancing Exploration, Exploitation, And Efficiency : A Framework Of Entrepreneurial Learning., Shaun Paul Digan May 2019

Balancing Exploration, Exploitation, And Efficiency : A Framework Of Entrepreneurial Learning., Shaun Paul Digan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Entrepreneurial learning (EL), defined as “learning in the entrepreneurial process through which individuals acquire new knowledge, either vicariously or from direct experience, which has the potential to change the range of entrepreneurial actions”, is a key construct in the pursuit and development of entrepreneurial opportunities. However, the field of entrepreneurship has yet to produce a theory of learning explaining under what conditions individuals engage in differing types of entrepreneurial learning. Further, the limited research within this line of inquiry is diverse and disconnected. In this research, I attempt to advance the literature on organizational and entrepreneurial learning through the examination …

Meaningful Consumption: A Eudaimonic Perspective On The Consumer Pursuit Of Happiness And Well-Being, Aditya Gupta May 2019

Meaningful Consumption: A Eudaimonic Perspective On The Consumer Pursuit Of Happiness And Well-Being, Aditya Gupta

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Prior research indicates that consumers often pursue happiness through the market and that their purchase choices can vary depending on how they define happiness. However, while prior research has tended to use a hedonic lens to frame happiness in terms of pleasure, the current investigation is one of the first to use a eudaimonic lens to frame happiness in terms of personal meaning or meaningfulness. The central goal of this dissertation, therefore, is to arrive at a stronger understanding of eudaimonic consumption. In this regard, findings from six experimental studies reveal that eudaimonic consumption differs from hedonic consumption on a …

Millennials' Acceptance Of Voice Activated Shopping, Katelyn Nicole Sorensen May 2019

Millennials' Acceptance Of Voice Activated Shopping, Katelyn Nicole Sorensen

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The rise of voice technologies has changed the way individuals complete tasks and interact with their devices. Retail companies are now offering voice features to shop for products, but there is a gap in literature about consumers’ acceptance of using voice technology to make purchases. Previous studies have compared the different brands of voice technologies, investigated privacy issues, or explained the acceptance of voice technology. Millennials’ acceptance and shopping through voice technologies have not been researched before. Kääriä (2017) calls for future studies to focus on voice technologies, since the technology is constantly improving, and new forms are entering the …

Google is the premier tech company. One of the largest, most successful companies on the planet, Google derives the overwhelming majority of its revenue from Google AdWords to the tune of $136 billion last year. The following is an analysis of Google’s strengths, competition, and place in the market and society. Although Google needs no help dominating the ads industry — and thus no suggestion has been provided — should the digital ads industry falter, Google faces an existential threat. To counter this, various strategies to diversify Google’s sources of income, all of which leverage Google’s existing assets and competencies …

A Strategic Analysis Of The Nebraska Alumni Association, Colton Siebert, Michael Eesley, Conrad Shiu, Melissa Newkirk, Joshua Demers, Jeb Vavak

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The Nebraska Alumni Association (NAA) is in a unique position regarding where it fits in the lives of the people it serves and the potential growth of their programs. Being separate from the University system, yet still driven by mission to help the university grow, has given the association several advantages as to being able to act in an agile manner. However, only 24,000 of the over 200,000 University of Nebraska-Lincoln alumni have paid to become a part of the Nebraska Alumni Association. This is shocking, and we believe that our recommendations can turn the tide through engagement of the …

Dividend Payments And Excess Cash: An Experimental Analysis, Z. Tingting Jia, Matthew J. Mcmahon May 2019

Dividend Payments And Excess Cash: An Experimental Analysis, Z. Tingting Jia, Matthew J. Mcmahon

Economics & Finance Faculty Publications

There is an observed positive correlation between the size of firms’ dividends and the amount of cash they keep on hand. We specify a new channel of precautionary cash holdings as related to dividend-smoothing, which predicts that increased dividends should cause firms to keep more cash on hand. In the reverse direction, theory’s predictions depend on the source of the increased cash on hand. General dividend smoothing theory predicts that temporary increases in cash due to natural market fluctuations should not affect dividends. If the increased cash is due to a permanent increase in profitability, both the marginal benefit and …

The Cosmos Of A Public Sector Township: Democracy As An Intellectual Culture, Patturaja Selvaraj May 2019

The Cosmos Of A Public Sector Township: Democracy As An Intellectual Culture, Patturaja Selvaraj

Management Faculty Publications

The public sector plays an important role in responding to the rights of citizens and evolving norms of social interest (Qu 2015). Qu argues that the nature of public enterprise is never final and there is a constant negotiation between the private and the public emergence of life and rights. One such space where the tension between the private and the public manifests itself is the public sector township or the residential colony in India. The sociality of hierarchy in public sector organizations manifest itself in the public sector township and may nurture everyday aspirations, angsts and divides. The officer …

Psychopathic Personality Traits In Students Entering Helping Professions, Sarah E. Gallup May 2019

Psychopathic Personality Traits In Students Entering Helping Professions, Sarah E. Gallup

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Psychopathy is often misrepresented as a sign of criminality and deviance. However, current literature suggests that psychopaths make up approximately one-fifth of the general population. Some people use these characterological traits to their benefit in positions of leadership. In this study, students from a Christian university in the Pacific Northwest were selected to participate in a survey, based upon their chosen major (Business, Psychology, and Religion). It was hypothesized that Business students would have the highest total levels of psychopathy and religion majors would show the lowest levels of psychopathy. Since religion often serves as a protective factor, it is …

Why Intercollegiate Athletic Departments Should Embrace Alcohol Sales, Garrett J. Clark May 2019

Why Intercollegiate Athletic Departments Should Embrace Alcohol Sales, Garrett J. Clark

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis is guided by the theory of marketing myopia, the idea that an organizations should focus on single aspects like consumer needs and experiences in order to be successful. The sale of alcohol is becoming more and more common throughout collegiate athletics yet many schools are still missing out on the benefits that can come from embracing the tailgating culture of sports. This will examine the current literature surrounding the sale of alcohol at collegiate events, tailgating culture and what this all looks like in the real world. By examining schools and programs who currently offer the sale of …

Review Of Quantitative Methods For Supply Chain Resilience Analysis, Seyedmohsen Hosseini, Dmitry Ivanov, Alexandre Dolgui

Faculty Publications

Supply chain resilience (SCR) manifests when the network is capable to withstand, adapt, and recover from disruptions to meet customer demand and ensure performance. This paper conceptualizes and comprehensively presents a systematic review of the recent literature on quantitative modeling the SCR while distinctively pertaining it to the original concept of resilience capacity. Decision-makers and researchers can benefit from our survey since it introduces a structured analysis and recommendations as to which quantitative methods can be used at different levels of capacity resilience. Finally, the gaps and limitations of existing SCR literature are identified and future research opportunities are suggested.

Smart Speaker Forensics, Steven Engelhardt May 2019

Smart Speaker Forensics, Steven Engelhardt

Business/Business Administration

Devices such as the Google Home and Amazon Echo are great sources of digital evidence and artifacts due to the fact that much of the data these devices generate are stored both locally and in the cloud. For this reason, law enforcement and forensic investigators are not forced to rely on companies such as Google and Amazon to retrieve useful information. In this paper, techniques used to retrieve this information are discussed. Although some of these techniques require an analyst to have an individual’s login credentials, other techniques that focus on the data stored in a user’s phone can be …

You Might Just Surprise Yourself: When Will Consumers Purchase A Surprise Product As A Self-Gift?, Kelly Morrow May 2019

You Might Just Surprise Yourself: When Will Consumers Purchase A Surprise Product As A Self-Gift?, Kelly Morrow

Business/Business Administration

Consumers are becoming increasingly self-oriented in their purchase and consumption behaviors. Self-gifts have proliferated on the market, especially self-gifts that contain an element of surprise, which can be seen with the rise in popularity of subscription boxes. Surprise has been found to enhance the function of self-gifts, but it can also result in post-purchase regret if the surprise did not meet consumer expectations. Typically, individuals consume self-gifts as forms of indulgences, rewards, and as mood-regulatory devices. Based on these findings, this paper examines the relationship between three mood conditions (positive, neutral, and negative) and consumers’ likeliness to purchase a surprise …

Cross Cultural Comparison Of Factors Driving Luxury Consumption, Claire Williams May 2019

Cross Cultural Comparison Of Factors Driving Luxury Consumption, Claire Williams

Apparel Merchandising and Product Development Undergraduate Honors Theses

The global luxury market continued to grow to $313-318 billion in 2018 and the market is estimated to reach about $442 billion in sales by 2025 (Arienti, Levato, Kamel, & Montgolfier, 2018). Despite the rapid growth of the luxury market, factors influencing consumers’ perceptions and purchase intentions toward luxury brands remain under investigated. Researchers found consumers rely on extrinsic attributes such as country of origin (CoO) when purchasing luxury products. The mixed results of CoO effect in prior studies yield a need for further research. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of CoO and the …
